Honorentheos Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Luke 12:3 - Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops I'm curious how prevalent a belief is or was that I was raised with while growing up LDS. I believe it stems from scriptures like that quoted above from Luke. While growing up, I was often taught that at some point during the final judgement we'd all have our lives shown to everyone. The impression it gave was that of a large cinematic projection of one's life where every lie you told, every sin committed would be revealed to everyone you ever knew but especially those you cared about. The thought of this had an effect on me as a young teen and there were occasions when I'd consider how I'd react to my grandmothers seeing something played out in technocolor which had a motivating influence. As I matured I heard this less, and on thinking about it I don't recall this idea really being brought up at all in the decade or so before I stopped participating in the Church. So my questions are: Is this some sort of local or non-traditional belief that may have been taught where I grew up but not broadly in the Church? And second, if others recall these teachings do they still have a place in LDS beliefs or have they disappeared? I have to be honest in feeling the rise of social media and the culture it seems to foster makes this seem like less of a terrible deterrent.
Duncan Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I heard that too and repentance is the rewind button. Honestly I was looking forward to seeing others peoples' lives, like how did the whole JFK thing go down, Hoffa, how ALF ever came to be on TV etc. I haven't heard it recently though 3

I heard this as well but not as much lately. I also remember hearing people say that repentance will erase all those scenes of sin from the record of your life and no one will see it. Of course someone might wonder, how come the record of your life has so many blank spaces in it? 2

SettingDogStar Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 I heard it all growing up and it kinda freaked me out as a teenager, especially as a kid that had some repenting to do. I recall even hearing that the Lord and I would get to watch my life played before my eyes. This made me very uncomfortable and I remember attempting to repent because I was afraid of those moments!! However I never figured out how to repent totally till my mission, which was amazing and I realized the Lord is not that harsh. If we follow the Doctrine of Christ I don't think the Lord would attempt to make us feel guilty or even afraid. If we repented and were forgiven in this life, then I believe the Lord would welcome us with open arms without ever bringing up our mistakes we made here. I suppose most would agree but just my thoughts!

There is a scripture or two that has wording on this but I think it is a stretch to say that it has to do with the mechanisms of judgment nor of the 'day of judgment' nor of how we are and will be ultimately treated by our Heavenly Father and the Savior. As strappinglad said, I think it's clear that a good interpretation is that we are now in the middle of that prophecy (I want to say in Isaiah but could be wrong, too lazy to look up right now) due to all social media--vines, lol--and also what about talk shows--Dr. Phil, Geraldo Rivera, whatever, I don't watch them lol; and what about reality TV? strappinglad Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Not sure how this zombie thread was resurrected ...but...while we are back on the topic, I note that in many NDEs the experiencer says that their life was reviewed, without judgment, and that they reviewed it from the perspective of the ones that were interacted with. They got to feel how others felt during an argument with them or whatever. It does suggest that all was recorded, not just words and actions, but the emotions of all concerned. Again , it was emphasized that no judgment was felt from the divine. This doesn't quite jibe with scripture except the idea that we will judge ourselves. 1

Maybe social media is designed to teach us God-like patience. How many cat videos do we have to watch until we the patience of God?
