Popular Post stemelbow Posted October 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted October 29, 2015 Have we repeated history with our talk of superiority and others "failings"? it used to be that the leaders of the Church condemned monogamy for causing ruin and destruction amongst nations and people. As the 20th Century rolled on it seemed like leaders were happy to condemn homosexuality as the cause of destruction among nations and people. It used to be that polygamy was the secret to celestial living. Now the secret is strict monogamy. Where are we headed? Anyone else eager to see how all this plays out? It seems funny we're so confident we know what to preach against and just how to condemn, when it often feels like we can't see past our own noses. 7
Popular Post JAHS Posted October 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted October 29, 2015 I guess my nose is shorter than yours. We are headed where ever God wants us to go. Polygamy was right at the time God commanded it. Now He commands monogomy. Not sure what your point is. 6
JLHPROF Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 "The secret" is whatever God says is the secret. The question for me is what things coming from an eternal God are also eternal unchanging in their nature and requirement?Expecting an eternal being to "get with the times" seems a little foolish to me. 2
Coreyb Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 all these fancy conventions we are hosting as of late are just the sorts of things that were held by those good protestants back east to condemn us for our polygamy around the turn of the last century. I cant help but smile at the irony
Kenngo1969 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I believe one must understand the purpose of marriage in order to understand the dichotomy between what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches about same-sex marriage, on the one hand, versus what it teaches about monogamy and plural marriage, on the other. Both monogamy and plural marriage fulfill that purpose, while same-sex marriage, by definition and without intervention of a third party, does not and cannot. 1

There is no question that polygynous marriage is different that homosexual monogamy. What I dont understand is the zealous activism.
Avatar4321 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 For Noah building an ark was the secret to celestial life. The fact that this isn't the secret to our celestial life doesn't mean it wasn't for Noah. 1
VideoGameJunkie Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 D&C 132 says the purpose of polygamy was for procreation only in raising up seed, so was Joseph Smith having children with all his 33 wives, including the 14 year old? If not, he wasn't practicing it how the Lord commanded it. That's where some people get confused. Being told it was for one reason, and then actually doing it the way God didn't say to do it. 1

I don't think the whole reason and purpose for practicing plural marriage was completely understood back then at the start. They were still learning about the concept of being "sealed". Maybe he did have some children by some of those wives; we just don't know about them. Perhaps if he had lived longer we would have seen more evidence of offspring. Many of those wives he had were obviously meant for the next life; especilly those who were already married to another man. 1
Calm Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 .D&C 132 says the purpose of polygamy was for procreation only in raising up seed, so was Joseph Smith having children with all his 33 wives, including the 14 year old? Being told it was for one reason, and then actually doing it the way God didn't say to do it.Well, they didn't get the purpose of sealing of families themselves completely right for more blessings until much later when they finally started sealing actual parents by proxy instead of sealing by adoption. Thus they achieved some of what sealing blessings were meant for, but it took time to get the blessings we have today and I have little doubt we aren't there yet
VideoGameJunkie Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 But is it fair to the men that were already married to those women that Joseph gets to claim their wives forever. It's like enjoy us now cuz after we die so long sucker we are with the prophet now.

It seems funny we're so confident we know what to preach against and just how to condemn, when it often feels like we can't see past our own noses. You must surely remember that in Jacob 2 the prophet Jacob declares it's God's will that strict monogamy be the general rule for his people, so there should be no surprise at all that the "post-Manifesto" LDS Church is now commanded to strictly adhere to the law of monogamy, just as the Nephites were commanded to do. Further, in the same chapter Jacob goes on to say that though strict monogamy is the Lord's general rule, there will be occasions when the Lord will command his prophets to preside over periods of time when plural marriage will be practiced in righteousness by divine decree. So no one should be surprised that in the early years of this Dispensation of the Fullness of Times plural marriage would practiced once again. These things that seem to cause you to wonder were all anticipated and plainly taught in the scriptures... 26 Wherefore, I the Lord God will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old. 27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none; 28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts. 29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes. 30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things. 31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands. VideoGameJunkie Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 That still doesn't explain why wives were stolen forever.

Perhaps Joseph decided that having kids was not the best choice for him personally since his life was always on the line and him leaving a bunch of kids without a father was a high possibility. Also if polygamy is just about having kids, would it be wrong for a man who has fertility issues to practice polygamy?
JLHPROF Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Nobody was "stolen". Don't insult these women by removing their ability to choose. Marriage is as it always will be - an issue of agency. If these women chose Joseph as their eternal companion that was their right. Nobody was stolen. 1

What I dont understand is the zealous activism. I would be shocked if there had not been a great deal of activism concerning such a huge change in society represented by same-sex marriage. In the course of human events, it's a big deal.

Yes, and this is true both from a secular and religious point of view.

So there are many reasons the Lord changes what he preaches from His earthly kingdom, so that with His help our hearts can be changed a fitted for the heavenly kingdom.
Ares Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 It appears this thread was started with the express purpose of mocking. It went downhill from there.
