Land Purchases

I read a comment by brother Smith in the elder Scott thread about land purchases in Missouri. I didn't want to derail but is the church buying a lot of land there?

I have heard that from various sources, but I can't comment on the true extent of it because I don't actually know.

 

However, the Church has a strong religious interest in a couple of pieces of land which were dedicated for the construction of temples back in the 19th century (Independence and Far West), and they own Adam-ondi-Ahman.  There are temples in St Louis and in Kansas City, and a visitor's center in Independence (with associated land holdings).  Since prophecy holds that this will be the center stake of Zion, and that the Great Temple is to be built in Independence, there may be some large acquisitions based on those assumptions.

A "lot" of land is relative. It's not a lot compared to Utah, but it is a lot when compared to Kansas or New Zealand. Like others have said, to my knowledge the church owns signigicant land at AOA, Far West and Independence, as well as Liberty (temple & residential development around the temple), Hawn Mill (recently purchased from Community of Christ) etc. I don't see these as massive purchases but non-mormon locals certainly view them with a little bit of trepidation. Many locals are fearful of a Mormon comeback and sometimes get quite defensive about it.

It's my understanding that the Joseph revealed there were to be 24 temples in the Center of the City of Zion, which center point is Independence.  That's my understanding anyway, anyone else know more?

If you haven't read the history of what took place in the late 1830's between the Mormons and the Missourians from the Missourian's point of view and records, it's an interesting read.  That is probably why some who live in Missouri are not excited about Mormons buying up land there.

Why are locals nervous?

Because the Mormon population for such a rural area is already higher than one would normally expect. Because the county courthouse has a large plaque out front describing how the county was created for the purpose of Mormon Settlement. Because the largest employer in the county is Mormon. Because people are generally fearful of things they don't understand and because many of the local churches still actively preach anti-mormonism. Combine those things together and you end up with some interesting Op-eds in the local papers and rumor mongering around town.

They really should not worry. I believe the general consensus is that the unbelievers will all be dead by some means before the LDS return in large numbers.

Take this for what it is worth:

While selling solar panels one man I spoke with, big-wiggish in the local construction trade, told me about how he had worked on a large housing project off the beaten path and it was his understanding that the houses were specifically to be for members of the LDS Church. He said it was in the middle of nowhere and they weren't allowed to take down much of the trees and foilage during the construction process, so they didn't just strip a plot of land and make it noticeable during construction..

Like I said, for what it's worth.

Is it front page news?  Does it lead on critic websites?  Are the locals warning of the imminent demist of their community because the awful Mormons are invading?

I believe that is pretty typical for temple projects just to add to the attractiveness and sense of appropriateness of the area after the building is done, I would assume it would be the same for any historical visitor centers.

This is not any LDS development. It is an ex-mo polygamist who is creating a camp/compound (whatever you want to call it) near AoA.

It would be nice to have a large conservative voting block to shift community policy and affect local zoning decisions. Large areas of Independence are blighted and crime ridden. I work with numerous developers in the area and the LDS Church or its subsidiaries own large tracts of land in Jackson and Clay counties. I encourage you all to regather and help clean this place up!

No - but I recieved some interesting phone calls in the wee hours of the morning about loved ones who were in jail and mistakenly got my number when he was Jackson County prosecutor - not to mention inadvertant emails from circuit judges when he became county executive. Politically we're on opposite sides of the isle.
