Mormonmaniac Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 I think if you removed "traditional" from 99% of your statements in this thread, your arguments would have merit. As is, you have yet to address how a non-traditional marriage has worked to the benifit of society. There is no such thing as a same sex marriage that is a benefit to society. Thats like saying cancer is a great benefit for life.
thesometimesaint Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 So, you think our living prophets are worthless? Any claim to any religion as a basis of government or governmental policy is the antithesis of of self governance.
thesometimesaint Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 There is no such thing as a same sex marriage that is a benefit to society. Thats like saying cancer is a great benefit for life. Considering the mess that OSM have made of marriage SSM wouldn't do much worse..
Damien the Leper Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 So, you think our living prophets are worthless?I'm saying "revelation" and "prophecy" appear to be mere speculation than a foretelling.
Senator Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 There is no such thing as a same sex marriage that is a benefit to society. Thats like saying cancer is a great benefit for life. I'm not talking about SSM. I'm talking about plural marriage.
Damien the Leper Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I will ask one more time politely- Please take your politics elsewhere. Thank you.No. Your partisan ignorance is an epidemic that needs to be neutralized. People like you are who Christ and the scriptures have warned us against.
Damien the Leper Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 There is no such thing as a same sex marriage that is a benefit to society. Thats like saying cancer is a great benefit for life.SSM and homosexuality aren't diseases. Your spiteful and disingenuous comparison fails absolutely.
Jeanne Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 The prophets do know what God wants. SSA is not entirely understood yet. We do know that we do have the choice to follow after what we are attracted to or not to follow after it. No one is forced into homosexuality just because they were born that way.Okay..then surely God knows. Why the process of understanding sexuality if God knows what he wants and what He means..The prophets still can't define much when speaking of SSA.
Mormonmaniac Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 Okay..then surely God knows. Why the process of understanding sexuality if God knows what he wants and what He means..The prophets still can't define much when speaking of SSA.I certainly cant speak for them but I do know that their stance is completely against homosexuality as a lifestyle. This "SSA" is a worldly term that isnt biblical and is a term identified only in our day. The church is using some PR because of the ambiguity of how it is defined.

Calm Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Do you see the change? Even you have now accepted that it is an inborn trait. Not learned..but inborn. Inappropriate or not, why would they be inborn to overcome to return to the Father who made them?Assuming it is all inborn and not learned, there are people who are totally incapable of experiencing romantic love for a variety of reasons, some even incapable of experiencing love or emotion. Or at least are so confused by emotions they are unable to have healthy relationships of any emotionally based kind (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexithymia for example)? Why would the Father allow them to be born that way? Why would God allow someone to experience a life where that is a burden they must carry as an adult (whether such limitations are born, learned or caused by brain damage)? Calm Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Considering the mess that OSM have made of marriage SSM wouldn't do much worse.Even if one assumes a 50% divorce rate, that still means 50% are staying married, a good portion of which are happily married. That gives significant room for doing a lot worse (not saying that it will, but just saying that even a 50% rate means there is a lot of success out there still). And that commonly claimed data is likely not that great. Found this when looking for a site that separated always married, divorced once and divorced multiple times and didn't just clump them all together (as a very simplified and therefore probably not spot on in the math example of how it could be confusing....if out of 10 people counted, only 1 gets married and divorced but he gets married and divorced 9 times, the divorce rate of one version of calculation is 50%...9 successful marriages, 9 unsuccessful marriages): http://www.today.com/health/divorce-rates-are-lower-so-are-marriage-rates-1D80332291 according to this success rate will be going up to 66%...but the problem is that those who are trying in the first place will be lower among the less educated, lower income. Higher education and income are more likely to get married and make it work. Edited April 20, 2015 by calmoriah
california boy Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 The same as any other inappropriate inborn trait we need to overcome. The list is long. There is no reason SSA should get a pass and other negative traits shouldn't.What other inborn trait is cured by taking out the core of the plan of salvation by forbidding to marry and have the blessings that come with temple marriage and families sealed both in this life and for eternity? Interesting way of dealing with an inborn trait. This cure seems to be diametrically opposed to the very core of the plan of salvation. 2
Senator Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Mormonmaniac, I'm still interested in your response to the notion of a non-traditional marriage practice being credited to the success of its society.
Mormonmaniac Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Mormonmaniac, I'm still interested in your response to the notion of a non-traditional marriage practice being credited to the success of its society. If we define "non-traditional marriage" as a same sex marriage then the notion that it provides success to its society is flat out a false notion.
Senator Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) If we define "non-traditional marriage" as a same sex marriage then the notion that it provides success to its society is flat out a false notion. Once again, I'm not talking about SSM. Wasn't it you that said this thread was not intented to be about SSM? Let's set it aside for a moment. Again, I'm still interested in your response to the notion of a non-traditional marriage practice being credited to the success of its society. Namely plural marriage. Care to address that? Let's set it aside for a moment. Again, I'm still interested in your response to the notion of a non-traditional marriage practice being credited to the success of its society. Namely plural marriage. Care to address that?Plural marriages can benefit society in certain circumstances. I am sure that many LDS in the intermountain west come from lineage where plural marriage was practiced by our ancestors. A lot of good leaders and hard workers came from parents who were polygamous.
Robert F. Smith Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 If we define "non-traditional marriage" as a same sex marriage then the notion that it provides success to its society is flat out a false notion. The same argument prevailed before the U. S. Supreme Court in Reynolds v United States in the matter of Mormon polygamy. Of course they got the sociology wrong, and ended up with a decision as fresh and righteous as the Dred Scott decision.

Senator Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Plural marriages can benefit society in certain circumstances. I am sure that many LDS in the intermountain west come from lineage where plural marriage was practiced by our ancestors. A lot of good leaders and hard workers came from parents who were polygamous. Correct. And because of that I think you are failing to recognize how the realization of such a success story is problematic to the "traditional only" mantra.
thesometimesaint Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Not quite sure what you are even saying there man. It's really pretty easy. Believe whatever you want, but act in accordance to law. IE; “It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”―Thomas Jefferson
