thesometimesaint Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Even if one assumes a 50% divorce rate, that still means 50% are staying married, a good portion of which are happily married. That gives significant room for doing a lot worse (not saying that it will, but just saying that even a 50% rate means there is a lot of success out there still). And that commonly claimed data is likely not that great. Found this when looking for a site that separated always married, divorced once and divorced multiple times and didn't just clump them all together (as a very simplified and therefore probably not spot on in the math example of how it could be confusing....if out of 10 people counted, only 1 gets married and divorced but he gets married and divorced 9 times, the divorce rate of one version of calculation is 50%...9 successful marriages, 9 unsuccessful marriages): http://www.today.com/health/divorce-rates-are-lower-so-are-marriage-rates-1D80332291 according to this success rate will be going up to 66%...but the problem is that those who are trying in the first place will be lower among the less educated, lower income. Higher education and income are more likely to get married and make it work. I'm not assuming a 50% divorce rate means anything other than 50% divorce rate. Happiness is another factor altogether.
Senator Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Why is it problematic? It demonstrates the viability of non-traditional forms of marriage as being beneficial to both the practitioners of that type marriage and society at large.

Mormonmaniac Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 I think it could be argued though that same-sex marriage is a sub group of traditional marriage. Ha, not even close.
rockpond Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I think it could be argued though that polygamy is a sub group of traditional marriage. And you would probably also argue that Joseph Smith & Brigham Young's practice of polygamy fit within the Proclamation on the Family.
Daniel2 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 (edited) To the point of the OP:I fully support so-called "traditional" marriage between opposite-sexed, heterosexual couoles. In fact, I also respect the right of homosexuals to enter into so-called "traditional" marriages with members of the opposite sex (even if I do personally believe such marriages are a bad idea and have much higher divorce rates).I support efforts to strengthen such marriages by focusing efforts on educating couples about how to navigate disagreements, improve communication, become better parents, budget finances, and teach and care for one another and their children.I also support all those same efforts to strengthen the marriages and families of same-sex, homosexual couples and their children, because my support for both are not in conflict with one another. I think it futile to attempt to strengthen the "marriage" or "relationship" aspect of a same sex couple. Why? Because same sex couples are not good for society as a whole nor individually over the long term.

Mormonmaniac Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Sorry, bud. That doesn't count as a CFR. Take it or leave it. I shouldnt have to show by reference that homosexual relationships are not a benefit to society on a LDS forum. Its because of our disease as a society I guess.

Is that appropriate for an LDS forum? It may also result in your thread getting shut down. 2
Daniel2 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 (edited) Even Christ has his nemesis who claims the same.Hmmm. I'm unfamiliar with any nemesis of Christ who claims that his former marriage to a woman and his subsequent marriage to a man demonstrate that same-sex marriage can be good for some people...Unless you're suggesting I'm the anti-Christ...?! california boy Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 I have NO respect for anyone who does not answer a CFR. They are in violation of the agreement they made when they signed up with this board. Breaking that agreement shows a complete lack of integrety. They do not deserve to be a participating member of this board and in my opinion they do not deserve any answer to their posts until they answer the CFR or withdraw their statement. 2

Societies which reject same sex unions suffer a lack of those Christlike attributes. See, I can do it too! 1

Your statement falls. How does it fall and yours stands? Do you have something to back up your declaration of the failing of my statement? Perhaps a study about the effect of same-sex marriages in societies? Feel free to never back up anything you say I guess, but you got to back yourself up if you are openly declaring false what someone else is saying. Or at least call a CFR on me to challenge me. 1
