Why Must Jesus Be Painted White?

So you believe God the Father had literal sex with Mary. That his genes were literally passed on to Jesus? Really?

He's probably going off what he's been told by various church leaders.

Exactly how does the Son of God indicate that God the Father had "literal sex" with Mary?  It was my understanding that Mary was told the Holy Spirit would come upon her and she would bear the Son of God.

Also, where does being the Son of God stop being the son of God?  Is he supposed to be the son of God in name only or just limited to a spiritual nature?  Mary was told she would have a son through the power of the Holy Spirit, but does that mean that Jesus is the Son of God in name only?

The doctrine of the Church, much to the chagrin of the lowest caliber of anti-Mormon stupidity that passes itself off as criticism, is that Jesus was born of a virgin.  Just because the Bible Answer Man or Ed Decker, or any of a host of idiots that choose to tell the LDS Church what it teaches and believes, does not make any of their allegations accurate.  Those who choose to repeat their errors, if not out right lies, are perplexing.  Why do it?  How many times do they need to be corrected before they actually begin to believe that The Church of Jesus Christ does not teach these errors and false doctrine.

Yes, I am a bit stressed today.  Friday is our Sabbath day in the Gulf region and this is the first day of work and I needed to take a break over lunch.  Moving right along.

Umm.....  "Actually I think the real problem is perhaps He was not 100% Middle-eastern"

LB is being polite here but I think what he's saying is that Jesus is 1/2 "middle eastern" and 1/2 .... well, that's why I'm asking.  1/2 what?

I'm just surprised people still take those more silly portions of the JoD seriously.  We've abandoned a lot of the silliness in those volumes already, must this idea that God literally impregnated Mary persist?

Several verses describe Jesus' skin as "burnished bronze," his hair like "white wool," and his eyes "darker than wine." The popular artistic representation of Jesus doesn't match the description well, and I do believe that's a cultural issue informed by racism, but I also believe that it's changing. When I was a kid, I remember all the portraits of Jesus portraying him as pale, blond, and blue-eyed. You see much more variation these days.

But for any kids reading this, don't worry-- Santa IS white! ;)

It is really important to remember how many colors writers of ancient languages had in their language.

Most ancient languages had only a few colors, 4-8 color choices was often considered a lot in ancient languages.

Hence the need for color by simile... Jesus face was like bronze, like sheeps wool, etc etc.

If an author has the choice only between white black and a couple of other colors how seriously to we need to treat claims of color. A white black distinction in that literary context may only be attempting to indicate a variance of a couple of shades of color - we just don't know.

Not the links I was looking for but they provide a but more info:

I believe that a God the Father is the physical father of Jesus. I also believe that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born. Maybe 19th century members saw a contradiction in this, but I don't. We now have artificial insemination, or even cloning. Or I suppose telekinesis could be a possibility as well.

Jesus was, and still is, only half Jewish.

And I'm sure you've seen lots of half Jews who had the same skin color as "white" people.

So Jesus is a god clone?

How does telekinesis relate?

As an alternate, non-contact form of artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.

Here is a description from a man who was a Stake President in southern California that mentions blue eyes:

"He was not dressed in the white robes which are customarily associated with Him but He was dressed similar to the other authorities of the Church who had visited us. His business suit was of a rich black material. He wore a white shirt with a blue necktie which was the color of his eyes. His hair was curling and the color of burnished, burnt copper and cut in the style commonly worn by General Authorities. He was about my height but of perfect proportions. His person and bearing inspired in me the ultimate degree of admiration and respect of which I was capable.

He paused momentarily before President Zimmerman and me. My eyes were riveted upon His countenance. I was so enraptured in His presence that I could scarcely breathe. My joy was indescribable. He looked at me for a long moment and smiled."

I believe that God the Father is the LITERAL Father of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Really. His genes were literally passed on to Jesus! He inherited his ability to overcome death from His Father. That is why we call Him the Son of God. (I also believe that discussion of the sex life of God is not only blasphemous but I think a board violation.)

From the Abraham H. Cannon journal, August 25, 1890:

Pres. Petersen told of an incident which he often heard Zebedee Coltrin relate. One day the Prophet Joseph Smith asked him [Zebedee Coltrin] and Sidney Rigdon to accompany him into the woods to pray. When they had reached a secluded spot Joseph laid down on his back and stretched out his arms. He told the brethren to lie one on each arm and then shut their eyes. After they had prayed he told them to open their eyes. They did so and they saw a brilliant light surrounding a pedestal which seemed to rest on the earth. They closed their eyes and again prayed. They then saw, on opening them, the Father seated upon a throne; they prayed again and on looking saw the Mother also; after praying and looking the fourth time they saw the Savior added to the group. He had auburn brown, rather long, wavy hair and appeared quite young.
