Ahab Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Supposedly one of the main reasons we came to this planet was so we could become like our Father in heaven, and supposedly Jesus Christ is also like him.So, what are the best reasons you can come up with for wanting to be like he is?OR, if you prefer, what reasons can you come up with for why you would NOT like to be like him?Just in case it helps to get the ball rolling I'll start with a few things I really like about him and how he is that inspire me to want to be like him.# His intelligence. He's as intelligent as our kind of being can become, bar none. I know others may think they can be more intelligent than he is, or that they would do things differently than he does, but that's because those people just don't know how intelligent he actually is. He's already taken all things into consideration before he makes a decision or a choice, so what he comes up with as the best solution is actually the best solution, bar none. It's just not possible to be more intelligent than he already is.# His love. His love is the best kind of love there is, and there isn't any way to love anyone more than he does. Somehow this is supposed to be a really good thing, this "love" thing, and one of the best things any of us can experience, but I'm still trying to learn a lot more about this. From what I know about it so far, though, I can agree that love a pretty good thing and I don't seem to be able to get enough of it. I want more and more of it, and I also want to be able to give more and more of it to others.# His power. Ooh, this one is pretty good, too. The power of God. I can't imagine anyone having more power than God does, but I also know there's a limit to how much even God can do. God can't make evil good, for example, or good evil, but he can make something good out of what once was evil, kinda like how he made me good or at least better than I was, and he's not even done with me yet. Just think how much better I can eventually be with the power of God to help me. Pretty cool, huh. Are you ready to see me become awesome! I know I am. I can hardly wait until I'm as good as God is.Well, that's a start. I hope others will chime in. I'd like to hear why others want to become like he is, or why they think that's not the best they can possibly be.
RobertAC Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Ahab, I think that is a pretty good list right there. I cannot think of anything else, but I particularly like the fact that you listed intelligence first. I believe that true knowledge allows one to better develop the love and the power. Oh and I will add another quality -- fearlessness.
swfarnsworth Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 My primary concern with the prospect of going to the Terrestrial Kingdom is that I fear that it will get old before the end of eternity. I'm not worried about this happening if I achieve exaltation.Your second two points sound pretty great, though I'm not sure I want to know everything. Sure, there are some future events that I would like to know about ahead of time, but knowing exactly how the rest of eternity would turn out would ruin all the surprises.

That's something else and that would help you to think of eveything there is for you to think about.... and perfect love is what gets rid of all fear. 1
RobertAC Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Ah, foreknowledge. That's something else and that would help you to think of eveything there is for you to think about.... and perfect love is what gets rid of all fear.Yup!!

I'm not worried about this happening if I achieve exaltation.Eternity will never end, silly, and just because something is old doesn't mean it can't still be fun.Your second two points sound pretty great, though I'm not sure I want to know everything. Sure, there are some future events that I would like to know about ahead of time, but knowing exactly how the rest of eternity would turn out would ruin all the surprises.I don't think we need to necessarily rule out surprises. Maybe it's just about knowing all of the probable possibilities and then from there we actually figure out how things will turn out based on what we know about all of the different things that play a part in the outcome, like how we'll know what our children will do based on what we will have observed about our children and the probable possibilities they will have to do things. We may still surprise him from time to time, even though he knows all about us based on what we have done and what our probable possibilities are, and maybe part of all that he knows is that he can still be surprised, sometimes. I think he'd want to have other children who he's still trying to figure out throughout the course of eternity, though, because at some point he'd probably have all of the older ones figured out, totally.
Spammer Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Yup, God's a swell guy. There are lots of things to like about him.
swfarnsworth Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Eternity will never end, silly, and just because something is old doesn't mean it can't still be fun.Exactly. That's why it's necessary that it not get old. By old, I meant boring, no longer interesting or entertaining, etc. Apologies to those of you who consider yourselves old.I don't think we need to necessarily rule out surprises. It would be a really good conversation starter, don't you think?
Ahab Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 (edited) Exactly. That's why it's necessary that it not get old. By old, I meant boring, no longer interesting or entertaining, etc. Apologies to those of you who consider yourselves old.I've heard it said that the more intelligent a person is the more of a need there is for play. All work and no fun makes (anyone) a dull (person). I'm sure God has a lot of fun things to do. I've heard he plays golf, but I think he has even more fun things to do than just that. The part about knowing all the possible possibilities (that's redundant) is probably (now it's repetitive) true.I was referring to probable possibilities. Not all things that are considered possible are probable, or even actually possible.I hope He already has me totally figured out, but if I have ever done anything to surprise God, I really want to know what it is so I can tell people about it. It would be a really good conversation starter, don't you think?Yeah, I'd kinda like to think that maybe someday he'll say to me: WoW!!! YOU really did that, and I was really surprised!!! Spammer Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Well, since he's so intelligent, he's got to be the wittiest and most charming person around. Since he's so loving, he'll never hold anything against you, even if you have him over for dinner and spill gravy on his robe. He'll likely smile and chuckle good-naturedly, with a twinkle in his eye, crook a finger, and instantly erase the stain using his powers. Best of all, since he knows everything, his jokes will be simultaneously profound beyond belief and hysterically funny. Surely, these qualities alone will help keep people from getting too bored in the eternities. 2

Bikeemikey Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 I really would like to have a full beard - glowing white would be kind of cool as well.
TAO Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 (edited) What inspires me most is simply that he wants me to become like him. It tells you how important it is to get done =). Edited October 26, 2012 by TAO 2
Spammer Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Remember Time Bandits? I'm with the bad guy in that one. When I create planets (like my patriarchal blessing said I would), forget The Stone Age. I'm starting off with spaceships and lasers.
rodheadlee Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 I love His Compassion and I want to be compassionate like Him. 1
Maidservant Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 (edited) I hope to learn to create life, to give birth to children, and to offer transformative energy (love, redemption) to those I create/give birth to so that they can have joy also.I want to become a person whose work and glory is the immortality and eternal life of my children and posterity. The only thing I don't want to be that my heavenly Father is--is male. Edited October 26, 2012 by Maidservant 2
Maidservant Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 is this a polytheism? It's the New Testament, kind sir. Matthew 5:48
teddyaware Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 1 John 1:5 says: "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."In light of the above verse from the New Testament, we may affirmatively conclude that God's motivations are perfectly good because there is absolutely no darkening influence from sin (and sinfulness) within him. Because he is a being of infinite and eternal light, with no internal influences at all of darkening evil, we can know the inspirations that motivate his actions are perfectly good and always done in the eternal best interests of his creations. Therefore, as followers of God, Christians should aspire to nothing less than to utterly banish any and all traces of darkness (evil) from their souls, and then be imbued with the same infinite and eternal fulness of divine light that Christ himself enjoys -- "for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." As joint heirs of all things that Christ himself has inherited from his Father, we Christians have been promised -- if we overcome by faith through the blood and power of the Lamb of God -- that we too will eventually triumph over all things and banish every last trace of darkness (wickedness) from our souls as well. We will not just be forgiven but utterly transformed into his complete image.Beings so filled with this perfect, infinite and eternal light (the Spirit of God) are then fully prepared to be entrusted with sacred responsibilities by God, and they will most assuredly accomplish great works of eternal significance in the Lord's onging creative works and processes. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." John 14:12Christians say it's ungodly to teach man can become like God and Christ (theosis) are unwittingly saying they are willing to cling on to some residual spiritual darkness (imperfection) in order to keep a certain distance between themselves and the perfection and happiness of God. Why would any professing Christian want to hold on to any degree of imperfection, especially since Christ himself commanded otherwise? "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." Matthew 5:48In these latter days, the Lord renewed his promise that we too may also be filled with the fulness of divine light and, like him, have no darkness within us at all: "That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day." D&C 50:24
Tacenda Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Yup, God's a swell guy. There are lots of things to like about him. This is grating to me, but I have a good idea that you're not serious, in fact this OP is about enough to make me ill. God is alot bigger and greater and our minds will not ever comprehend what he's able to do.
Ramil Torres Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 It's the New Testament, kind sir. Matthew 5:48Does Matthew 5:48 said that we are also a God just like heavenly father?
Spammer Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Yes, Tacenda, all kinds of absurdities emerge when we creatures anthropomorphize God, who is uncreated and infinite.
Storm Rider Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 When I read the first post I was struck by the oddity of the question. When I think of God my first thoughts are not that he is intelligent or powerful. These descriptions are like looking at the Pietà and then pointing to a single microscopic point and saying that infinitesimal point is really beautiful. It ignores the all encompassing beauty of the whole. Further, using these types of descriptors comes across as envy.I am not sure there are words that can adequate describe God or my feelings for him. Being like God is an invitation to follow him; to learn to love as he loves. Regardless of how much I desire to follow him I acknowledge that I cannot without his grace to bring me to him. My responsibility is to accept him as God, to humble myself before him, and to live by faith. I will fail and he will forgive me and urge me on. Take one more step and hold to the Iron Rod. 2
