Stake Conference

It's a tasty BBQ. Vegetarian Mormons don't have to come. They go to Broccoli Conference and grumble about being second class church members. We might feel bad about that for a moment between bites.

Is there any special level of inspiration or revelation?

(Is it at all like General Conference in some ways?)

Well, the Stake Presidency has jurisdiction over the area covered by that Stake, so said presidency may recieve revelation for the members of the stake. In that sense, it is kind of like a mini-General Conference, but without matching dresses and suits for the choir...

I've been to a Stake Conferences where President Hinckley and President Packer spoke. Both of their talks were extremely informal and enjoyable, with many entertaining stories (as well as teaching and doctrine, of course). So even when an Apostle or Prophet speaks, it can be very different than what you hear at General Conference.

I have come to the conclusion that because the church is spread out all over the world and is so diverse that any revelation of significance for the people of a certain area will come in stake conference. Each stake has it's own unique needs which cannot be addressed in a general conference. In fact a few conferences ago one of the GA's talked about how much care goes into choosing stake presidents because they need to be able to receive revelation and lead the people under them. I rather think of it as minor prophets teaching the people that are not in the jurisdiction of a major prophet.

There are generally three meetings that go with stake conference. Most stakes have a priesthood leadership on Saturday afternoon followed by an adult session in the evening. Sunday is the open conference for all members. Often a member of the temple presidency and the mission president will speak at one or more sessions. It is regional specific training.

Our stake choir wears matching clothing.

The stake presidency all give sermons as well as high councilmen, auxiliary leaders, recent converts, and regular members of the stake. There is usually an overall theme for the meeting.

We have also had video conferences with a panel of General Authorities and Auxiliary presidencies on the other end of the camera. They include several regions in the broadcasts and address us as if they were there in person at our meeting. The local presidency presides over the meeting and provides prayers, music, and local speakers for part of the time. In the olden days, we had morning and afternoon session of stake conference. The stake relief society provided box lunches for those who had to drive long distances. General authorities used to be regular guests at stake conferences.

What exactly is Stake Conference?

How is it similar, or different from General Conference (or the local weekly church meeting)?

Stake conference is held twice per year in every stake. Dates and assignments to preside are issued by the President of the Quorum of Twelve. Currently, in most places in North America, a two-year cycle sees two conferences presided over by the stake president, one presided over by a visiting authority, and one presided over by a general authority via video conference.

Ways stake conference is similar to general conference: SC spans two days, meetings are generally longer (about 2 hours each), it's hard to find parking

Ways stake conference is different: You hear from local leaders, there is a priesthood leadership training session, you can't stay home and watch it (unless you are a shut-in and the stake is fortunate enough to have internet broadcast equipment)

im, if you are unable to make it due to family obligations, you may want to ask your bishop or other leader if it is possible for you to get a video copy to watch later. In some stakes copies are made available for those unable to attend, usually through health reasons.

Huh??

edit to add: I think, IM, that you can see from the more serious answers that Stake Conf is quite similar to GC, only on a smaller Stake level... Talks are more relevant to the stake needs and guidance.

It is similar in that it is designed (as all meetings) to be a revelatory experieince for those who attend. This is partly why / how meetings are conducted by the Spirit (D&C 20:45; 46:2; Moroni 6:9).

It is different in that the agenda is driven more specifically by the stake leaders (as opposed to bishoprics and branch presidencies, or in teh case of General Conference, the general authorities) and their inspired understanding of what those in attendance need to be invited to consider receiving revelation about, though anyone can go to a meeting seeking inspired guidance for anything and likely receive it.

People have given you a good understanding of stake conference. But I will also give you another take that will compliment the others. People like stake conference because they can also see friends, relatives and acquaintances. It becomes one big family gathering with handshakes, hugs, kisses and small talk...but not during the conference when the speakers are speaking. :friends::hi:

Especially after a ward has just been split! :acute:
