New Set Of Scriptures

I just bought a new set of standard works. I'm a newer convert. I see so many people with the detailed process of marking their scriptures. What process do you prefer and why? I really love indepth study, love word studies, looking up origins etc.

Thanks a ton!

While he was on his mission, our fourth son developed an ingenious and useful (they're not always the same) program of scripture marking. If you're interested, I'll ask him to send you a copy of the booklet he wrote to explain it.

I'd actually be interested as well, I've kind of forsaken highlighting in favor or bracketing/underlining with a plain pencil. It's easier to do on the fly but does make it harder to find marked passages quickly.

This is one benefit of eScriptures. I can highlight in many different colors, make notes however long I want, hyperlink, and I can undo it all if I need to or if I make a mistake. There is even spell check! Try doing that with paper scriptures!

Good point, I now don't carry my scriptures anymore, I have all my notes and my scriptures on my iphone. That is what I use.

I just use one color, I read them so much I just know where it is and what topic. If I cannot remember the verse...I remember the chapter and on what side of the page it is on so I can find it quickly. I have had a love affair with scripture since I was 11...now I am almost 55. You can also get an "Ipad" and color highlight scriptures...the color code is already in the programming. My set has pages falling out...I got a new set but cannot find anything in them because they are not highlighted yet and the format for the Ipad does not have columns so it is hard to find tings...plus if you do not remember to touch the screen it logs off. I know hundreds of scriptures by heart; Product of growing up with a Preacher as a Father.

I am interested in learning about Mormonism. I have been reading the Book of Mormon, should I be reading anything else to understand the LDS faith?

Congratulations. You are in for an exciting journey. A few suggestions to make this journey more interesting:

I have the philosophy that extensive marking the scriptures tend to be a substitute for reading and understanding them.

I am very scant with markings -- I put a square making around a chapter number that has alot of good verses, rather than covering the page with markings. An isolated verse, I simply use a single check mark. I may underline a single word. I might write a short phrase at the top of a page ("Doctrine of Christ", baptism, how Satan works) which replaces a bunch of markings on the page.

On your first reading, use no markings at all. It is tempting to do it, but reward yourself with those few markings with the second or third reading.

Just a suggestion from someone who has spent his entire adult life studying the BOM. I have literally worn out several copies of the BOM -- they tend to last about ten or fifteen readings. If you have a bunch of markings, you tend to say "Wow, I have really have studied this" and tend to neglect reading it again carefully. The markings tend to be the objective, the mark of success rather than actual understanding. My objective is to remember where significant doctrines are found in the BOM.

I remember someone who had carefully marked up his BOM, different colors, etc, and was very upset when he misplaced it. "All that work is now lost". As for me, the work is in my mind. A check mark here and there are guide posts, "Here is something important". I thought, "How lucky you are. You can now start all over with a fresh BOM where you can start over again."

Finally, don't read a doctrinal commentary on the BOM.
