The "Confounding Of Languages" In The Bom

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

As I was reading the Book of Mormon today, I realized that the people of Jared may not have come from the time of the Tower of Babel described in the Bible as previously thought, but from the time of another "confounding of tongues." This, to me, could be a different event that took place at another time and elsewhere, since the Tower of Babel is never mentioned in the Book of Mormon at all. Any thoughts on this?

I could be wrong about this, of course, and I probably am, but it's an idea. Has any research been done regarding a "confounding of languages" that happened at the time and place of the people of Jared?

I think it is all but certain that "the tower" from which the Jaredites came, "at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people" and scattered them upon the face of the earth, is the same tower referred to in Genesis 11 ("the LORD...did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of the earth.")

  • Title page: "An abridgment taken from the Book of Ether also, which is a record of the people of Jared, who were scattered at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people, when they were building a tower to get to heaven."

  • Omni 1:22: "And his first parents came out from the tower, at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people."

  • Ether 1:33: "Which Jared came forth with his brother and their families, with some others and their families, from the great tower, at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people, and swore in his wrath that they should be scattered upon all the face of the earth."

I guess I missed those passages. I guess I was always under the assumption that the Tower of Babel existed long before 2600 B.C.....

altersteve,

Whether or not your theory holds any merit, it is a possibility that I never considered before. We just assume that it is the same tower because the terminology is the same. Your postulation is a reminder to keep our minds open and to try to put aside long held preconceptions.

There seems to be an inconsistency in the text. Brant Gardner places the Jaredites at around 1100 BC by basing it off of the genealogy of the text, while the tower of Babel happened before that. I am curious if anyone has taken a serious look at this.
