I don’t do zombie shows, no matter how tempting.  There is something viscerally disgusting and troubling to me about the whole idea even when well done and classy as some have been lately.  Hordes of mindless ravenous human looking beasts (especially if dropping body parts along the way)….yech, yech, yech.  I know some people get into them for that very reason, but that’s not entertainment for me.

Funnily I can handle vampire and mummy movies as long as it’s not portrayed as some sort of an epidemic.

The epidemic thing got me thinking about how I couldn't get into the Last of Us (naturalistic type zombie explanation), but I completely got into (and loved) The Strain (quasi-naturalistic type vampire explanation).  I'm not sure what the magic formula/difference is that draws me in.

Not a movie question, but this seems like it's probably the best-suited thread for this:

What season did you give up on The Walking Dead?  I swear, it has taken me about 3 years to make it through season 8 and most of season 9.  I keep trudging along, because I feel like if I give up now, the show somehow wins against me.

I feel like after the early part of season 7, it's become an act of self-flagellation watching it.

I think I made it to season 7?  I don't remember exactly but I quit after Judith showed up as like an 8 year old and was making friends with Negan in jail.  But getting even that far into it was a slog.  It stopped being entertaining after Negan killed Glen.  It wasn't even about the zombies anymore, just a show about people being horrible to each other.

I think I only made it to season 3 or 4 of Fear the Walking Dead.

I haven't seen the Last of Us but my favorite zombie show by far is World War Z.

I really like I Am Legend.  Last time I watched it though, the CGI really stood out like a sore thumb (it never has before, so I'm guessing CGI is just getting so good, that previously pretty-good now looks awful to my noggin).  Same reason I can't watch The Mummy Returns.

I lasted three seasons.  That is about all I can do for any series.

I read the book and the movie just screws up the story so badly that it’s hard for me to like it. Especially since they killed the dog.  No excuse for killing a dog.

But I definitely think it could’ve been so much better if they hadn’t CGI’d the antagonists. Actual actors in make up would’ve been so much better than the CGI monsters they created.

I gave up on it before it even came out. I despise zombie films/tv shows.

Has anyone seen The Fall Guy yet?  It is now showing at a local theater.  I'm interested because Ryan Gosling is in it. I like him, and I think he was raised LDS.

We enjoyed it. We were afraid we would have seen the whole plot in the trailers, but were glad to know that wasn't the case.  Hope you like it.

That's how I felt and still feel now. However, ironically, Warm Bodies is one of the FEW movies I will watch multiple times and bought because of that. There was NO WAY I would watch it when I first heard about it. Same with my husband. Then we saw the trailer watching a movie with the kids.  We secretly went to it without telling them and then ended up taking them. And then bought the movie. And have watched it several times more.

It is just so weird that the one movie I have watched more than probably any others would normally be one I would never watch. I don't know how that happened.

I think I got to season 4.

I've now made it into my treadmill show.  It's the only thing I'll allow myself to watch while doing my daily walk.  I've now managed to make it to Season 10, Episode 5, and I feel like they should give out a trophy if you finish it.

Great googely-moogely, it's painful.  But, if I give up now, it wins.

Does it ever get better again?

If you make it a goal to shut it off when you get to a certain distance it might help you to go harder. 😁

No.  Or at least not that I've seen.  There have been small glimmers of hope, of returning to relatable characters with in-depth personalities/morals/hopes/etc.  Then... *yoink* it's back to the lazy "the living are worse than the dead, and here's this episode's insurmountable catastrophe that requires stabbing a bunch of zombies in the face."

"Murder by Death" by Neil Simon (1976)

Starring:

Alec Guinness

Maggie Smith

Truman Capote

Peter Falk

Etc...

A comedic commentary on Neil Simon's feelings about mystery novels of the Agatha Christie type.

Fun watch.

Inside Out 2.

Liked it better than the first one.  My son and I both got pretty teary eyed at a few points.  They definitely did an excellent job with milking emotional responses in a way that didn't feel overtly manipulative (if that makes sense).  Thoroughly enjoyed, and definitely recommend.

Saw Horizon:  An American Saga.

It's a sort of anthology of different characters and their lives/experiences in the west at a homestead place called Horizon.  It's 3 hours long and the first installment (there are supposed to be four I think?) spends a lot of time establishing the different characters' lives so there isn't much intersecting between the different story lines yet.  You can tell though that eventually it's all going to come together around that town.

I didn't know that it was Rated R but you can tell after watching it.  There is a little nudity surrounding a woman bathing (the bathing was a part of the storyline but the nudity was unnecessary) but mostly it's the violence.

It has good actors and though people have complained online that it was hard to follow the storyline with so many different players I didn't find that to be the case personally.  It seemed fairly straightforward.  It's kind of a depressing show though and you really do wonder how anyone survived settling the west.  It seemed like a horrible, fraught existence.

I almost went to Horizon, mainly for the scenery since it was filmed in Utah. And was hoping the storyline would be just as good. But then I read that it's 3 hours long, I could have that wrong. So decided to go to the movie "Thelma", it's sort of based on true story. I don't ever dare say it's all true, so therefore the "sort of".

I picked going to "Thelma" because my husband had hip surgery a week ago Friday and it was only around 2 hours or less and had recently seen a film critic discuss it. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and really liked the actors that portray Thelma and her grandson.

The storyline has Thelma getting scammed with the old trick of having someone call and tell them their grandson is in trouble because of a car accident and ends up in jail. My mother-in-law had this happen but luckily she didn't believe it.

It's a Sundance film too. So they are usually a bit different than the regular movies IMO. I left the movie feeling good, that's kind of rare lately with movies, maybe it's my age, lol.

ETA: here's a video with them discussing that it happened to a real life character who happens to be the director's grandmother. :)

"Weird: The Al Yankovic Story"

An emotional juggernaut about a shooting star that rose fast and was taken way too soon.

I had no idea what kind of adventures Al lived in his short life! And how the footage of his death at the 1985 Music Awards by Madonna's henchmen hasn't leaked out is amazing. I'm just glad Al was able to reconcile with his father- who wrote about growing up Amish- before he was killed. Had he not we wouldn't have the golden oldie of "Amish Paradise". Think of the classics that would've been written had he been permitted to tarry here on earth. 😢

He’s actually still alive. I guess a lot of that movie is supposed to be taken as parody.
