Calm Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 (edited) From the article: Quote His supply ran out quickly, as many of his friends wanted to try it. There’s a huge difference when he goes without Zest, he said. “I’m tired, I feel lazy, I scroll Instagram, I don’t want to work out.” The one person in his life not interested: his caffeine-avoidant girlfriend. Plus: “She just graduated and doesn’t have a job, so she doesn’t have to get up.” This is what I worry about with caffeine. His natural state is feeling tired and lazy, etc. Instead of figuring out why that is so and correcting what is causing him to feel that way, he takes caffeine which masks the problem. Now for some people caffeine may be the cure, brain chemicals are naturally off kilter somehow. But for most it’s poor sleep hygiene causing the issues. And drinking coffee in this way is not making you healthier. And long term ignoring of that will lead to major health issues when older. Edited September 28, 2024 by Calm 1
Calm Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 (edited) lol…just came across a video on brain health. The podcast host has a wide variety of guests on it, so I often watch in FB for a few minutes to see what is the ‘latest’. According to this doctor the number one risk factor for Alzheimer’s is low brain flow. caffeine constricts blood flow by 30% according to this Caffeine restricts blood vessels in the brain, lowering brain flow which is why it’s great for migraines. So he’s advising drop the caffeine as well as nicotine. Also marijuana, alcohol, sedentary life style, and being overweight. Just looked up the doctor…not exactly conflict of interest free… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Amen Edited September 28, 2024 by Calm 1

I think everything in moderation is a good way to live. I follow the WOW because that is what the church teaches and it allows me access to the temple, but the only disallowed substances I feel are truly harmful are tobacco and non-medically approved drugs. Alcohol in moderation doesn’t bother me but I imagine there would be less alcoholics if we all followed the WOW and never touched it but that’s like pie in the sky thinking. Before I joined the church, I made my own wine & beer, but rarely drank alcohol to excess. Shortly before my baptism I poured gallons of "drink" down the sink. I drink coffee every day now, but have never gone back to drinking alcohol, though I occasionally feel like a glass of wine, or a beer, would be nice. But I'm one example of the idea that adherence to the WoW could be good for society: before I became disaffected with the church, I found out that a strong streak of alcoholism runs in my family. My committing to the WoW before baptism may well have saved me from from a lifetime of alcoholism. This is one of the things related to church membership that I will always be grateful for. 4

That is a wonderful way to look at it. I don’t have a long streak of alcoholism in my family, but when I was younger, I would often drink to excess on the weekends and make bad, even dangerous decisions. I quit drinking altogether while pregnant, and drank only a little when my children were young, but I have a feeling the heavier drinking would have made its way back into my repertoire when the children got older had I not joined the church. So I do see the WOW as a blessing for me personally. However, I do not begrudge those who can handle a drink or two. Edited September 29, 2024 by Peacefully 2

I have never read an article that claimed drinking soda and Coke Zero is good for you. On the other hand, I have read a lot that points out several health benefits for drinking coffee. I drink about 2-3 cans a day. I think I need to cut that down. My first job in high school was working at a restaurant. We occasionally had customers ask for some coke syrup for medical reasons. Not sure if that is still done. As I understand it, Coke syrup was believed to calm down stomach issues. Okay. I get why you’re contemplating the switch. I have to roll my eyes a bit at the church’s stance that drinking Coke Zero is okay, while coffee, with its demonstrable health benefits, is not. From what I understand, Coke syrup is still recommended/prescribed for stomach issues. 1

I found a number of articles that state caffeine helps protect against Alzheimer’s. One study stated it can reduce the risk up to 65%. Another one stated there is no evidence to suggest that caffeine increases your Alzheimer’s risk. And so on. There was also an article that stated that drinking diet soda daily makes one three times more likely to develop dementia. So, maybe California Boy is on to something, with thinking about switching from Coke Zero to coffee. 2

There are many with rls that have self medicated with alcohol, making a bad situation worse. I am pretty sure I would have gone that route when no one knew what was going on, just like my grandfather had an agonizing last few months of his life because they gave him anti anxiety drugs to calm his restlessness, which just jacked up his agony. So I am very grateful for the WoW Edited September 29, 2024 by Calm 2

Unfortunately, I'm not pulling up anything about those studies, either for or against it working. I am finding that caffeine can increase nausea and liquids decrease it, but not finding those results from studies, just posted somewhere. It would be interesting to find if a study was actually done and what was discovered. 1

This kind of stuff drives me crazy, lol, but science is not a clear cut everything is obvious road, so I do expect it. Here’s hoping the data gets clearer soon.

Yep…most people agree the sugar helps, like the carbs in crackers that pregnant women use (been there, done that). I have tried to find out if the phosphoric acid helps, but found only AI that said yes and the Mayo Clinic that said there was no solid evidence. Caffeine makes nausea worse…though I bet it might make you also feel better because of the headache that often accompanies nausea. Edited September 29, 2024 by Calm

So I am very grateful for the WoW rls = restless leg syndrome? I was diagnosed with RLS at one point, and treated with mogadon / nitrazepam. It made me into one of the living dead. I felt like my head was stuffed with wool, and I could barely stay awake, even standing up. It was worse than any hangover I'd ever had back before being baptized. It may work for some folks, but I was completely non-functional. 1

Most people with rls don’t like benzos in my experience, but that is mostly those with more severe cases. I was on klonipin for a bit but had to stop it because the same, though not as bad it sounds like. 1
