Java Creme Oreos?

Sooooo.... I noticed Java Creme Oreos, bought, and ate them.

I don't think I saw coffee as an ingredient, but if it is, is it against the WOW? I'm not drinking it as a hot liquid. Is that splitting hairs? What about chocolate covered coffee beans?

 Thoughts?

Pray about it and be honest with yourself.  I know people like black and white rules but we honestly destroy ourselves with these questions imo.

Depends on if you are going by the revealed WofW (which discouraged hot drinks for medicinal use), the modern reinterpretation of it, the late 20th century version (which made me think my friend's family were all sinners for having Coke in their house, which was just as sinful as alcohol or heroin), or whatever the cultural take on it is today.

As far as I know, JHJ's journal is the only contemporary source that notes that "hot drinks," as received in the revelation, specifically means coffee and tea.  That said, McKay seemed to think eating food with alcohol in it (i.e. rum cake) wasn't an issue; at least according to one anecdote.  So, I guess it all comes down to the person, and how adept you are at personally justifying it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some tobacco than needs drinking, alcohol that needs eating, and coffee that needs smoking.  Or something.

(As an aside, the coffee flavored M&Ms are absolutely divine, if you like the choco/java taste combo.)

This tracks with popular contemporary criticisms of humor theory of medicine published widely during this time, where people were told to drink "hot drinks" (primarily coffee, tea, and sometimes cocoa) to restore balance.

This understanding also explains why nothing is said about smoking or chewing tobacco, but instead only discourages ingestion (belly) and topical application (body, except for animals). Given that the Smith family believed that Alvin died of medical malpractice after being prescribed calomel for purging (another humor theory practice), it would make sense that Joseph would caution against tobacco ingestion, as that was also a common prescription to cause purging.

I may or may not have just added a certain flavor of Oreo to my online grocery cart. 🤷‍♀️

For anyone curious, I looked over the ingredients on these (and the Oreos, online), and neither uses instant coffee, or coffee beans.  So, it's either an artificial coffee flavoring, or it's a coffee flavoring extract. 

So, if'n you're a "letter of the law" type, you should be able to imbibe with your temple recommend intact.

Grocery store did not have the Oreos.  Now I'm on a search.  Can't order online for delivery, because it's gonna be almost 120 degrees the next few days.  They'd arrive deep fried.

This made me remember when my mother-in-law had me go get my eyes read to see what was wrong with my body. It's called Iridology. My MIL was a naturalist, and she loved essential oils, and herbs of all kinds and she also would go to this place because the woman that did this also sold oils, herb supplements etc. 

So at the end of my visit, I left spending over $250 for oils and herb supplements, haha. Which is fine I'm very open minded with using alternatives to having to take prescriptions pills.

One oil this lady had me buy was actually coffee in the drops! I was kind of taken aback because my MIL was very much a devoted LDS and would go weekly to the temple, and she seemed to be okay with it.

So I'm thinking it's okay if you have something like coffee in a cookie.

We did an Oreo tasting activity for a team event at work a while back, and I thought the Java Chip ones were disgusting (though the Sour Patch Kids flavor was even worse).

I actually like the smell of roasted coffee beans well enough, but pretty much everything I've ever had with coffee flavoring has been nasty. Possible exception: had a good tiramissu once, but I assume they left out the espresso, because every other version has been a one bite and done experience for me.

I say don't get too Pharisiacle about things and do your best to follow the Spirit. As I tell my kids, the Holy Ghost trumps everything. 

P.S. The result of our tasting bracket was that original Oreos are, in fact, milk's favorite cookie - though the various thins (i.e., mint, Lemmon, and dark) all did really well. 😄

I just don’t like Oreos and most other part or pure chocolate store bought cookies; cream-filled tastes like sweetened crisco-filled to me…

The worst is milk dipped Oreos.  For some reason I love cocoa, especially with a touch of vanilla, and hot golden milk is delish!, but chocolate milk or any flavored cold milk is gross.  Chocolate ice cream no way…

Hmmm….maybe I should go make some coconut oatmeal and almond cookies while sipping on golden milk…might be too warm for the last bit though.  Or maybe mango frozen yogurt…
