ISO: Resources for Service Missions for Young Missionaries

Recommended Posts

1. Is there an online list of young missionary service missions?

Friend of mine had a son who served a service mission in the Church vault somewhere in the mountains - the mountains of Ephraim if you will. :)

2. If young missionary applicants want to serve full proselytizing but they would do better or be more appropriate serving in service missions; what do? Like parents, bishops, etc. suggest service missions or note on the application what they think??? I have brothers who went full pros but came home early due to health reasons; not sure the service mission option was even mentioned when they were applying. I'm not going to take the same approach and hope for a different outcome with my kids.

3. Do service missionaries have to live with parents or with relatives?

4. Jerusalem Center service missions (currently or in the future)?????

5 The missionaries who serve in Germany but fly to Turkey once per quarter - epic! Any current or potential future service missions in that area? Same question for the Persian and Arabic wards, branches, and groups.

Service missions are now a part of regular missions under a regular mission president. That doesn't mean that they only serve in that area though.  For example the young man in my ward who lives in Mesa is part of the Mesa mission. However, there are 4 missions in the Phoenix area and he can travel in any of them for service. They do try to keep the service closer to home to save on gas, but at the charity organization I am with we do have missionaries that easily can be in all 4 missions the same day.

I'm not sure, but the elder in my ward was initially called proselyting and in the last couple of months came home and switched to service. I think the big thing to keep in mind is just to be aware that the option exists and bring it up if it seems appropriate to the situation.

Part of my nephew's mission was living on his own (with roommates) to see if he was capable of doing that. That was some time ago though so I don't know if that option is still out there.

One thing to keep in mind is that the rules of service missions are constantly changing. Where they cover, who they serve under, what they are allowed to do etc. I've seen this with our service missionaries at the charity and I'm sure there are a lot of changes I don't know about.  Then there are the things that apply to each missionary individually.

I HIGHLY doubt it....at least for younger missionaries.  Very few missionaries (I know of 1 total) are called to service missions who don't need extra physical or mental help. Even if there weren't a war going on there are special considerations in Israel for those officially from the church that service missionaries with physical or mental needs will be unable to work with.

While there are services the church needs that they use service missionaries for, now they are assigned to the regular missions and mission presidents.  There is a service mission coordinator that works to find community needs that those who are on service missions can do.   In the SLC missions, there are service missionaries helping with data entry, family history and other such things.
