Well the evidence shows that even back in Brigham and Lorenzo’s era, men who are forty years senior to teenage girls ( 14-15 in their cases) in a marriage was not a common case. In fact it was unusual. It isn’t presentism to point that out esp since marriage ages and age spread between men and women are little different than they are today when compared to Lorenzo and Brigham.

I was talking about the presentism.

I know and it doesn’t apply when the standard of society in regard to the topic at hand is pretty much the same. It wasn’t normal behavior back in the 1860s-1880s for men over fifty years old to marry 14 year olds. The only people who think it isn’t a thing are Mormons trying to defend it and play it off as no big deal.

But it applies when its bias affects the assessment (and accompanying rhetoric/polemics concerning) of a piece of evidence adheres to present-day attitudes, values and concepts. The authors of the piece you linked don't present their conclusions as "a thing" or take a moral stand on them.

I could, but I’m not having the discussion so it would make a lot of sense.  But if you need me to start one for you I can do that, no problem.

No, you should, unless you're on "limited" like me. Probably for doing what you're doing on this thread.

I agree..

the article shows the average age spread between hubby and wife to be approx <5yrs at this time period. That was then. Now the spread is a bit less. It essentially hasn’t really changed. What also hasn’t changed is our current society regards marrying children to be a bad thing. Same back then or everyone would be doing it and they were not. In Utah the leases could do anything they wanted because they ran the state with a theocratic government. Who in their right mind would openly criticize them??? Same as today. Members of the church are not allowed to openly criticize church leaders even if said criticism is true.

You know what? You are me, back in 2012 and on, when I first came to this site. I'd love it you start a topic on these things, rather than you get kicked off this thread or put on "limited". I can't start topics, but you probably can, I'd do it quick before mods read this.

He is not on limited if he can get rep points, he should start his own thread as it is very off topic and off tone for this one

I mod has reached out to me for any reason so I assume I am fine. Unless the forum isn’t monitored.

A mod only acts if something is reported generally speaking, so you shouldn’t assume because nothing has been done, that you are not breaking a board rule.  And when a mod acts, there may be no warning and you can be banned from a thread or the board.  Better to self correct.  It also appears that there are times mods may take a day or two to see a report, thus best not to assume it is okay just because there is no immediate response if someone asks you to stop doing something and no mod responses because 1) no one may have reported you yet and 2) mods may be busy with life

Lots of people don’t report others.  Not me.  I was once a mod on another board and I know how helpful posters who report issues were for me, so I do tend to report quite a bit, including if someone has made a request to abide by a board rule, written or unwritten and another refuses to comply.

One of the rules here is to stay on topic out if of respect to the OP.  We often get off track- but someone has requested you start another thread, so it would be gracious of you, a supposed newcomer, to do so. Or don’t.  I find this to be a good place so I try to be considerate to maintain good relationships.  Your choice.

It's usually called "threadjacking" and since it derails a thread, sometimes the mods step in.  Personally, I think that a little derailing here and there is inevitable, and sometimes thread topics evolve as the conversation progresses and no one cares.  In those cases, unless the OP is upset about it, it's usually fine.

But when it's a whole different topic that is being discussed between a couple of posters, while the original topic is still being discussed by everyone else, that's usually a good time to just take the discussion to its own thread.

You're derailing the topic perhaps?

Hmmm seems like it isn’t unwanted. I keep getting responses to my one comment I made . Maybe I should baptize this thread and wash away my posts.

Now you're just being rude, believe me, be nice cuz this board is great to discuss, they don't shy away from controversial subjects. It sure helped me with being able to air my questions with faithful LDS. I'm still LDS, just had a major faith crisis over this very subject.

I agree the board is pretty good about this stuff. No one was getting upset till just now and this is day two so I figured all is cool-I guess not but seems no one is complaining till just now.

Tone is everything. :) Or I should say tact is.

Agreed. And sometimes it helps convey an idea effectively despite who may not like it. Not unlike when pro lgbtq members get upset at oaks or some other person who delivers a talk emphasizing a concept about marriage. While the tone isn’t perhaps the best way to put it. It is the truth or it is just matter of fact. In many of these church discussions the tone is what gets people all riled up even though whatever was said is true.

Bingo!

I would say that injecting a negative attitude or tone in representing a point of fact obscures other salient facts and considerations, typically misreprenting the more complete and accurate picture. On the other hand, an open attitude and positive tone invites exploration and inclusion of other facts and considerations to form of a more sound conclusion for more people.
