Don't know about Utah  but in LA since covid about half the men have beards including the bishop.

In my culture of origin, not having a beard was a quasi-sin! Long hair? Now that was sinful! 😃

In New Mexico there were bubonic plague outbreaks in the hippie communes around Taos. Diseases are rampant in current homeless groups all over the country. 

At first the resistance to long hair and beards was a reaction to them as visible symbols of peaceful and/or violent protest and revolution. I was a sophomore at BYU the year the hair bans were instituted. The year before, my roommate and I both had beards. He had a full facial beard all year and I had a goatee for a while. FWIW, I don’t see the need for the ban now, but maybe there is a bigger picture. Lots of members have long hair and beards now. I haven’t heard any negative comments about my or my sons’ frequently recurring shrubs.

I know. In the stake I was in, if you attended ward council, you had to adhere to "missionary grooming standards".  I had had my mustach at least- with beards coming and going- since I was 16, when the Beatles all went for mustaches.

At 35 I got called as WML the there it went.

Not a happy camper.

1950 standards in the 1980's? Military standards while protesting wars and rumours of wars?

My first counselor just grew a beard.  First time in my life a member of the bishopric has grown a beard.  When I told him that he looked embarrassed as if he got caught doing something really wrong.  I assured him that it was a compliment.

I think many of us are still in our pajamas after Covid.

I’m not a bishop.  I probably worded that poorly.  I should have said “the first counselor in my ward”. 

I’ve worn a shorter well-groomed beard for over a decade now, but I don’t think I could pull of my ancestor’s masterpiece.
