Popular Post 3DOP Posted December 31, 2022 Popular Post Posted December 31, 2022 John Paul II was the last pope to have died in 2005. I believe as priest, bishop, cardinal, pope, and pope emeritus, Josef Ratzinger has been often misunderstood by liberal and traditional Catholics alike. Don't believe uncritically what you might hear from the mainstream media. Not because they are necessarily malicious. It is because it would be impossible for outsiders to appreciate the forces at work that shaped the former pope's life, ministry, and pontificate. I do not say he was flawless. I am deeply touched by his passing, and will always have a strong filial affection, for our now late pope. May he rest in peace. 8
Calm Posted December 31, 2022 Posted December 31, 2022 I did not see this before I posted in Social. To be open, I am never sure what to say when death comes to those who are ill. I hope those who sorrow for the loss of his presence find peace and others may be certain as they need to be that he is joyful in his coming home.
Saint Bonaventure Posted December 31, 2022 Posted December 31, 2022 Quote “If in this late hour of my life I look back at the decades I have gone through, first I see how many reasons I have to give thanks. First and foremost I thank God himself, the giver of every good gift, who gave me life and guided me through various moments of confusion; always picking me up whenever I began to slip and always giving me again the light of his face,” he wrote. “In retrospect I see and understand that even the dark and tiring stretches of this journey were for my salvation and that it was in them that he guided me well.” Benedict’s XVI’s spiritual testament underlines ‘the reasonableness of faith’ | Catholic News Agency 4
Chum Posted January 1, 2023 Posted January 1, 2023 Son #3 just educated me on the Papal Death Hammer. It's sad that a Mormon boy had to bring his Catholic-born dad into up to Papal speed. 1

Damien the Leper Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 Pope Benedict XVI was an amazing systematician. His text on Holy Week is my favorite from him.

Although I am not among the bereaved, that sounds good to me.

Calm Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 (edited) It sounds like the last four years had been quite difficult for Pope Benedict. Death itself may not be a cause for pity for the one who is in heaven, but there is usually at that age plenty of reason to pity the soul which was preparing for that moment in less than pleasant ways. https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/28/europe/pope-benedict-sick-pope-francis-intl/index.html Edited January 7, 2023 by Calm

Having not been Catholic for very long, I enjoy yours, Miserere's and Bonaventure's responses to some of the thread topics. 1

Stargazer Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 This: "If he showed no response, the camerlengo announced “the pope is dead” and took possession of his ceremonial ring, which was often then smashed with the same hammer along with official seals" actually put me to mind of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. One of the last acts before her coffin was lowered into the crypt was the breaking of the wand of office of the Lord Chamberlain, which was then laid on the coffin.
