I did not see this before I posted in Social.  To be open, I am never sure what to say when death comes to those who are ill.  I hope those who sorrow for the loss of his presence find peace and others may be certain as they need to be that he is joyful in his coming home.

“If in this late hour of my life I look back at the decades I have gone through, first I see how many reasons I have to give thanks. First and foremost I thank God himself, the giver of every good gift, who gave me life and guided me through various moments of confusion; always picking me up whenever I began to slip and always giving me again the light of his face,” he wrote.

“In retrospect I see and understand that even the dark and tiring stretches of this journey were for my salvation and that it was in them that he guided me well.”

Although I am not among the bereaved, that sounds good to me. :unknw:

Why a poor soul?

I think our friend meant well. None of us want we deserve. Great saints are poor souls. Thank God for all of His mercies. Pope Benedict would have probably agreed with Dario in his characterization.

Damien...I hope you are well...and very well. Among a few here, you are a sign of hope and the other virtues...but especially hope...to me. God love and bless you. Thank you for your encouragement. We are not saved alone. Only together, friend of my soul.

It sounds like the last four years had been quite difficult for Pope Benedict.  Death itself may not be a cause for pity for the one who is in heaven, but there is usually at that age plenty of reason to pity the soul which was preparing for that moment in less than pleasant ways.

I am doing well. I hope and pray that you are as well. I don't see myself as a sign of hope but I thank you for the compliment. Having not been Catholic for very long, I enjoy yours, Miserere's and Bonaventure's responses to some of the thread topics.

This: "If he showed no response, the camerlengo announced “the pope is dead” and took possession of his ceremonial ring, which was often then smashed with the same hammer along with official seals" actually put me to mind of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. One of the last acts before her coffin was lowered into the crypt was the breaking of the wand of office of the Lord Chamberlain, which was then laid on the coffin.
