Bill “Papa” Lee Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Due to an ever decreasing number of items on grocery store shelves, I have been asking my wife to stock up on a number of items. In addition, due to gasoline price increases, we have cut trips to the locations where we shop. As we live out in the country, we cannot afford to many trips, as gas prices are out of control. We are now limiting excursions to Church, and one shopping trip to once a week, two at the most. Also, due to so many increases, in so many things, especially meat, and bacon most of all, we have discussed other sources of protein. One item that we both love, and can serve as a protein substitute (peanut better), we can no longer locate. At lease the brand I (we) like the most, “Jiff”. We have been stocking up on products that only require, “salt and water” to prepare. Other items such as oatmeal, grits, potatoes, or potato flakes, etc. We are also buying, as often as possible, cases of can goods, including large cans of “beef stew”, along with dried goods, such as Pinto beans, black eye peas, even powdered milk. I created this thread in order to get some advice concerning other items that posters can suggest. Any advice, would be very welcome. So please, help me out.
Tacenda Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 I luckily bought a case of peanut butter, a year or so ago, hope they aren't expired. We don't eat it much though. Hope you find some! I use 2 liter bottles to store water, my diet dr. pepper ones. They say these work well. Just bought a wheat grinder and need to start using my wheat that my husband and I bought years ago. But will use it with white flour as well, because we're not use to wheat only. I have tons of cans of powdered milk and had thought it would be horrible to use on cereal. I do use it when making french toast and can't tell the difference. But then decided to actually try drinking it and it didn't taste bad at all, thankful I didn't give the cans away, like I wanted to. But they're available if someone needs them in my family. We inherited a bunch of food storage when my mother in law went to a senior living apartment, so I'm very grateful. Never thought I'd see this day come, but shouldn't have been so sure. Thought all my wheat was a waste, but now, I realize I may need to use it. The church usually has someone in charge of putting together information about food storage if you have questions that don't get answered here.
rpn Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Wasn't Jif the PBJ that was recalled for steel shavings a little bit ago? And if I recall they had to shut down a plant so it may be a few months. PB&J lasts a longtime unopened (was longer before plastic).

In addition, my wife (at my request) bought us a bread machine, and we have cases of bread mix, to make wheat, sourdough, and white bread, should we ever need to do so. This along with everything else we has stored, we could get through a year or more, no matter how bad things become. All of this, and listening to the Spirit (and the Prophets) has blessed our family of 19 now, as a whole, and my wife and I, (even longer) as well. Also, because Ukraine 🇺🇦 which provides 40% of the wheat for the entire world, and Russia which provides 60-70% of all fertilizer for the world, or so I am told. Within the next six months, or shortly thereafter, will cause a worldwide famine. Because of this famine, it will cause war throughout the planet, war that will create even more famine. We should all spend a lot of our time, on our knees in mighty prayer. Praying that our loving God, will show us mercy, no matter which Nation, and no matter which Faith. My guess, is that the Lord Jesus Christ will visit his judgment upon the earth, and speed his second coming, sooner rather than later. Our most important prayer is to be ready for that day of judgement. Having said all of this, I ask that as many posters as possible, give me as much advice as possible, of what to purchase, and store for our coming difficulties, yet to come.

I just pray the issue is resolved soon. My wife has purchased “Skippy”, but I am praying for the rapid return of Jif soon, very soon. I LOVE Jif!
The Nehor Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Yeah, there are going to be global food shortages. Russia and Ukraine are 1st and 2nd biggest grain exporters in the world. The gasoline price increases are driven partially by foreign supply shortages but primarily by domestic oil producers preferring to rake in the profits from higher prices instead of increasing production. To a degree this is understandable. Increasing production could lead to a bust if the situation changes and prices fall. The idea that we cannot increase domestic production is absurd. Oil extraction companies own a huge number of sites that are not yet being exploited. The US is unlikely to face serious hunger. Same for Europe. The worst of it will be food costs potentially increasing. Egypt and other parts of Africa will feel the squeeze. Afghanistan is already seeing starvation. Some of Ukraine’s farmers are planting and harvesting but until the Black Sea is safe it is unlikely they can ship much of their product overseas. Some can be shipped out overland but that is more expensive. 1
Rain Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 I order grocery pickup for newly arriving refugees. Peanut butter is a good source of protein for those that are Muslim in a store where I can't order halal meat. I've found it, rice, and beans all need to be substituted often because the item I chose it out of stock. They still have other brands or sizes for them though luckily usually. 1
