Posters leaving the board?  I doubt it. They added to the conversation, gave us something to discuss; plus the scholars were moving on to other venues before they came out. The same thing happened before on ZLMB (the board many of us participated on before this one) way before the essays. Whether the scholars got bored with repetition, found out they really couldn’t spare the time, found some other venue they preferred (I knew of several e-lists that were invite only iirc), or got tired of dealing with less substantive criticism that would be posted along side the interesting discussion/debates…hard to tell.

Once this board switched ownership and wasn’t associated with FAIR anymore, we lost several FAIR posters.

 I know non academic Saints announced they were leaving ZLMB because the attacks were tiresome (we didn’t offer increased protection for members, so there was more harassment imo), but I think once most of the Evangelicals and Fundamentalists left (only Rob Bowman and David Waltz continued to post for years later, though inconsistently that I recall…there were other Protestants and Catholics…some great, some not so much, but they were less academically focused), there wasn’t as much to interest the scholars and the EV scholars had almost all left even before I joined ZLMB about 6-9 months after it started. They had lost some of the oldest threads to automatic deletion by the time I started paying close attention (they deleted after 20 pages of threads, so we started changing full forums to read only and opening new ones for posting), but there were enough left oof the earliest threads to be really impressive. 
 

3DOP was at ZLMB from the beginning as well as this board iirc. He would likely be able to give the best long term comparison.

I meant that maybe since then we have it coming from the church so no longer is the need to debate about things that are controversial. Remembering when I first s h owed up on the board there were some debates about a few things that the essays cleared up, such as the head in the hat thing.

I remember some pretty good discussions on an AOL board around a century ago- was that ZLMB?

No, ZLMB was a message board like this one. It was a result of the Utah Lighthouse Ministry kicking posters off their board for supporting the Church…Zion’s Lighthouse Message Board. The service (EZboards) that offered it is no longer online so I can’t link to it.  The AOL board was the origin of FAIR. ZLMB was not connected to FAIR, though many posted there as well.  I don’t believe you ever posted on ZLMB.  I was one of the mods there.  I never posted on AOL as it wasn’t available in Canada, at least not in Calgary.

FAIR started in 1999 iirc, Juliann would know better because she was there.  I joined both FAIR and ZLMB in 2002 iirc.  The FAIR message board had a slow start and then picked up as frustrated ZLMBers moved over. I signed up in 2004, think it got going strong not long after that. ZLMB had a moderating policy of trying to be balanced to all; it didn’t work because not everyone started off equal.  Sensitive issues were known for members just by being a member and one could not point out similar weaknesses or other issues in those who did not share personal beliefs.  Also moderation was supposed to be by a member/nonmember committee, which was fun as all had great senses of humor, but doesn’t really work for moderation.  Mods need to be able to act immediately and not have to go through an appeal process in order to have a real impact on posters’ behaviour, in my educated and experienced opinion.  Our way, that prolonged the process including opening it up to the public so it could be debated, just encouraged more contention in the long run, imo….and made moderating a full time job for at least me.
