SuzyG Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 Hi Everybody (that reads this), I found this site because I googled "Mormon Deadheads" and an old thread came up from here. I was able to read the thread, which was very cool, but it was closed for comments. I have long felt a bit lonely being the only Mormon Deadhead I know. I live in Los Angeles, have TONS of Deadhead friends, go to lots of Dead & Co, Melvin Seals, and other shows, and see (and even sing with) local Dead cover bands. But I am the only Mormon Deadhead I know! And I am totally active and very devout. I go to the Temple. Is there anyone else out there like me? My first show was in 1987 in Ventura. I was hooked. I was into drugs and alcohol at that time, but by 1992, I was done with all that and realized I really love and believe in the Church of Jesus Christ. I served a mission in 1994-94. I still love the music and it helps me clean the house, enjoy life, etc! I welcome any comments. I saw on Facebook that there are Jewish Deadhead groups, Christian Deadhead groups, but no Mormon Deadhead groups. I would LOVE some feedback! Thank you so much for responses.

I already think they stink, but perhaps giving a listen to your favorite tunes will convince me otherwise.

I'm glad you got out of the destructive elements of the scene. Maybe listen to the first 3 songs on "Blues for Allah?" Help on the Way, Slipknot, Franklin's Tower to see what you think. The thing is, the Dead are Rock n Roll, Jazz, Bluegrass, Country and Disco, so it's really hard to choose 3 songs, let alone 3 albums! And their live music is a completely different experience!

I don't like the lifestyle either, I just love to DANCE! There is a whole group of sober Deadheads called "Wharf Rats" that are strong in the scene too. I'm sure you knew that. What show did you go to? Did you get to see Jerry? I'm glad you're able to love their music. I think Jerry's playing is AMAZING and I love Hunter's lyrics.

I don't listen to the 80's music as much as I greatly prefer Keith Godchaux's piano to Brent Mydland's keyboards. 1

I love both Keith and Brent. I LOVE Donna, I have sung in several GD cover bands singing her harmonies, and no I don't wail like her though. Are you devout Mormon?

I don't know if I officially qualify as a "Deadhead" having never been to a show, but I am definitely a big fan! @MiserereNobis is more of the real deal (I think you two have already met), I am just a wannabe MiserereNobis. He is a deadhead, which is cool, but not a Mormon deadhead, which is even cooler, ha! As a mando picker, I am also a huge Grateful Dawg fan and have been able to see David Grisman live. I am probably more of a Phishhead, having grown up more in that generation, but I definitely have a deeper respect for the Dead with their more folk roots. I am a bluegrasser/folk lover at heart and have played banjo and bass for different local jam bands (non-bluegrass style). I also play mando and the dobro. If you have a Spotify account, you can sample our music here. I haven't played with a band in several years and miss it greatly, so I am jealous of you! I'm also a devout member who served a mission in '97. In Utah, there is probably a much larger mix of Latter-day Saints out here and you will definitely find many Mormon Deadheads! Most of my friends growing up who were into the music and drug scene are all inactive or have left the church though. I do know of quite a few Grateful Dead fans who are active though. They have different eras and styles. Their best music is live because of all the improvisation that goes on (think jazz), but for most people the live music is not the best introduction. For example, I absolutely love their song "Playin' in the Band" from a Seattle show in 1973, but it is 42 minutes long, so I wouldn't point you that way as an intro, ha. As an intro, I'm going to recommend their album "American Beauty." From that album: If you like folk: try "Ripple" or "Box of Rain" If you like classic American outlaw songs: try "Candyman" or "Friend of the Devil" If you like harmony driven: try "Attics of My Life" If you like early 70s rock: try: "Sugar Magnolia" or "Truckin'" Enjoy the exploration! 1

I was at all 3 and had an absolute blast. I'm contemplating hitting the Boulder shows this summer (I live in New Mexico).

I play guitar, (only good enough to accompany myself) and wish I could be in a band like you describe! I love Bluegrass! Have you heard of The Storytellers? They do Dead bluegrass style. They play around LA and out in Vegas too. They are awesome! I like Phish, but couldn't keep up with all their music. I love their first 3 albums and saw them a couple times around 91. Where are you in Utah? I visit Provo almost every summer. Are you too busy to be in a band? I took off many years when my kids were young, but now that they are older, I'm able to do more musically. Do you do Facebook or Instagram?
