Bsa suffering huge membership declines

It is more than a perception. There were almost 90,000 plaintiffs in the BSA case so that doesn’t include any previous cases.

There are cases against the church but they don’t come near to that on either a gross or per capita level. In addition many of the cases against the church are not about anyone in the church hierarchy performing the actual abuse. Often it is the more common parents or relatives abuse the child and the case is over the church not doing enough to report or end it. This does not appear to be the case with the BSA.

I suspect the BSA’s number of accusations also surpass those of the Catholic’s within the same time period.

To be fair it should be acknowledged that some cases against the Church do involve misconduct by lay leaders or workers, which would be functionally comparable to unpaid, local-unit, volunteer positions in Scouting, such as Scoutmaster.

Yes, when I said “many” I did not mean “all”.

There are plenty of groups that have predators join up including Hollywood, pop culture, sports, politics, academia, the Olympics, etc. It seems that would better be addressed in another thread.

I’m trying to be upeat about something that has had significant positive impact on my life and my extended family from age 8 to now. If you want to tear it down feel free, but I won’t do it in this thread.

I'm not trying to tear it down.  I don't personally have anything against the BSA and have fond memories of it when my dad was the ward's scout leader for years and years.  He LOVED that time, and he still has old scouts coming to see him though it's been over 20 years now.  I'm being honest.  The BSA have done a lot of good. But they have also caused a lot of harm.  If your experience is valid than so are the experiences of those who have been seriously hurt.

Not wanting to vilify the cause because of all the good it was doing is one of the reasons that we have almost 90,000 scouts who were sexually abused while participating in the organization.  The BSA chose to ignore the bad and focus on the good and all it did was make it easier for predators to use the BSA to hurt kids.

Eventually we've got to learn from our mistakes and do better.

Scouting in the USA

Not to mention the $855 Million settlement for 60,000 victims of sexual abuse.

That plus the Church's withdrawal = bankruptcy

That equals $14,250 per victim.  Sad.

It is not going to be apportioned equally. I think they are dividing based on degree of abuse suffered but I have no idea how that works or who decides the relative harm suffered.

I just noticed this news story in Arizona last night, and it's really sad:

"A Boy Scout council that serves most of Arizona plans to sell its main summer camp near Payson and part of a Phoenix facility to help the national organization settle claims by thousands of victims of child sex abuse. "

They are obviously choosing to sell the properties that will bring in the most money.  The Heard Scout Pueblo property is at the base of South Mountain in Phoenix, and Camp Geronimo is the closest camp in the pines to Phoenix.  They are only keeping Camp Raymond, which is a longer drive from Phoenix and not as developed as Geronimo.

In 2019, the last year we were associated with the Scouting program, we went to Camp Geronimo.  We had scheduled to go to Camp Raymond, but they closed that camp and consolidated everyone at Geronimo to save money.  Geronimo has always been the favorite for most of the troops because of its location.  And the Heard Scout Pueblo site was popular for weekend scouting events during the six non-summer months in Phoenix.  I always took part of the Heard Scout Pueblo site home with me whenever we went there (it was the dust in my sinuses, unfortunately), so it has literally become a part of me.  It's really sad to see these places go.
