Duncan Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 Does anyone know if SLC supplies names for the Temple? Or do the local patrons supply them, ideally they bring their own. I have never been to a Temple when their wasn't a name given me but I have also done my own names or names some member gave me. I can't recall going and them telling sorry but we don't have an names for you to do. I know sometimes names for baptisms have been on the short side but overall does SLC supply names people generate and then given out to the Temples?

Every temple has lists of names needing ordinances. There are plenty, and they never seem to run out of them. Especially now that a time limit has been put on the reserved names which patrons bring. Of course, you will have to wait until the temples open again. Meantime, you could help by doing genealogy online. 2

I have heard that if they are short on names they might recycle some that have already been done, so the patrons don't come and there's nothing for them to do. Not sure how reliable that information is.

But there can be duplicates if two different people submit the same person's name but there are some small differences like year of birth Etc. 3

Not sure how reliable that information is. Sounds dishonest and fishy to me. They have a very difficult time just keeping up with the supply worldwide. Huge numbers of names with appropriate dates and relationships attached are done by millions, including non-members doing their genealogy on familysearch.org. Before the implementation of computer systems, some names were done dozens of times, which is very inefficient. That no longer takes place, unless patrons don't check for duplicates -- which is easy to do.. Edited May 6, 2020 by Robert F. Smith 3

There are complete strangers out there just getting started in the genealogy of their family, and who have no idea how it is done. I try to get them started with free memberships on familysearch.org and ancestry.com. I tell them to be patient. Takes time to learn the methods. COVID-19 has forced many people to seek such diversions, and they find it interesting. I don't discuss indexing with beginners, but have done some batches myself.

Not sure how reliable that information is. As mentioned by Pres Eyring in the latest General Conference, the primary purpose of FamilySearch was to stop this happening accidentally. The Church does everything it can to avoid it. There are always plenty of names for patrons who show up for endowments and related ordinances. In our temple, most of them are patron submitted. (People will sometimes submit thousands of their own family.) 2

Not only does it seem "dishonest and unreliable," it also seems, conveniently, like a tailor-made, agenda-driven accusation of someone(s) with an axe to grind. Very convenient! 4
Scott Lloyd Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 (edited) One of the remarkable but unsung stories in the Church is how the temples are now well -supplied with names from the individual family history efforts of the Latter-day Saints around the world. For so many years the supply had to be augmented by supervised programs of direct extraction of names from records by volunteers who were not related to the persons whose names were extracted. That was necessary to keep the temples functioning. In recent years that has not been necessary. It is attributable to the dIligence of our Church members. I tried to pitch a story on it for the Church News just before my retirement but couldn’t get anybody there to show any interest. Edited May 7, 2020 by Scott Lloyd 2
