Wrapped together as a scroll?

It seems like it would be even harder to roll up something that is melted.

Pahoehoe lava is viscous and slow moving. When it hardens, it can have the appearance of scrolled paper.

Def metaphorical. It even says "as a scroll," which is a sign of scriptural metaphorics. I think Bluebell got closest to my thinking. The scroll is like the word. When the word is rolled up, it is the finishing of the word.  The word has come to its end, and its words concerning the earth are done - or perhaps the words concerning a particular generation are finished and rolled up.

Mormon 9:2 together with D&C teaches precisely what I have said that those resurrected from hell, will have one more chance to accept Christ when they stand before Him, but that they having refused to accept him in life nor the spirit world cannot receive the celestial kingdom. Grace does not extend that far, but only to their salvation in a lower kingdom. Grace saves but it doesn't reward.

Thanks. Another vote for metaphorical. Elements melting....is that also metaphorical?

I don't think taffy qualifies as a liquid, but been too long since chemistryto remember what category it is in.

But it may be an amorphous solid.

What do you think all the elements melted together would look like? Pahoehoe lava comes to mind. I imagine they would be more like amorphous solids than pure liquids.

Or is that metaphorical, too?

I have no clue what it means.  Perhaps they were simply describing something they couldn't understand.

All the elements melted together would look pretty useless to me.

And could you melt all the elements together given their different melting and boiling points?

D&C 130 says,

6 The angels do not reside on a planet like this earth;

7 But they reside in the presence of God, on a globe like a sea of glass and fire, where all things for their glory are manifest, past, present, and future, and are continually before the Lord.

8 The place where God resides is a great Urim and Thummim.

9 This earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who dwell thereon, whereby all things pertaining to an inferior kingdom, or all kingdoms of a lower order, will be manifest to those who dwell on it; and this earth will be Christ’s.

Perhaps that is what all the elements melted together will look like The wrapping and melting may be part of the process by which the earth becomes a sea of glass or crystal. Sound intriguing to me. Would this be metaphorical, too?

Looks more like ropes and braids to me.

Look at the other collection, too. Ropes, braids, rolled up paper, taffy. Lots of shapes.

Think of looking at a scroll from the side.

I think you would have to remove a lot of the elements present in today's earth before it could become glass or crystal.

Nah, first He's gotta flatten it and THEN roll it up.

Ouch.

That's gonna leave a mark. ;)

I haven't really studied the end time, and don't wish to say much about something I may not fully understand. It may be a literal description of something like lava melting the elements together or it may possibly be a description of a spiritual burning of the spirits of the earth into one as the celestial kingdom is established on the earth, and the meek finally inherit it. I have to say I really am not sure. It's one of those future prophecies which seems somewhat purposefully vague to me. There will probably be future revelation about it.

No, you can't melt all the elements together.  You can't even put all the elements together in the same room without blowing up the world.  A lot of them are too unstable or react extremely poorly with each other (and oxygen).  You'd have so many chemical reactions going on it would be a huge poisonous, caustic, radiating, gaseous, smoking, burning crater when it was all done. :D

But can you roll it up?  Having the appearance of a scroll is different to me than actually rolling up something into a scroll.

And if the earth is supposed to be like crystal or glass, how would that work with the whole 'rolled up like a scroll' idea.  Anyone ever tried to roll up glass?  You can roll up melted glass but it's not like a scroll when it's done.  It's like a solid chunk of glass with a cinnamon roll design.

With God all things are possible :)

Certainly all molecules are made up of different elements "melted" together in layman's terms. Water is a melting together of the elements Hydrogen and Oxygen. I wonder if "elements" was that literal a word back then though...

I'm guessing that elements doesn't mean the same thing it means now.  Weren't there just four elements back then, earth, wind, water, and fire?

Exactly.  The whole physics, chemistry of the thing renders it impossible as described as some natural occurrence (similar to but even worse than the belief that extreme speeding up of plate tectonics explains the "days of Peleg" comment, imo).  So either it is a description of something else they didn't know how to detail or metaphoric.

I am okay with either.

Don't be so hasty.  Think big!   What if the Universe is 7 (or 24) dimensions?  It would not take much for a God to roll a 3-dimensional object within a larger lattice.

As my grandpa used to say: “If bullfrogs had wings then their bottoms wouldn’t bump.”

What if the "fervent heat" was hot enough to disassociate component particles down to electrons, protons and even neutrons?  Then the whole thing can be reconstituted to the desired element, say carbon.  Its crystalline structure could be made into graphene or diamond.  Or whatever is required to make it a Urim & Thummim.  The result could be a globe many times the size of current earth.   :hi:

But would the result be 'rolled like a scrolled'?

The scrolling happens first.  Then the heating/transformation.

I believe the scrolling is simply God transporting Earth from its current telestial location back to where it was organized, which is the Terrestrial.  Again it can be imagined that a multi-dimensional universe (7 or 24 or however many) can permit an object to be shifted "instantaneously" to another location (a twinkling of an eye).  In that subset of the universe, there would not be limitations on speed (speed of light) as would occur in "normal" space (the theory of relativity).

Put you down for metaphorical. I recall the  glass-like materials around the nuclear test sites in New Mexico and Nevada

Interesting take on scrolling. Literal, but in a different sense, and literal elements melting together? Note that the order is reversed in 3 Nephi 26.

Perhaps, but all elements would still be included in those four categories, no?
