It’s a real-life illustration of elements melting together. That’s all. How God will command this to happen to the earth remains to be seen. It will be marvelous. I didn't realize we were arguing. You keep asking questions and I'm just answering them to the best of my ability. If we are being literal, the sun isn't an example of elements melting with fervent heat in scripture for a couple of reasons. First, in order for something to 'melt' it has to be in a solid state and transformed into a liquid state. There are no solids on the sun. It's all gas and plasma. Second, it's not just heat that you need to create nuclear fusion, you need lots and lots and LOTS of pressure. That doesn't match the scriptural descriptions of what is causing the melting of elements. From your last statement, it sounds like you see these verses being discussed as being literal. It might be literal, but from my perspective, it's more likely to be metaphorical. (completely off topic but something that I thought was fascinating: Scientists believe that it takes a single photon about 170,000 years to make it from the solar core and 'escape'. That means that the heat that we feel from the sun is likely over a hundred thousand years old (and could be a million years old, depending on who you ask). Very cool!) 1

Wouldn’t we be pleasantly surprised had Mormon said, “and all the elements will turn to gasses and plasma!” But he simply prophesies that the Father will command and it will be done. Given the example of the great ball of burning gas and plasma God made for us that we see every day (well, on some days in Washington), it is not unreasonable to propose something similar to that may happen when the earth is celestialized. After all, a new star appeared at the birth of Christ, and there was a night of no darkness. That’s an impressive show of power over the elements. 6 hours ago, bluebell said: From your last statement, it sounds like you see these verses being discussed as being literal. I have not yet decided how I see them, but I am tending towards literal because I believe a God who has the power to create and destroy stars and worlds probably uses natural laws to accomplish his purposes. 6 hours ago, bluebell said: (completely off topic but something that I thought was fascinating: Scientists believe that it takes a single photon about 170,000 years to make it from the solar core and 'escape'. Someone told me the water in the lakes on Anderson Island near Tacoma comes from an aquifer that flows from Mt Rainier, under the Puget Sound, and surfaces on the island. It takes the water decades to make the trip. Nature is awesome.
