It seems to me that most of my fellow Mormons today will say that they completely accept that the prophet is not infallible. But they can't/won't state any mistake that the prophets have made. I can dismiss most of the troubling issues that have come up during the restoration by accepting that mistakes were made by our leaders. My experience, however, is that most members would rather justify those issues, NOT as mistakes, but as the will of God manifested through our prophet but not understood by mortals. Blacks as fence sitters has been rejected by the Prophets.

So sorry- I hope that "all is well" but I know it is not. I hope it is at least getting better. I cannot imagine. But it could have been much much worse.

Tacenda Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 I think this post applies somewhat to the topic at hand. I have a question about a blessing someone received recently that my sister in law told my mother in law about. She said that this woman received a blessing because she had trouble getting pregnant. In the blessing she was told that because she waited to start to have children, her children were given away to someone else and she shouldn't have waited. And I don't know what was said in the rest of it. I have a daughter and son in law that just last year started to try to get pregnant with no success. She is 30 now, and I wondered if this man that gave the blessing is repeating doctrine. Or something that has been taught over the years. It's the first I had heard of it. I thought it rather mean and uncalled for.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about a rumour of something that supposedly happened to someone. 2

I thought it rather mean and uncalled for. The person giving that blessing is most certainly not repeating doctrine nor anything taught by the church. There is no doctrine I have ever heard of that would teach such a thing when it comes to losing our potential children. The Church teachings on birth control are here - https://www.lds.org/manual/eternal-marriage-student-manual/birth-control?lang=eng None of them mention losing the ability to have children by delaying. The only doctrine remotely similar is what Joseph taught that "When God offers a blessing or knowledge to a man, and he refuses to receive it, he will be damned." I have seen this happen in my own life.
Calm Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 (edited) "The person giving that blessing is most certainly not repeating doctrine nor anything taught by the church." If accurately reported. It doesn't not sound like a blessing that would be recorded. Therefore there is no way to figure out if accurately reported save to ask the individual who gave the blessing if that is what he actually said/meant. Somehow I doubt the woman wanted anymore to do with him after the blessing so if this isn't a case of Mormon folklore being passed on, I think it highly likely misheard and not corrected (understandably so). It sounds like a very emotional topic, one ripe for miscommunication, including in passing on the story. Guesses at what the man actually meant become statements of what he said, etc. Telephone game strikes again. Went through at least four people...the woman (who may or may not have been present) who told the sister-in-law who told the mother-in-law who told Tacenda. Pethaps it wasn't someone they choose to give a blessing because of the type of person they are, but because they were HTers, or something. The alleged blessing is very odd to me. Doesn't seem like a blessing of comfort. Never have heard a blessing of comfort that didn't try to comfort big time. Asking someone to give you a blessing of comfort or healing that can come up with something like that...seems highly unlikely that anyone wouldn't be seeking out someone else more understanding of one's situation. ----- I am not saying it is impossible to have happened, I am just saying the story should be approached with caution.
