When I was on my mission in Sweden in the mid-'70s we drank it a lot: rose hip tea, peppermint tea, etc. So did the local indigenous Latter-day Saints. Please see my prior post: herbal "tea" is not really tea. This should not be an issue. Whether you or someone else does it matters not as to if it is against the WoW or not. I saw your post. Like I said I have seen many things that have said it is tea or it isn't. The only thing I haven't seen is whether the church counts it as tea or not. It isn't an issue for me. I just stated that because I don't have word from the church about it then I don't teach about it.

I just stated that because I don't have word from the church about it then I don't teach about it. It wasn't just me. It was a common thing among the missionaries in the mission. And the Church members as well. If it had been against the Word of Wisdom, it surely would have been forbidden in the mission. My mission presidents (I had three in succession) were anything but lax about commandments and rules. But if you still need convincing, here's a website that deals with the subject. Rain Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 It's not an issue for me Scott. Nothing I need to be convinced about.
Scott Lloyd Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 A bit off topic, but this might be a good place to mention that after Kraft Foods removed Postum from its product line a company came along and bought up the rights and began to manufacture and offer it again. Here's the website. No, I don't have stock in the company. It was a staple in my Mormon family for a number of generations, and I hated to see it go away. I'm glad to see it back again, though it is fairly expensive, and I never drink it by itself anymore. I add it as a flavoring agent to hot chocolate.
Calm Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 https://www.lds.org/ensign/1979/08/i-have-a-question?lang=eng Essentially it says classify as a hot drink if it has negative effects and as a herb to be used with prudence if neutral or positive. Good information about various herbal teas/infusions. 2
Calm Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 Another allowing for careful use of herbal teas: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1977/04/the-dos-in-the-word-of-wisdom?lang=eng

Calm Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 Glad to help. This article talks about Russian Saints substituting herbal teas for tea: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1993/12/love-and-faith-in-st-petersburg?lang=eng 1
Calm Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 One article talked about how asking for specifics in the WoW including herbal teas is one of the top ten questions on one of the Church's websites ( mormon.org I am guessing) and it is in the two or three face to face events I have seen, so it is strange that it hasn't had more info.

I confessed to multiple fornications with several different women as recent as a few weeks before I met with the Bishop and my Bishop didn't even ask me to refrain from taking the sacrament. In fact he told me to increase my temple attendance and he got me called as a Baptistry Coordinator in the temple. He didn't feel it was right to punish me. This was back in June 2013. It's all up to the Bishop. Maybe you have more of a mindset to punish instead of help and motivate and forgive. It is not punishment to have someone not partake of the Sacrament, it is keep a person who is partaking in serious sins from "drinking damnation unto their soul". It is not up to the Bishop, his calling is to follow the guidelines in the Bishop's handbook, and to guide members into the path of true repentance. As an Elder he is required to turn it over to the Stake President. I don't have any mindset to punish, as I am not your Bishop, although your judgement of me is noted. My faith is in Christ and the guidelines set down in scripture and the leadership of the Church. Also, I did not need to know of your sins and was not (since I had not idea) speaking to your post, but speaking in a general way to the comments. I am not your judge or confessor, so I don't see why you felt the need to share your acts to me, while passing judgement on my compassion, or what I might do. Such sins are not up to the Bishop, it is up to the dictates of his calling...after holding a disciplinary counsel. Sexual transgressions of this nature by an Elder or High Priest, must be addressed, especially when recent, often and ongoing.

Do you not believe strongly in the atonement for those who are repentant? Confessing sins is part of the repentance process and the atonement and Jesus have the ability to forgive.

Rivers Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 (edited) I find this scripture very relevant to discussions on the Word of Wisdom. " For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward. Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;" D&C 58:26-27 Edited July 31, 2016 by Rivers 2

Hamba Tuhan Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Herbal 'tea' is no more tea than root beer is beer. Tea, like coffee, is a specific plant. Any product made from tea leaves is tea; any product not made from tea leaves is not. Where I live, this distinction is legally mandated: only tea may be labelled tea; all other steeped beverages must be labelled 'infusions'. 19 hours ago, Calm said: Another allowing for careful use of herbal teas: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1977/04/the-dos-in-the-word-of-wisdom?lang=eng I find it interesting that this article seems to focus on the use of infusions that have known medicinal properties. I think most infusions that I know are rather different. My current favourite contains rooibos, cinnamon, and orange peel. Another of my favourites contains ginger, lemongrass, and lemon peel -- all things Saints would happily cook with. I don't think we have a tradition of self-medicating by means of 'herbs' in these parts. 1
VideoGameJunkie Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Coffee, tea, and soda area all nasty anyway. What does the church say about energy drinks? Those things can mess with your heart and so many mormons drink them.
