A tender moment from the conference

After Elder Kearon's talk just now on refugees, President Uchtdorf was announcing the lineup for the rest of the meeting. He was visibly moved -- to tears. Probably a reflection of his own past history as a refugee.

I was thinking the same thing.  For him, it was very personal.  It was a wonderful talk, I hope it gets shared a lot among members...and nonmembers too.

Amazing talks. I didn't think it could get better after the Women's Conference emphasis. I loved Elder Hales, too. We have a ward member that won't stop telling everyone that the HG will tell them what to do for every decision. Hales considers that trivializing it. He also said that we all receive varying input depending on our needs.

After hearing Elder Keron and Pres. Uchtdorf, I have to admit it was a little jarring to move to Elder Oaks business like language. But he is always good.

Oh my. He is going after the members who call themselves loyal opposition.

I say this will all love and kindness: I don't think Elder Oaks is capable of much else.  I think that's just the way he is.

I have no idea what you are saying. Can you clarify?  I personally love elder Oaks' style (he's always one of my favorites). 

I'm glad the apostles all have different styles. Humans respond differently to different styles so it makes sense that the Lord would take that into account when calling those who will represent Him.

Its not a crime for someone to have a personal style of speaking that doesn't resonate with us personally. Maybe they are saying something in a way that is perfectly suited to impact someone else. 

How we see the world (our own personal opinions, likes and dislikes) is not all that matters.

I would expect Christ to call Apostles that represented the attributes highlighted in the Sermon on the Mount.  Not one who publicly expresses the exact opposite.

As a fellow attorney - and one who sometimes disagrees with Elder Oaks - I can say that I really love his way of speaking. I'm probably in the minority, but I value clarity and a steady flow of thought that is always found in his remarks. And while he often uses numbered lists, his lists are measured and applicable. Some other speakers (IMO) just list as many items for their lists as they can think of.

Yes, Elder Kearon's talk was moving.  President Uchtdorf's tears could be related to his past but I was also moved to tears and I have no close connection to refugees other than my ancestors who fled Nauvoo for Utah.

that's because you're an emotional sissy!  only emotional sissies would hug their children extra tight after the end of that talk!  only emotional sissies would've been deeply moved by that talk!  only emotional sissies would've discussed it at length with their wife right afterwards!!!  i didn't do any of that stuff, nosiree.  i ran outside and did pushups and grew an old timey handlebar mustache because i'm manly and wasn't gonna fall for that sissy baloney.

We're talking about the same Christ who called an apostle who expressed a desire that Judaizers would accidently castrate themselves while performing circumcision right?

I think he was so moved because he and Elder Keron were pretty much on the same wavelength, with Elder Keron's talk pretty much an elaboration of what President Uchtdorf had talked about.  And the Spirit was giving a very powerful message all the way through Elder Keron's talk that a person would have to pretty much be a statue not to be moved. 

I didn't realize President Uchtdorf was a refugee, per se, but I did think of him when Elder Kerry mentioned how some refugees could turn out to be Church leaders, among other noteworthy accomplishments.

I made an interesting discovery today, when my wife emailed me after watching Elder Kieran's talk in General Conference.  It seems that her mother was Sis. Kieran's visiting teacher around the time when they first joined the Church, in England!  Amazing coincidences, and one other coincidence is that one of my wife's friends once met the only man I baptized in Germany on my mission!  He was the bishop of the ward where she went as a foreign exchange student.  And that sister's husband is a long-time friend of another LDS member I knew when I lived in England 40 some years ago!  

It seems that we are a church of interconnections!
