Avatar4321 Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Quote Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven. (D&C 121:45) What does it mean that the doctrines of the priesthood shall distil upon our souls? What are the doctrines of the priesthood referred to here? How do they distil upon us?

Popular Post Buckeye Posted December 22, 2015 Popular Post Posted December 22, 2015 (edited) My understanding of the phrase "doctrines of the priesthood" comes from reading the entire passage that begins at D/C 121:34. Priesthood does not work through compulsion or unrighteous dominion (v. 36-39) Priesthood only works through "persuasion, long-suffering, gentleness and meekness, love unfeigned, kindness, pure knowledge, appropriate reprovals, charity towards all, and virtuous thoughts" (v. 41-45) As those principles are applied in one's life, they "distil" upon the priesthood holder to make them more like Christ. Through that process, the priesthood holder is able to justly rule greater dominions, again without compulsion. I can't explain the "disilling" except to say that I've seen it happen in several men's lives, most poignantly in my father's. I'm the oldest child. I recall him as a young and stressed-out father. I know his mistakes and natural self. And I know how that nature has been changed through his embrace of the priesthood. Seeing the priesthood work in his life is one of the cornerstones of my testimony. That experience is why I strive to obtain the priesthood and abide by its principles. It's why I encourage my sons to do so. And it's why I pray and supplicate for day the when my wife, daughters, sisters, and other women will have the same opportunity for the doctrine of the priesthood to distill upon them. filovirus Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Could it be referring to the Holy Spirit of Promise? No priesthood ordinance or action is sealed in heaven until ratified and sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

It already does for any woman who follows those same principles, and particularly for those women who are temple ordinance workers. 3

Deuteronomy 32:2 "My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:" The Hebrew word for "doctrine" here is liqḥî “my teaching, instruction” (leqaḥ) = LXX Greek apophthegma “wise saying, aphorism.” 1

I think the doctrine (the singular is used in D&C 121) of the priesthood is all that is entailed with becoming gods, and that it has to do with being “crowned with blessings from above, yea, and with commandments not a few, and with revelations in their time,” individually and as a member of Zion. Distillation has to do with extracting the essential meaning or most important aspects of this doctrine. In the case of priesthood or the power of God, I think we are taught that this is becoming an eternal Father and Mother. It also means we are covered by and with the Atonement, charity and grace. 1
Ahab Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 All of our doctrine, or at least all of our Lord's doctrine, comes to us through the priesthood, so not only will we understand the correct definition of the priesthood and doctrine but also what the priesthood and doctrine involves and includess as well as how to use it/receive it. And yes women can also use/receive the priesthood even though they are not ordained to any office of the priesthood. 1

I loved all of what you had to say (beat me to it) . . . but . . . I can't speak for your womenfolk, but the distilling has been happening with me since I took up my first covenant (baptism) until this day. LOTS of priesthood distilling going on with me. 2
Maidservant Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Priesthood also has to do with men and women becoming one. Heck, Priesthood has to do with everything. 2

Ordination to priesthood office and access to the priesthood orders are not the same thing. All members have access to the priesthood orders if they prepare themselves 1

Fortunately that day is here (and has been since approximately 1830) since all people of any gender can already have the doctrine of the priesthood distill upon their souls, meaning, in part at least, that they, through faithfulness to gospel principles, can learn about and understand the priesthood line upon line and precept upon precept. Women not having priesthood conferred upon them in the same way men do does not prevent them from experiencing such distillation.
salgare Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 (edited) I believed that this was closely related to the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood, which referred to Temple covenants, which promises of advancement (Aaronic(2) level administration of Angels, Melchizedek(3) level to know the mysteries of Godliness) was not something one received upon the day of their live "endowment" but trickles down over ones life as they grew in these Oaths and Covenants as they climb the tree feeling and seeking for God's presence. I've yet to experience the inner doctrines of those higher priesthoods. ETB referred to those higher priesthoods as "The Holy Order", which is what I was also taught to believe at the Temple. salgare Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I was taught that ecclesiastical priesthood is weak sauce and temporary. 1

The church has done well in giving the authority of the priesthood to members but the power of the priesthood is not something that can be given by anyone but the Lord himself. This process of obtaining the power of the priesthood can only be given by heaven. We are like babies when it comes to understanding and using the priesthood. But if we are righteous and diligent, understanding comes slowly but surely. Elder McConkie spoke on this very topic in General Conference in a talk aptly titled, "The Doctrine of the Priesthood", it is worth a read. Here are a few interesting points: Quote Faith and priesthood go hand in hand. Faith is power and power is priesthood. After we gain faith, we receive the priesthood. Then, through the priesthood, we grow in faith until, having all power, we become like our Lord. ...The holy priesthood did more to perfect men in the days of Enoch than at any other time. Known then as the order of Enoch (see D&C 76:57), it was the power by which he and his people were translated. And they were translated because they had faith and exercised the power of the priesthood. ...Those who receive the Melchizedek Priesthood covenant and promise, before God and angels, to magnify their callings, to “live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God” (D&C 84:44), to marry for time and all eternity in the patriarchal order, and to live and serve as the Lord Jesus did in his life and ministry. In return the Lord admits them to his eternal patriarchal order, an order that prevails in the highest heaven of the celestial world, an order that assures its members of eternal increase, or in other words of spirit children in the resurrection. (See D&C 131:1-4). 1
