ERayR Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Utah Boy Scout Councils having trouble raising funds. See here: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/donations-drop-for-scouts-in-utah-after-gay-leader-decision/ar-BBn2qns?li=AAa0dzB&ocid=mailsignout
jwhitlock Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Interesting. There seems to have been quite a bit of frustration with Friends of Scouting drives, and it looks like many people decided that the gay leader issue - despite the church's decision to stay with scouting - was reason enough to cut their own personal ties through their donations.
Storm Rider Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 When you change who you are and become what those that hate you desire, who is your friend? You have violated the trust of those who have supported you for decades. Those who hate you continue to hate you and will never support you. What did the BSA expect? They are in a very, very tough position. I wonder what the organization will look like in thirty years? To forfeit their morals is to forfeit their integrity. It will be extremely difficult for parents to trust this organization again or to regain any degree of trust in them in the future. 3
sunstoned Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I also think the publication of the salaries for the top BSA executives several years ago impacted donations. 1
bluebell Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I also think the publication of the salaries for the top BSA executives several years ago impacted donations. That's what caused my husband to stop donating.
Storm Rider Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Agreed. I don't accept or condone such salaries. Consequently, I stopped contributing several years ago.
ERayR Posted November 16, 2015 Author Posted November 16, 2015 I also think the publication of the salaries for the top BSA executives several years ago impacted donations. That one was long enough in the past that I don't think it had much influence in this. This IMO is a direct result of the homosexual issue.
KevinG Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 FOS sucks. Now that I've established my opinion on that... There has been some siphoning off of funds and membership within the BSA units here in the South with youth going to Heritage Scouts and other groups. Given that gay scouts are a very, very, very small population of the BSA, I think things will level off somewhat. Behind the scenes self chartered groups have been told we must find a chartering organization in a church or community group or we will not be rechartered. Gates decision to punt the liability back to the units has consequences.

juliann Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 The BSs had lost favor before this change. Admitting gays was seen as an end to a means with dumping BSs the real goal. There was hope that the Church would do their own less costly program that included all youth. So I think blaming this on admitting gays is coming from someone who doesn't spend much time with Mormons.

I have missed two Sundays in the past year and have fallen out of touch.
mnn727 Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Friends of Scouting goes to pay for First Class airfare and 4 Star Hotels for the BS big shots.Yes, I have proof: my DW works for the company that handles their travel arrangements.

Just curious, would you take exception if LDS church leaders did the same? 1

This year it was almost scary how my neighbor wouldn't let up on our donating. He would not take no, but finally.... We've never been hit so hard to donate. And believe me we only quit donating since seeing some things we didn't agree with. Nothing to do with gays, that I agree with. I've heard or seen more abuse from straight people.
mnn727 Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Just curious, would you take exception if LDS church leaders did the same?Totally different situation to me, Especially with the salaries the BSA Council leaders are pulling down.
Storm Rider Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Just curious, would you take exception if LDS church leaders did the same? Hmm, a 90 year old man flying all over the world to lead people to Christ. Then on the other side we have a boys organization that is able to function solely by contributions and hires professionals to lead their organization. I can understand why you don't see the difference. It is not screaming at you. Yeah, I only hope these elderly men fly first class and stay in the best hotels on their travels. 1
Calm Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 (edited) I wonder if lower level BSA employees log enough time on flying on company accounts to bump their bosses up to first class or if they have to pay full price.First class makes sense to me when traveling is consuming enough time and energy to interfere with job performance amd the person needs to arrive in decent shape to make good use of their time on the ground...plus 70 and 80 sitting in cramped quarters for hours on end...not the safest. 4 star hotel (sorry, meant 5 star) not so much needed, good bed and clean facilities definitely needed, great view, fine art works and furniture in the room...lots of personal attention from staff, not so much. jbarm Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Four star hotels? Most downtown Marriott hotels are four star hotels. Not luxurious. Five star hotels are the Ritz Carltons and the like -- luxe. Since everyone is talking about 'final straws' in the other threads, I would say that my 'final straw' with Friends of Scouting was the capitulation of BSA to the gay rights folks. I have always disliked the heavy pressure to donate, plus the avoidance of where the money really goes when asking for donations, but I did it because overhead still needs to be paid. I note that the leaders of Utah Scout councils are making $150k plus benefits -- a little rich in an area where they haven't had to do a lot of selling to get their funding thanks to FOS. My grandfather was an Eagle Scout, my father, myself and my son. I've been a Scout leader numerous times over the years. I have just lost my belief that the core BSA still supports my own values. 3
readstoomuch Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I see many points I agree with. I just find my heart isn't in it. I would like to have our own program. 3.50 for each merit badge. Scouting costs too much! Don't even get me started on FOS. Didn't donate this year. 1
