KevinG Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 It seems apparent that you think I'm lecturing you, since you quoted a part of my post. Do you think I'm a non-believer? Do you take offense at the way I characterized LDS who go off on odd doctrinal tangents because of misunderstandings over the meanings of words? I assure you that I am a TBM. And I've run into non-members who have told me some pretty incredible things about what we believe because some member of their acquaintance did not understand his or her own doctrine or belief, and then promulgated it as if it were true. I wasn't referring to you either. And you are obviously TBM in bright bold letters. Sigh.
Jeanne Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Yes, one of my very LDS FB friends will share the advertisement sometimes. I'm like whoa, I guess it's ok now. BTW, I've mentioned this once or twice on this board. A few years ago, in my preventative state of mind I called the church office building asking to speak with someone about green tea being allowed. It just seem so fuzzy on the answers out there. The gentlemen who answered pretty much said yes in my mind, and that he had heard of some LDS doctors who drank it. But he did say it was up to me or the spirit, can't remember. He really left me hanging. No clear cut answer at all. I asked because I had heard it was good for preventing Alzheimer's, now I hear that all the time about coffee. For the past 10 years or so..I have heard nothing but good things about the benefits of tea..even on your skin..Of course, I don't like anything that is good for me!
KevinG Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 The only reason God exempted chocolate from the Word of Wisdom is because it is not good for man to be without women in the church. 1
ERayR Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 I would never choose my health routine by the latest report in the news. They overstate the claims of the studies way too often for one thing. They don't usually discuss potential interactions and the studies generally focus on only one aspect of health while disregarding others...one needs to balance as you say the give and take, especially given that individuals' sensitivities to drugs (and any herb or plant used medicinally would be a drug) vary so much. And they are constantly changing.
Stargazer Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I wasn't referring to you either. And you are obviously TBM in bright bold letters. Sigh. Well and good. I thought you might have slipped a memory disk. 1
strappinglad Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I'm guessing that these 'plants' are among those we need to be prudent about. Why anyone would want to become accustomed to such pain is beyond me. http://www.cayennediane.com/big-list-of-hot-peppers/ We should remember that medical science once extolled the virtues of heroine and cocaine , and cigarettes for that matter. Marijuana is supposedly great for all kinds of illnesses ,including hangnails if one is to believe some California advocates. Meth is not specifically prohibited by the WoW , yet it is not advisable to use it unless one wants severe weight loss and bad skin and teeth. Talk about jots and tittles. 1
Storm Rider Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Well according to the medical establishment tea and coffee are good for you. But instead the LDS are only allowed the bad stuff, such as Diet Coke etc. Since caffeine is ok now. Still wondering what the chemical is in tea and coffee. I wonder if it's the appearance of evil sort of thing. Coffee and cigarettes going together, etc., I've heard that before. I think the church would be more legitimate with the WoW had they stuck with the sodas with caffeine being a no-no.But could never see our church allowing coffee and tea, just like I doubt it will ever have a cross in our meetinghouses. Hello Tacenda, Your understanding seems to be most prevalent among Utah Mormons. It is always best to go to the text - read the 89th Section. It is a promise between God and the saints. Observance of this eating standard has specific blessings. It is not the beginning or ending of proper nutrition, but a specific promise to the saints. It is entirely acceptable to pursue additional nutritional standards based upon the understanding of men or just plain old common sense. If we violate the standards of the Word of Wisdom we do not have the promise of the blessings. It is our choice. Anything beyond what is clearly stated in the Word of Wisdom is not the Word of Wisdom, but the speculations of humans and has nothing to do with the promises the Lord has given. This is a simple teaching and people want to muck it up at every turn - we seem thrown to be pharisees. Stick to the scripture and you will not go wrong.

Talk about jots and tittles. You don't need to burn your sense of taste out of your mouth in order to enjoy hot peppers. A little heat never hurt anyone. Except for maybe people from Sweden. As to marijuana, I've heard all kinds of hype about its health benefits. Most of it sounds like tripe, though. I will say this, my wife has used it for her current medical condition and it has been of some benefit in controlling nausea, and surprisingly enough, perking up her attention instead of being constantly in a drug fog from the morphine etc she has to have. 1
KevinG Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Hot peppers release endorphins in men. It's kind of like our chocolate.
Storm Rider Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I think the whole tea and coffee part of the WoW is hard to make sense out of. I don't drink either of these but I don't think a person is sinning if they do. Mainly now all one can fall back on as a reason (now that caffeine has been addressed as not being against the WoW) is that we just don't know why but we still need to be obedient. The whole staying away from hot drinks falls apart because members drink hot chocolate and hot cider and more. Also chocolate has caffeine too so that's another prior contradiction. Maybe the addiction is part of it too but people get addicted to soda. So you come back to what is so bad about tea or coffee? This is a wonderful bit of rationalization; it is the kind that takes someone from holding to the iron rod and then finding themselves a prisoner in the big house with a big smile on their face. What does the 89th Section say? Did God explain why he gave it? Did he provide a complete answer? Do you need a complete answer to be obedient? What is the issue?

Avatar4321 Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 "Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation" (D&C 89:4)It seems to me that this is a verse we don't often discuss when talking about why we have the Word of Wisdom.
saemo Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 (edited) Sounds like your Bishop and SP were coffee/tea drinkers. It's true coffee/tea aren't mentioned as things to avoid in the WoW, but on the other hand "mild barley drinks" are good for consumption but are currently denied. Although, I guess if you get a Bishop or SP that is up for that kind of interpretation you'd be good with beer as well.Other drugs are not mentioned in the WoW. Do they skip everything that is not "mentioned" in the WoW? Just curious. It seems like if word got out the stakes population would swell with migrating members. In the ward history that a kind neighbor gave to me years ago. It includes the history of a store that was on a intersection. They sold ice cream in the front, and mild barley drinks in the back. Curious, I looked up what in the heck was going on with that. What I could find, is that with the invention of Pilsner (pale yellow lager), people didn't view it as "real" beer. "Real" beer, for the time, was dark, higher in alcohol content and like drinking a loaf of bread. So the good LDS folks of my ward, back in the day, drank mild barley drinks, but not "real" beer. I bought a case of it for my wife, as a taste of home. It has no alcohol. Now let the quibbles begin. Edited August 25, 2015 by Stargazer

Stargazer Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Hahaha! Growing up, Postum was our mild barley drink. I liked it. But this thing....wheat and barley....and malted. Gross. I prefer Pero. Postum sucks. But this Karamalz? It's not something that you have to develop an acquired taste for, like caviar. It tastes wonderful upon first sip! It's expensive, though, so I only get it for special occasions. Don't knock it just because you haven't tasted it. Hey, PM me your mailing address and I'll ship you a bottle. I guarantee you'll like it! 1

Doctor Steuss Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Somewhat on topic (and funny because of the mention of chocolate), I just stumbled upon this in an entry from Extracts From The Journal of Heber C. Kimball. I think this is the only reference I've seen to small beer in an LDS journal/letter. Plenty of references to beer, but I can't recall ever reading a reference to small beer before this. The temperance reformation in England commenced in Preston just previous to our arrival there, and it was often said by temperance men who joined the Church that the movement was a preparatory work or forerunner to the introduction of the Gospel; in most every place we went where there was a Temperance Hall we could get it to preach in, many believing that we made men temperate faster than they did; for as soon as any obeyed the Gospel they abandoned their excesses in drinking; and none of us drank any kind of spirits, porter nor small beer, nor even wine, neither did we drink tea, coffee or chocolate.

Talk about jots and tittles. We still use derivatives of the opium plant in medicine. IE; Morphine, and cocaine in Dentistry. IE; Novocain. Tobacco still can be used as a dewormer for animals. and Marijuana has shown advantages in curing the stomach sickness/lack of appetite associated with Chemotherapy. We are to use these things with skill and wisdom. It is the misuse of these and other things that get us into trouble. 1
