jkwilliams Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 What child would that be, since according to DNA testing none have been found except through Emma. Got evidence others have not found? Or is this just a cheap shot? The Bible is filled with flawed Prophets...as all men are flawed. Just sayin Did you not read the OP?
jkwilliams Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Theocratic Ethics in which anything is ok if it is believed God commanded it has led to many "grim" events such as Mountain Meadows, Catholic inquisitions, witch trials, suicide bombers etc. If I believe God told me to do something OR if I believe God told a prophet to tell me to do something then anything is possible. It's a little scary. Yep. We justify Nephi's killing of Laban because God commanded it, but then the Laffertys say that God commanded them to kill a toddler. 1
Kevin Christensen Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 We could consider 28 Biblical Keys for Discerning True and False Prophets. http://en.fairmormon.org/Biblical_Keys_for_Discerning_True_and_False_Prophets Or, make up our own, and see how far that gets us. Avatar4321 Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 The answer is yes.But it seems this thread is more interested in polygamy than the title. 1
JLHPROF Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Yes. Joseph was and is a prophet of God. I suppose it depends on whether people can handle a prophet fathering a child with a married woman. Some people can handle a flawed prophet, and some can't. Depends if you consider that a flaw. 1
Guest Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Did you not read the OP?I read your words that Joseph fathered a child by a married woman...did I read "you" wrong? If so tell me where and I will apologize.
jkwilliams Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I read your words that Joseph fathered a child by a married woman...did I read "you" wrong? If so tell me where and I will apologize. The question was whether it would matter if Joseph Smith had fathered a child with Sylvia Lyon. I said that it would depend on whether you were OK with a prophet fathering a child with a married woman. It was a hypothetical question.

It liked like the op said it happen and you affirmed. If not I guess I read both wrong.
Avatar4321 Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I've noticed that the church encourages us yo always father children with married women.
jkwilliams Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I've noticed that the church encourages us yo always father children with married women. Yes, but usually not with someone else's wife.
JLHPROF Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Yes, but usually not with someone else's wife. Many in the Church at that time didn't consider the civil marriages as binding once eternal marriage was revealed.
jkwilliams Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Yes. Joseph was and is a prophet of God. Depends if you consider that a flaw. I consider sleeping with other women without your wife's knowledge or consent to be evidence of a flawed person, indeed. My wife informs me she would consider it a flaw (to put it mildly) if I were to do that.
jkwilliams Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Many in the Church at that time didn't consider the civil marriages as binding once eternal marriage was revealed. I know the rationale behind it, but it doesn't make it right, IMO. I'm kind of old-fashioned in that I think my wife deserves to know if I'm having sex with someone else. 1

God wins.
jkwilliams Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Nah. God says do action A. Wife says action A is not going to happen. You do action A anyway. God vs wife. God wins. Not according to D&C 132.
JLHPROF Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Not according to D&C 132. Uh? Yeah. Vs 65 - Therefore, it shall be lawful in me, if she receive not this law, for him to receive all things whatsoever I, the Lord his God, will give unto him, because she did not believe and administer unto him according to my word; and she then becomes the transgressor; and he is exempt from the law of Sarah, who administered unto Abraham according to the law when I commanded Abraham to take Hagar to wife. 1

Well, that sucks. Even more reason to dislike that section. 1
JLHPROF Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) Well, that sucks. Even more reason to dislike that section. Didn't realize God's will and word were subject to our approval.I think I'd like to drop D&C 89 and go get hammered now... And while we're at it, never really liked the entire Mosaic law. Let's drop all that since Christ fulfilled it anyway. Edited July 30, 2015 by JLHPROF 1
jkwilliams Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Didn't realize God's will and word were subject to our approval. They're not. Of course, I don't believe section 132 represents the will or word of God.
JLHPROF Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 They're not. Of course, I don't believe section 132 represents the will or word of God. Ah, I see. We get to decide which scriptures are true and which are not. I suppose there is some truth to that position, testimony does matter after all.But it's a slippery slope when people start denying scripture. After all, the fundamentalists reject OD1, OD2, and much of the Proclamation. Then we'd still have polygamy and the priesthood ban. The CoC/RLDS reject much of the Nauvoo doctrine, including the temple endowment. So bye bye eternal families. Dangerous ground for sure, but testimony is important.

Of course everyone decides what to believe. I once believed everything you do, but I don't now. You make it sound like I just decided I don't like certain things, so I don't have to believe them anymore. That's silly, 1
Thinking Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Nah. God says do action A. Wife says action A is not going to happen. You do action A anyway. God vs wife. God wins. Husband thinks God says to do action A. Wife says A is not going to happen. Husband doesn't do action A because he realizes that his own fallibility might have caused him to misinterpret God's will. God's misinterpreted will vs wife. Wife wins. Husband lives. 1

Tacenda Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) Joseph was married to Sylvia right? People consummate marriages right? He was married, not sealed or sealed after. Why is this guy that is researching, so worried about it? BTW, my nephews all came from the Josephine line. Someone in their family who does genealogy has verified Josephine is the daughter of Joseph. Edited July 30, 2015 by Tacenda 1
