ERayR Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 What Two BYU Professors Discovered Concealed Under a Classroom Stool Has Led to a Campus Police Investigationhttp://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/11/18/what-two-byu-professors-discovered-concealed-under-a-classroom-stool-has-led-to-a-campus-police-investigation/ Just to record open and public lectures? Wonder what they thought they were going to get. Note William Hamblin's response.
Doctrine 612 Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 It could be a student that did not want to wake up early for the class so put it there to review later.Seeing that they found other chairs with Velcro under them as well.

Robert F. Smith Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Is Ernie Wilkinson still conducting surveillance? Looking for traitors and who knows what else under every chair?
thesometimesaint Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I was at BYU under Dallin H. Oaks, needless to say he wasn't a fan of some of the actions of Ernest L. Wilkinson.
ERayR Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Is Ernie Wilkinson still conducting surveillance? Looking for traitors and who knows what else under every chair? I don't know I thought it weird that some one would clandestinely record something that the instructor would have given him a copy of if he/she would have asked.
Tacenda Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Maybe BYU was taping the instructors/professors at hand, it's not all that unreasonable since there have been a few LDS instructors who've left the church, even recently. The culprit/culprits could just be some higher ups, and letting it look like it was an outside job. The link below is about a former CES teacher who recently resigned. Maybe they are being proactive, and are monitoring what is being taught in their classrooms. http://mormonstories.org/kirk-caudle-on-mormon-studies-working-for-byu-idaho-and-more/
Buzzard Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 It could be a student that did not want to wake up early for the class so put it there to review later.Seeing that they found other chairs with Velcro under them as well.Simplest explanation, and the most likely. If a BYU prof really went off the rails in class, odds are that his supervisors would be let in on the situation.

All they have to do is sit in on the classes or ask instructors fr transcripts.

Students do this all the time in Colleges and Universities everywhere.
katherine the great Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 My money is on the ski-kid, missed lecture hypothesis. Most professors I know will not give notes, power points, etc to students who miss class (unless they have a really good excuse). They are expected to set up their own network with other students in case of a missed lecture. Although, unless the professor stated that they cannot tape the class, I don't know why it would have to be velcro'd under a stool.
tonie Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 From KSL: Lemmon described the recorder as a small, digital device that was easily concealed. Investigators were unable to review much of what had been recorded because the audio was inadvertently erased when the recorder was found, ... This claim is built on a sandy foundation. Digital files - these records were most likely digital - can be recovered quite easily; and often are recovered quite easily when police intentionally delete a persons electronic files. and fingerprinting is out of the question due to the number of people who handled the device before it was handed over to police. Multiple devices discovered, likely with a single handler. Not to mention prints on the under side of the chairs, and very likely on the sticky part of the velcro. And no oen is going to attempt fingerprinting? Lemmon's statement, suggests to me, there isn't much interest in trying to determine the who, why, when of all this. Students acting on their own, just to skip lectures or gets notes, does not seem a viable answer. I suppose someone in a class could have zero friends/acquantences etc willing to record the lecture (even if the the Professor said "no recordings" student do easily conceal records), or be unable to find any fellow class mate willing to share notes.
Kenngo1969 Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 It's a ... [Hushed whisper] ... conspiracy! Sure you're hot on the trail, there, tonie: be sure to report back whatever you find! This message will self-destruct in five . . . four . . . three . . .
Calm Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Given it would cost money to recover the recording plus it wouldn't tell who it belonged to given it was voice activated and would cover all conversations held in the room, there seems little reason to put in the work. It is hardly newsworthy IMO and I am rather surprised it was even reported by the media. Would it have been at any other university? (serious question as it is possible but it seems like a nobrainer to me). This is like having a report on a vending machine accidentally stocked with Coke (iirc).

One such program, which I use is called Recuva, it has come in handy several times after I accidentally deleted files.
