Avatar4321 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I read a comment about this meeting on another board, they were making guesses also, one person said his wife was in the Deseret Bookstore and saw that this book http://deseretbook.c...ensen/i/5097487 was on the best seller list and thought it fishy because apparently they didn't think it was best seller stuff, anyway he thought it was to be correlated with the meeting this Sunday. And was being heavily promoted for that reason. Not sure if he and his wife are right about that. I think the meeting will get members in on the action of missionary work, and possibly ask members to help with donations, since there are so many missionaries that might need funding. My neighbor will have two sons serving missions soon. The one has been out for a few months and the other is set to go in a few months, they're struggling with paying for just one son. I bet this is happening everywhere with siblings going out at the same time.Also, Buckeye mentioned getting the missionaries iPads and doing missionary work using them. Maybe they will use it like they are with YW & YM's Sunday School classes. I'll bet they will start doing that to show the Mormon Messages Youtubes, Conference Talks etc., especially for non members that don't have that capability. So maybe donations for this also. And BTW, Buckeye might have hit on something, using the YW & YM program as a mini MTC makes perfect sense to me!I got that book recently. didnt have anything to do with the meeting. Just saw the title and felt desire to do more about my personal missionary work. I liked some parts. Others didnt imrpess me much, not that they would be unimportant. Id recommend it though.

My books to read pile is over 30 books thick now. Need to start paring that down and stop buying new ones. 2

Worked for Jesus and Ammon quite well.2) admit the church is fallible and apologize to all who have been inadvertently hurt by incorrect traditions (e.g. Blacks, homosexuals, women, etc.). Humility is endearing, pride is not. Kudos to Kevin Kloosterman and Marlin Jensen.3) release approximately 99% of shame and guilt held by young men by admitting that the M word is not a sin, instead of just quietly removing all references from guidebooks and conference talks, and hoping everyone will get the hint. Then they can focus on missionary work.1) I could see something like that, though I dont know that it would make it the meeting of a century.2) Don't see that happening, especially considering what you are trying to claim are incorrect traditions.3) I don't really see this as an overwhelming problem. Nothing is wrong with guilt anyway. It helps us realize when we are doing something wrong. In fact, i highly expect we will hear more exhortation to live the law of chastity in all of it's facets.

Some of the advice was a bit too mechanical to me. That really isnt the right word, but i cant think of the one i am really thinking of. And dont get me wrong, i know missionary work isnt all mircles and such. It's work. I just have a hard time thinking of doing the things. I tend not to notice missionary opportunities until after they've past and im like "Shoot"

Though im not really sure it's a good idea to tempt God that way.

The members were all abuzz about the change in age for missionaries but this was hardly new. It has been the standard practice in many other countries, and missionaries in North America were allowed to go at 18 if they had the funds and an endorsement from their priesthood leaders. It was not a new announcement, it was more of a rationalizing of the program around the world. Even the publication of preach my gospel has had no material change. Good teachers do not need better material. Bad teachers will continue to be bad no matter what material you provide them.With respect, I think you missed the boat on the age change. The big change had nothing to do with the men. Sure maybe going at 18 helps a few elders here and there. The big change and the buzz was around women being able to serve at age 19. Instead of being a back-up plan to marriage that would greatly interrupt any college education, now a young woman can plan and serve a mission. Currently 45% of the missionaries in the MTC are sisters. This is a huge change that has a very real impact on the lives of every young woman in the church and a real impact on their future spouses / children. Edited June 18, 2013 by SeekingUnderstanding

True, YW do not have a priesthood duty to serve because they are excluded from priesthood service. But I get the feeling that our church culture is moving to the point where YW are "expected" to serve just as much as YM.Not going to happen.I was in a training meeting recently with Elder Ballard . A bishop asked how he should respond when people in his ward made comments that suggested the young women really need to serve missions. Of that comment and that kind of pressure, Elder Ballard said, "you kill that."He could not have been more clear.

Unless someone else is planning to need the well there is little point.
