Does Lds Doctrine Contradict The Bible?

Let us follow Christ's great example in every aspect of marriage. Rev. Ronald Hanko

Since such men are unlikely to believe that Christ was married, I guess they want all of us to be single.

Well, they believe Christ and everyone else is single in heaven, though still together.

The Book of Leviticus

Chapter 18

17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is wickedness.

18 Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.

Joseph Smith took sisters for wives and a mother and daughter for wives. Is it ok to cherry pick the Leviticus marriage? Just leave behind what you don't want. Emily & Eliza Patridge were sisters. Patty & Sylvia Sessions were mother & daughter. http://en.wikipedia....of_Joseph_Smith

Lets look at some other translations, ok? Leviticus 18:18 NIV

New International Version

" 'Do not take your wife's sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living. Leviticus 18:18 ASV

American Standard Version

And thou shalt not take a wife to her sister, to be a rival [to her], to uncover her nakedness, besides the other in her life-time.Leviticus 18:18 CEB

Common English Bible

You must not marry your wife's sister as a rival and have sexual contact with her while her sister is alive.Leviticus 18:18 CJB

Complete Jewish Bible

You are not to take a woman to be a rival with her sister and have sexual relations with her while her sister is still alive.Leviticus 18:18 RHE

Douay-Rheims

Thou shalt not take thy wife’s sister for a harlot, to rival her: neither shalt thou discover her nakedness, while she is yet living.Leviticus 18:18 GW

GOD'S WORD Translation

While your wife is living, never marry her sister as a rival wife and have sexual intercourse with her.Leviticus 18:18 CSB

Holman Christian Standard

You are not to marry a woman as a rival to her sister and have sexual intercourse with her during her [sister's] lifetime. Leviticus 18:18 LEB

Lexham English Bible

And you must not take [as wife] a woman with her sister, to be a rival-wife, to expose her nakedness before her {during} her life. Leviticus 18:18 NIRV

New International Reader's Version

" 'Do not take your wife's sister as another wife and have sex with her. Do not do it while your wife is still living.Leviticus 18:18 MSG

The Message

"Don't marry your wife's sister as a rival wife and have sex with her while your wife is living.Leviticus 18:18 TNIV

Today's New International Version

" 'Do not take your wife's sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living. . . . . . . . . . . . . So, I guess you are saying that Jacob of old violated this commandment, because he married sisters AND HAD SEX WITH THEM. So, do you think he could not have been a prophet?

Christ is betrothed to the church. Marital laws are only in effect while on Earth. In Heaven we (the church) will be married to Christ only. (Romans 7)

Humm, And if you use a different set of scriptures you will end up with the opposite answer. . . . . . . . . . 1 Tim 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; . . . . . . . . . 1 Pet 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. ... . . . . . . . . . Jesus is a Bishop, so he must be married. And since He is in heaven and is married, then there are marriage laws of some kind in heaven.

You can read it however you want.

I don't have a particular ax to grind or a prophet's interpretation to defend. The only marriage in Heaven that I read about in the biblical text is between Christ and his bride, the church.

Ah, but God did command it at one time. See D&C 132.

He probably commanded it in more instances than that, as implied in Jacob 5.

The notion that if the Bible doesn't say it it never happened is in itself unbiblical.

I guess we need to repeat ourselves. "uncover nakedness" clearly refers to the temporal marriage.

Now show us where it forbids sealing (eternal marriage). We have talked about this difference until we are blue in the face.

It is NOT ok to cherry pick scriptures which you misrepresent.

Apparently, you DO!.

Because that is the only one you WANT to see. . . . . . . . . . . . . BTW, were Adam and Eve married?

I don't understand your logic here. I am tired but still....

The verses you quoted do not refer to sealings. We have discussed this difference between temporal marriage (to which these verses refer) and sealings in the context of Joseph Smith.

Did you miss that discussion?

I was talking about the way polygamy was lived through JS, and others after him. What are you talking about? If you and others on this board are comparing Levirate marriage to polygamy. Sorry if I've misunderstood, if this isn't the case.

OK, I get it now. I agree with you that such an apologetic argument be very suspect.

If I am missing a biblical passage where a different marriage is referenced in Heaven, feel free to share it. I am all ears.

Adam and Eve appeared to be the first marriage yes.

Who married them?

They married each other, with God putting the two of them together. Marriage is when 2 come together and unite as one.

Why do you ask? IF you wish to make a point why do it this way?

If I were to speculate who married them, I'd say God himself.

Matt 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh.

What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. ... ... ... ...

Eccl 3:14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. .. . . . . . . So, quite clearly, Adam and Eve are married FOREVER (that includes in heaven).

  • 1) take somebody in marriage: to commit yourself to somebody, or yourselves to each other, formally in marriage
  • 2)join two people in marriage: to officiate at somebody's marriage ceremony and give legal sanction or a religious blessing to the marriage
  • 3)give somebody in marriage: to give somebody, usually a child or ward, to somebody in marriage, or bring about his or her marriage to somebody

If I were you I'd look for a definition of marriage that doesn't require the use of the word marriage in the definition.

I mean, isn't the point to understand what the word "marriage" refers to? Use of the word doesn't define what it is.

Neither of your quotes indicate there is another marriage in Heaven beside the one between Christ and his bride the church.

If "Whatsoever God doeth..." lasts forever, then there wouldn't a new Heaven and a new Earth in the future would there? Since it's clear in scripture that there will a new Heaven and new Earth, then this particular interpretation that you're resting your argument on must be flawed in some way.

And that is the point. Interpretation. I understand that eternal Marriage is foundational to the LDS teachings, so I understand the motivation. I just disagree with interpreting the Bible in such a way. I'd rather read it all, and understand the message for what it says, not what some prophet said about it.

For example, you have completely ignored Romans 7. Where marriage laws between men and women are only for here on Earth. That's it.

Does the patriarchal style of marriage in which someone pays a bride price and then goes into the tent and consummates the marriage (with no other ceremony) qualify as earthly marriage? Do we get a hint in Gen 2:24?

That's says a lot right there. I wonder how that has worked in the past...

Speaking or reading it all and understanding the message...would you like to read the whole chapter and let us know what Romans 7 is really about? Hint: it's not about marriage. Edited by Flyonthewall

What difference does it make if doctrine contradicts a book that makes mistakes?
