Bsa Battle Update: Corporate Support Driving The Gay Agenda

Wow... so many problems with that "presentation". Can't put our heads in the sand... gotta stay involved in our kids' schools and school districts. I know it's not possible for everyone, but we are lucky enough to have a trusted member of the stake serving on our school board and a lot of parents involved in our school so that we'd quickly shut down anything like this.

True. But, I live in an area with a heavy concentration of religious faithful from a variety of denominations (I'm not in the Mormon Corridor). So, I feel confident in saying that most, if not all, of the principals in my school district know that authorizing something akin to what the article described would be a job-terminating move. And, I feel blessed to live in such an area.

I don't necessarily buy the idea that the people serving on the local Councils are the people out pitching tents and backpacking, etc. That has not been true in any Council on which I served. They tend to pick businessmen with either political clout or financial clout, with a scattering of other Scout Leaders. I am sure that corporate culture is having an impact, but that is because the gays have hit the corporate culture where they are the most sensitive, namely their wallets. It has become less and less fashionable to discriminate against gays. And it is, to me a shame, that BSA is being used as a political/cultural battlefield -- by both sides of the fight. Its like it is a proxy forum slightly outside the political arena for the liberals and the social conservatives to have at each other to the detriment of the Scouts and Scouting program. The sooner it ends, the better.

I agree with you. I also beieve it is difficult for any organization that is not based of religious belief to discriminate against anyone and thrive. That ship has sailed a long time ago. There are very few country clubs, service clubs etc that discriminate against anyone these days. I believe the present compromise to be flawed and still leaves the BSA as a cultural war zone. I preferred the original compromise which would have left each chartered organization to set their own policies. That would have gotten the BSA out of being a battlefield and put the battle back with the various chartered organizations. This is just going to prolong the contention. What is a church which has a lesbian minister suppose to do with a policy that does not allow them to name a lesbian as a den mother? How are gay parents going to react to their son being allowed to be in an organization that they are not allowed to participate in as leaders? This is going to be like throwing gas on a fire.

Just an update. It is Friends of Scouting time and our Bishop who had just met with Elder Perry, brought up the point that the church will remain the largest sponsor of the BSA. The recent activity will not hinder the churches belief that the BSA is a valuable organization that positively affects boys lives.

Why would it. This policy is consistent with existing Church policy, the prior policy compromise would have been as well. The only difference is this one keeps the controversy alive and the former one might have allowed it to die out.
