Popular Post Bill Hamblin Posted March 9, 2013 Popular Post Posted March 9, 2013 Dan P has received anonymous Internet death threats. He has contacted the FBI and police. To the bastards on the bedlam board, enough is enough. Your years of inflammatory rhetoric have paid off. There are many emotionally disturbed individuals who read you board, and your incendiary attacks incite bad behavior. If you don't stop talking about Dan completely and absolutely legal action may be the only recourse. Personally I hope it does go to the lawyers. Legal discovery will be fascinating. 18
Daniel Peterson Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Well, strictly speaking, they haven't actually been death threats. They've been threats that I'll be academically, professionally, financially, and socially "destroyed" by something that this person and his or her alleged associates plan to do. The latest threat, made early this morning, offered a time frame, which none of the previous ones (made over the past year or so) have done. It says that my doom will fall upon me in about three weeks.I finally thought it worth going to the authorities. And yes, as a matter of fact, though I don't (yet) know the identity of the person -- s/he uses an assortment of pseudonyms, but has a very distinct style and certain utterly characteristic themes -- I do know that s/he has posted a number of times (including within the past few days) over on the Contempt and Defamation Board where my Malevolent Stalker and Kishkumen hold forth. There's another fellow who's threatened me with physical violence off and on over the past decade or two. I know exactly who he is, and have twice reported him to the police. (It turns out that I'm not the only person who has done so, and that he's been reported in a number of different jurisdictions.) I think this latest one is a different person.
Damien the Leper Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 (edited) Are we talking about Dr. Shade's board?ETA...nevermind. I read Dan's post. Edited March 9, 2013 by Valentinus
Freedom Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Well, I rarely get death threats but I get legal threats all the time. These are fun because there is no risk of a lunatic, just a fool who supposes that they are the first one to bully a professional with a letter from a lawyer. By the time they realize they were wrong to go there, they will have incurred $4,000 in legal fees. I have one fellow who types his letters and consistently spills coffee on the paper. 1
Popular Post Kerry A. Shirts Posted March 9, 2013 Popular Post Posted March 9, 2013 (edited) Threats of any sort like this are just WRONG. I don't care if I have seen things differently than Dan or someone else, to turn around and threaten is just WRONG. COME ON PEOPLE, ***KNOCK IT OFF*** Good grief, civil discourse and learning from one another even though we don't see eye to eye is the civilized and correct way to carry on conversations, not catty threats and vile invective. I will publically say I am sorry that the idiots are threatening you Dan. Good heavens this is just stupid. Edited March 9, 2013 by Kerry A. Shirts 7

juliann Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I can't say I'm surprised. They have long been a safe house for such things. How many personal destruction email campaigns have they perpetrated now? If they can't win a debate fair and square, they make it up and punk innocent scholars minding their own business. I still remember Tal Bachman emailing a well known university asking if they had ever heard of a graduate. He proudly crowed that the very professors who had taught this scholar didn't even know who he was. Only, poor Tal had punked the wrong department. I had a rather humorous attempt. Emails were sent to two professors because they didn't like me using the sociological literature about apostates. They claimed I was "misrepresenting" the authors of the books I was quoting. But rather than sending these two scholars to the actual discussion, they created a website that I was not even on and paraphrased what I was allegedly saying. Of course, the private emails were published when the scholars fell for it. All I had to do was email the scholars a link to the real discussion so I'm not sure what the point was. ( One of them was Armand Mauss, who was the one who introduced the literature I was using in my CGU class.) They declared victory when I wouldn't publish private emails that assured me I was not misrepresenting a thing (which would be rather difficult since I was quoting them extensively). I challenged them to merely email the profs themselves since they would undoubtedly declare I simply created an email...they, of course, did not. They obviously didn't realize how well I knew Armand.I can't even imagine how humiliating it must have been for the scholar who had nothing to do with any of this, with no particular knowledge of Mormons, to be tricked like that..and then having a sincere email published. I never once saw any recognition of that from them...it was as if they were merely pawns on a game board to be moved around at will and disposed of when no longer useful. I'm sure there are multiple instances of this sort of thing. And I worry that when their stunts don't perpetrate the damage they so eagerly expected, it will result in bigger and badder exploits. 2

Threats are not funny. I'm sorry that Dan felt it was real enough to warrant calling the FBI. That wouldn't be fun.At the same time, do you know it was anyone at the "bedlam" board? Accusing them of making or promoting threats is a big accusation. I won't claim to know them, but my minimal exposure makes me think they are mostly interested in mocking and discrediting.Oh, do I get to call you a ******* on this board if you make me mad? Seems like a double standard. I'd no doubt get banned regardless of the heat of the moment.

Bill Hamblin Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 Please feel free to call me a *******. It would be a refreshingly positive change from what they call us over there.

It would be a refreshingly positive change from what they call us over there.I would never call you or anyone that. While my testimony is weak, I have no enmity for you, Dan or anyone else. I truly appreciate your efforts, even when they don't totally work for me or I flat out disagree with you.
Daniel Peterson Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 (edited) I'm not going to identify the poster here. Anyway, I only know him by pseudonym; he uses several different pseudonyms but is transparently obvious despite the frequent changes. (He actually makes no effort whatever to disguise the fact that it's the same person.)It's not one of the more prominent regular posters over there on the Contempt and Defamation Board (unless it's the sock puppet of one of them, but I have no reason to believe that and don't think it's the case). However, this person has posted there within the past week or less. Edited March 9, 2013 by Daniel Peterson

Remain firm in your reprimanding evil and evil doings but also be gentle and kind to those who show malice towards you. Also thank God for the 2nd Amendment. Keep up the firm and constant mantle of apologist and far more people will be inspired by you than show contempt towards you. Edited March 9, 2013 by Darren10

I don't want to be a graceless third party in this, so I'm walking away from this.Failing all that. I am completely unattached, have independent income, and shoot extremely well.Um Has anyone prayed about this?

Boneheads of the world unite; let's take one last stand for shucking responsibility of any kind for our actions or those of others. If I look in the mirror and see a jerk, it is your fault because you held the mirror up for me to gaze upon. "Bedlam", I love how we put that in quotes to demonstrate contempt for the perceived board of truth and honor. Of course not, they could not at all be responsible for this type of behavior; after all, we are all such calm, intellectual sorts that are only concerned about truth, dignity, and fair play. Sometimes it is just better to spit and walk away. Gads, and these people actually live and breath in such smug, elitist absurdity in the big house. I don't know what boggles me more; the fact they exist or the fact that others are tempted by the drivel they spew forth constantly. Okay, okay, I am walking away, but I am still spitting. 1

Then ask yourself if you know anything about me, whether I support the "bedlam" board or any other board. How is your comment in any way appropriate? In no way do I find it funny or appropriate to threaten or even harass Dan, Bill or the others on this board.I also don't find it appropriate to make very serious accusations without cause. So I simply asked Bill if he had cause for making the accusation. He did, so that is perfectly fine in my book.
