Isaac Luria And Some Spiritual Benefits Of Reading

I once read the Book of Mormon at a rate of 7 chapters a day.

At present, I am reading the Book of Mormon at a rate of 4 verses a day (although sometimes I read a 4-verse passage a few times throughout the day, also).

These differing rates yield differing perspectives. In my case anyway, when I might read, say, a chapter a day, I glean out some importance from the chapter which is fine but which means I "missed" the rest of the chapter. When I have been reading the 4 verses at a time, there is almost always some note I make of an insight from those 4 verses (I always write in a notebook when I'm reading/studying). Also, reading 7 chapters a day gave me more insights of what tied together.

Tacenda, when I started to read scripture, I caused myself to read one verse of the Book of Mormon a day just to be obedient and train my mind and soul for that much spiritual experience (because it was rejecting more). And reading that one verse always made a difference than not reading it. So I encourage you just to begin how you are able, because I had to do that also. And sometimes that's all I can do even now.

My mind connects patterns constantly and sometimes I fear to read the scriptures not because I won't learn anything or something similar but because the informational and symbolic stimulus is too great--I can only stand to experience the complete dawning of the entire key of the universe once a week, so to speak (as opposed to every 10 minutes, ha ha). So I actually struggle a great deal with what to read and how much, because I can't live my life or do anything with the sheer volume of understandings I've received. I'm "scared" of what I *will* learn, not of what I won't! ha ha.

Thank you, I took you up on the advice. As I once again start the BoM(I always quit and get tired of some repetition of wars etc.) It was fun to read in chapter form, I get through a lot faster. But if I read just a couple of pages a night, this could go well. Thanks again!

Just to follow up with my wife's indirect contribution to this thread: I asked her about it, and she said that especially in Alma, she picked up on a lot of "if-then" type teachings and this pattern flows through the book. She said that it got her to think about spiritual things in a certain way. I guess I elaborated on that just a wee bit--instead of literary license, marriage license!

I've started this year with a chapter from OT in the morning, chapter from NT lunchtime/on train home then chapter from BoM/PoGP or D&C in the evening. Working consisitently through a book of OT/NT/BoM. but choosing book I feel led to read, so currently in Job, Philippians and Moses.Finding it a real blessing!

That is an important feature of the art of biblical narrative, so I can see it for the BoM.

Thank you for your great observations--reading scriptures aloud with certain cadence, if/then (a certain cadence in and of itself) etc. I like that we are encouraged to read the scriptures aloud with each other, and sing hymns, etc. Even the set prayers have some significance in this, I suppose.
