Followers of cult leader, Warren Jeffs, who is behind bars for sexually assaulting young girls, are reportedly preparing for the end of the world tomorrow, after their former leader warned of Armageddon before midnight.

The only supermarket and major meeting point of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints community across the movement's key sites - Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah - has been closed, and an expert in the sect has warned CNN the preparations could be a dangerous signal.

Sam Brower, a private investigator who represents more than 100 former FLDS members, said law enforcement officers will monitor the situation in Jeffs' community closely - rather than just dismissing it as another false Armageddon warning from the radical preacher.

'The consensus seems to be that Warren is indicating that by the end of the year, the end of the world will be here', he told CNN.

Alluding to the proclamation's sinister implications, he added: 'Jim Jones, Koresh - history has showed us these things happen when religious zealots take charge of a group of people.'

CNN reporters approached residents to ask them about Jeffs' alleged latest claim but they refused to comment.

I'm skeptical of these reports. Jonestown, Waco and Heaven's Gate all involved very different situations: smaller numbers of people, followers were in isolated circumstances, etc. I think if there was contemplation of mass suicide, we would have heard about it given the sheer number of people involved.

That said, I nonetheless hope nothing tragic takes place.

In the afore mentioned mass suicides, the people were given a little "help " by the leader and his core enforcers. Let's hope there are enough people who will resist such help.

They won't and probably will continue to follow him. The end of the world prophesies pale compared to some of his demands on them. There is a good chance they would want to go to the other side and start their own kingdoms because how they're living currently probably seems like hell.

Let's pray that they don't. I can't imagine living sold out for a faith belief to have something significant cause me to question my devotion, lifestyle, time and efforts. I pray that these precious people may never give up seeking their creator, who loves them greatly and that He might lead their paths straight through this time of confusion for them. I pray that this will be a season of true healing and restoration for these people.

So true, maybe there is hope and it's gotten so bad that something might click! Yes, everyone should be actively praying for them. But since there is freedom of religion, until they start coming out and telling of abuses the law can't do anything. They've been brainwashed to believe the outside world is evil.

....well there is a lot of evil in the world, so they are not incorrect. It's how to navigate the world- be in the world but not of it. Isolating your Church from the world proves to be dangerous too.

In what way are the alleged "false prophets of LDS Academia" prophesying? From your link they are attempting to translate an ancient prophesy, not making any claims themselves about future events.

It's getting so bad. On a trip to a nearby town, I made my husband take me and my two son's to Colorado City. It was like driving in a third world country. You wouldn't believe it unless you saw it. Now that their local store is closed and Warren is telling them what to eat, what not to eat, who can have children and who cannot and only have children with certain people, not with their husbands, it's getting so radical that it might come down to the end of their world for sure. And I'm not talking hypothetically either.

ETA: I wouldn't recommend doing as I did and drive through the town. They will find a reason for their local police to pull you over and come up with all kinds of reasons. The local police are in the FLDS group. It was eery when we went through. They were all attending a meeting in a big building, no doubt listening to Warren over an intercom from prison. There was someone outside of it sitting in a truck. The minute we drove by he appeared to be suspicious. That is when my husband high tailed it out of there.

Is this allowed? i can understand allowing letters that can be read by prison censors to ensure he is not including any instructions such as mass suicide. I don't understand why there would be any communication allowed if there was any remote possible threat of such.

It is unlikely. More likely they are reading his rambling manifestos. Hmmmm.....would it be morally wrong to put a return address for him on an envelope and mail my own manifesto to that church?

We have been receiving Jeff's latest and greatest prophesy's ever 6 months or so. They get sent to our ward meeting house address. I actually enjoy reading them purely for the weirdness factor. They are pretty off base. Each to their own I guess.

ETA: it also comes with a catalogue to purchase other prophesy's and books. So far I have declined their offers.

I read a book about the investigation and it told about him calling from jail and they would meet in the building I mentioned and listen to his rhetoric. They did stop his calls in prison one time but don't know if it was permanent.
