My copy arrived in the mail today!

I'm pissed. I went to pick mine up at Deseret Book and after not knowing what book I was talking about, then telling me it was in the store but not available, they said they'll call me.

Be insistent, Morgan!

The salesclerk gave me all these excuses about having 50 boxes of books and they couldn't find it etc.  And I'm home now.  I'm debating if I should cancel my preorder with DB and try somewhere else.  I'm already not a big fan of DB, but they had a good discount so I took advantage of it.  But I can get just as good of a discount at other places, have it delivered to my house, and not have to deal with disinterested or incompetent salesclerks.

That is too bad. When I was buying mine (which I didn't pre-order, just picked up off the shelf), the sales clerk said it looked like an interesting book, and seemed familiar with Sorenson's work, so we chatted a little about it. For me, it was a good experience.

 

What was odd, to me, was that the book was not on their "New Arrivals" shelf, nor was their anything drawing attention to it to show it was new or anything as it sat on the Book of Mormon books shelf. They just had three copies sitting their, with no fanfare whatsoever. I almost didn't notice it and just about left thinking it wasn't there. I thought it was strange that after all the time it took to finally get it released, and marking it up at such a high price, they almost don't seem interested in selling it.

Dad tells me that he be gifting 35 copies of Mormon's Codex, personally inscribed, to colleagues, friends, and family. One of them is being mailed to his friend Dr. Michael D. Coe.

Why are you airing all this stuff here instead of addressing it to some party who is in a position to do something about it, such as Deseret Book management?

What's the difference between "airing" and "sharing," Scott? I like it (and frequently profit) when others share their buying experiences and/or product reviews. Besides, I've found that more often than not (with some exceptions, of course) management won't do much to fix bad shopping experiences or their own poor marketing practices.

Besides, I've found that more often than not (with some exceptions, of course) management won't do much to fix bad shopping experiences or their own poor marketing practices.

I am going to go check out the display or non display today and will kill two birds with one stone and check out how Brian Hales book is displayed. And buy some g's! I'll report if that's ok cursor.

I thought we were in sharing mode about our experiences getting the book. So I shared mine, and yes, a little venting too. ;)   I had seen other comments about the lack of enthusiasm for advertising and marketing from DB so I thought my experience might would interest some. 

 

For those keeping score, after being on hold for a good while (and realizing I should have taken care of this in the store), and after finding out my name was spelled wrong in their system,  the manager told me she will research the fastest way for me to get my book and get back to me.

Mormon Codex wasn't on display at my DB and I asked why not and the clerk mentioned that since conference was coming up they were promoting other stuff. BTW, you can't buy Brian Hales book in the store, darn. I was told it was a special order book.

Picked up a copy on display at the Jordan Landing DB. Took my two daughters to dance and sat and read the first few chapters while I waited for the dancing daughters (no Lamanite festivals involved). Great stuff. I just love Sorenson's observations, like his note (almost in passing) that the Jaredite record is striking in its absence of priestly elements (Chap. 3). This in contrast to the Nephites who in my opinion were very priestly.

And kudos to Cursor for the great maps!

When someone has a problem with my service, I am annoyed -- and regard it as an act of hostility -- when that person goes to my superior with complaints without first approaching me to see if we can resolve the problem together.

 

Going public with one's ill feelings toward a business or a shop without first approaching the management of said business or shop strikes me as analogous to the above.

 

That's the only reason I raise the point.

If by public you mean a small, extremely limited community of Mormonism nerds who are following a discussion of a publication of a book explaining one subset of geography theories. I understand the sentiment, Scott, but I think this is more akin to venting to a cliquey bunch of friends off to the side at a hangout at someone's house than shouting it from, well, even one's Facebook wall.

Also, if anyone with their copy could post a picture of the spine, that'd be cool. I'm interested in the design, thickness, etc. And I'm too impatient to wait for my own copy to arrive :)

In this instance, by "public," I mean an Internet website accessible to virtually anyone and potentially viewable by a global audience numbering in the millions.
