This video is titled "Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus".

I was greatly impressed with the poetic expression of an individual faith.

My question on this subject is there a false dichotomy in separating Jesus from religion or specifically from Christianity?

Funny you should post this tonight, Valentinus. I just started listening to Peter Rollin's Insurrection while I was at the gym this evening. I think this counter-culture Christian movement is a fascinating reaction to fundamentalism. From a historical standpoint, I am excited to see if or how this movement shapes modern American Protestantism. (Of course, Rollins isn't American but he has been influential with some American pastors.)

So if He was religious, then should we not follow His example by obeying the laws and ordinances that He has set in place as part of the religion that He founded?

Simply put, Jesus didn't hate religion. He hates hypocrisy.

I believe this deals with a less than fundamental interpretation of Jesus' religious practices and his thoughts on those practices in a more eternal or transcendant mindset.

When talking to people who imagine contemplation is spirituality I have often wanted to react like this guy:

I saw this last week and had a discussion with my family about it. This fellow misunderstands religion and no doubt does not attend a church. He likely hears the stereo types of christian churches and is just as guilty of mocking them as we accuse evangelicals of mocking us. I have heard the same arguments used against politicians and government in general. There certainly is a lot of hypocrisy in religion but there is a lot more hypocrisy coming from the so-called tolerant atheists. It is not possible to effectively serve others without an organization. Individual efforts are limited in their scope, but when you bring together 3,000 baptist/catholic/muslim/mormon youth together to collect food for the needy you truly see religion in action. Without an organization, how would you bring them together?

Grace versus works. On the one hand this young man seems to project his moral depravity to his fellow church bearers in being addicted to pornography while pretending to do what his church taught him, and in the same breath says we don't have to do anything. He puts words in the mouth of God, and then accuses his church of doing the same. I believe he is a false prophet.

Well, I think he is a very nice looking and very bright young man. I am glad to see some original thought on the subject. I don't think he has it quite right, just yet (who does?), but he's thinking about it and that's good. Nice video, IMO. Nicely put together.

The man has his terminology completely screwed up. He isn't talking about "religion." He's talking about hypocrisy, as has been said already in this thread.

James defines "religion" thusly:

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."
