Rain Posted February 1 Posted February 1 My husband and I watched The Midnight Sky last night. I didn't know anything about it except the written blurb and thought it might be like a few other shows I've seen so I said, "sure" when my husband suggested it. I wasn't bored during it, but it is slow. If you want a pick me up or hopeful movie don't watch it. 3

I’ve wondered about that movie for a while but never watched because the story sounded a little off to me. Hearing your review I can now pass without wondering anymore if I’m missing something 1
Tacenda Posted February 5 Posted February 5 This movie might not be national, but for those in Utah, it's a good one. It's called, "Standout, The Ben Kjar Story". Turns out he's from my hometown and went to my high school and junior high. I didn't know that going in. Well worth the time to see, I was emotional all the way through. It was directed by T.C. Christensen, a local cinematographer, writer and director. Here's the description on Cinemark: The inspiring story of Ben Kjar, born with Crouzon Syndrome, a rare craniofacial disorder. From birth, doctors warned that his life would be dominated by limitations, bullying and harsh scrutiny. Despite that prognosis, Ben yearned for an ordinary life free from judgment and harassment. But as unexpected challenges arose and ridicule resurfaced, Ben found himself at a defining crossroads: fade into the background of a "normal" life, or fully embrace his difference and boldly stand out. 3
Amulek Posted February 18 Posted February 18 My wife wanted to watch a rom-com the other night, but I was leaning toward sci-fi. So, we compromised and watched Groundhog Day. Granted, the romance isn't super deep, and the comedy is very much on the sarcastic side - which isn't for everybody - and it only 'technically' involves time travel. Still, I have fond memories of going to see this in the theater when I was a teenager, and I still very much enjoy it even after all these years. (Don't drive angry!) 3

This is a movie I have fond memories myself. I have been trying to catch-up on the films of yesteryear. This is one of those movies that I want to revisit. Great movie, one of Bill Murrays best. 3
Tacenda Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Recently I saw a super good rom-com called, "Solo Mio" with Kevin James, and the star that was in "The Chosen", Jonathon Roumie. Great movie, for the scenery, for the actors and the feel good and nothing in it to make me wince. Also, the famous singer Andrea Bocelli was in it, and maybe even his home in Tuscany, Italy. 4
Tony uk Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Just watched a 2002 made for TV adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes story, Hound of the Baskervilles. Richard E Grant is in one of the supporting roles. I missed this when it first aired on TV. Managed to catch it this time around, and found it to be quite good adaption. 2

I miss just going to the movies and being entertained, and leaving feeling happy. Go see solo mio. Clean, sweet, and feel good. And done well. 3

The plague hit my family this weekend so lots of movie watching. Are you There God? It's Me, Margaret was really good. I loved the book as a kid and was really happy with the way they did the movie and the actors they chose. Also finally watched Rental Family with Brenden Fraser and loved it. 4
Tony uk Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Just catching up on the Kevin Costner Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Part of my Back to the Past revisit. Looks slightly dated now, some may say that the story is set a few centuries ago, so it would look dated 😁. It is still good fun to watch I think. 3

It was one of the first VHS that I ever owned. I haven't seen it in ages though. 2

bluebell Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Watched the 2025 Anaconda movie with hubby and the littles last night. It's the one with Jack Black and Paul Rudd and some other well known actors. It was pretty entertaining and some parts will make you laugh out loud. It was also fun because it had some cameos from a couple actors from the 1990s movie (which was not a comedy). It's silly but fun, and you can rent it for $5.99 on amazon prime so a good deal. It's rated pg-13 and had the obligatory F word and lots of SH words but refreshingly there was zero sex or nudity and zero sexual or crude humor (other than maybe one scene that involves one of the friends having to pee on another friend because of a spider bite, some would probably find that crude). 3

Anaconda is one film, of both versions. That I've not seen yet, hopefully in the future I'll be able to watch in the future. 2
Rain Posted March 20 Posted March 20 We saw Solo Mio last week. Loved it! My husband loved it too. Definitely worth seeing. Thanks for the suggestion @MustardSeed 3
Rain Posted March 22 Posted March 22 We watched Project Hail Mary and thought it was a good movie with heart. We, especially my engineer husband, thought there were a few explanations that didn't quite make sense, but they didn't stop us from enjoying the movie. We wondered if that was a movie script problem or a problem in the book as well. I really wish that there was more of Carl in the movie as I loved what happened between him and Grace, but honestly, I'm not sure how you could do much more of that given the plot. 4

I loved the book and am excited to see the movie. What issues did your hubby have? Maybe I can remember if they were covered in the book or not (it's been a few years since I've read it so no promises). 1

POSSIBLE SPOILERS POSIBLLE SPOILERS It had something to do with why they had to drop down to collect the bacteria to get more since they already had some and growing more since the best place to grow it would be in the dot stream. We both thought maybe the book explained that better. Edited March 22 by Rain 1

Stargazer Posted April 4 Posted April 4 (edited) Finally got around to watching "Greyhound" the other day. If you're unfamiliar, it is a "2020 American war film directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay. The film is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester, and follows a US Navy commander on his first assignment commanding a multi-national escort destroyer group of four, defending an Allied convoy from U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic." Text from Wikipedia. I really enjoyed the film. It was supposed to have had a theatrical release in 2020, but due to Covid and all the disruptions the theatrical release was cancelled and it was released digitally. It was Oscar-nominated for "Best Sound." Edited Monday at 03:23 PM by Stargazer 2

We both thought maybe the book explained that better. The kids and I saw the movie last night so I better understand what part in the story you were talking about. (Excellent movie by the way!). The book is incredibly science-dense. The movie has much much less science in it, though it does follow the basic same story that the book does. In the book, there are no astrophage predators in the petrova line. All the sample from the petrova line tells rocky and grace is that there is a lot of life on Adrian, and that something is keeping the astrophage numbers even. They guess that it's a predator of some kind (bacteria or amoeba or whatever) but they have no proof of it. They try to collect enough samples to find the specific organism they need but can't find any in the line or the upper atmosphere of the planet and decide that the predator must life in or on the planet. They use a bunch of science to figure out where the astrophage are breeding in the atmosphere and deduce that the predators must be there as well. That's why they have to drop the chain to get the sample. In the book they have to drop the chain much farther down than in the movie. 3

He had read the book, and we both really enjoyed the movie. I too, was perplexed at some of the science (e.g., how a vastly advanced alien species would have no concept of relativity), but my son assured me they gave explanations for everything in the book. I'm not certain if I would have found those explanations satisfactory, but hey - there's plenty of stuff in science fiction that breaks down / doesn't always make complete sense, so I try not to get too hung up on it. All-in-all I would give the move a solid 👎 1
