Hoops22 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I'm hoping that if I keep this thread going my call for references will honored.
Ron Beron Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 You haven't read the whole thread, have you? I'm working on it, I'm working on it! I know I'm being a bit serious and that there is a lot of tongue-in-cheek quips being made, but what the heck.
Bernard Gui Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 For a different view of modesty, may I recommend"A Return to Modesty:Discovering the Lost Virtue" by Wendy Shalit. It is an excellent retelling of the orthodox Jewish modestylaws. http://www.cnn.com/books/beginnings/9903/r...esty/index.html"The mindset that concerns me is not political but cultural. Anyone who's been through the mill of my generation's sex education has trouble understanding why I'm concerned about the things I'm concerned with -- indeed, to have my kind of concerns, I'm told, is "unhealthy" -- and I for my part cannot understand how they can be so unconcerned, so cavalier. When I hear the words that they use, "hang-ups," "hook-ups," "check-ups," for example, it's as if we lived in different worlds." I'm curious why only the men are advised to "grow up" when they are aroundimmodestly dressed women. What is grown up about immodesty? Could notthe ladies do with some "growing up" too? It's also baffling how one can govirtually naked at a place where there's some water, but would be mortified to wearthe same garb in a school cafeteria. I'm also amused when people bring up Europeanpractices as some sort of virtue paradise because the girls can go topless and themen could care less. Ladies, you've been sold a bill of goods. Many women, includingmy daughter, who have spent any time in Europe complain about the constant groping, ogling, cat-callls, and invitations they endure in public places. In one hostel, some guy thought it was ok to hop in the shower with her travel partner. He changed his mind as he staggered off with a black eye. European guys don't give a fig about ogling....hogwash.Modesty is a virtue that has mostly been lost. Hurrah for those who miss it.Bernard
Zoidberg Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I'm hoping that if I keep this thread going my call for references will honored. If by references you mean me reporting you to the mods for soliciting people to post semi-pornographic imagery, then perhaps.

I feel like I should admonished them to pull them up. Along with the guys who wear their undies ten inches above the top part of their pants. I remember a comedian calling his son, "Droop Dog" because he wore his clothes too low. I took a lot of pictures of my son when he was a teenager because I knew someday I could blackmail him into taking good care of me in my old age.
Hoops22 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 If by references you mean me reporting you to the mods for soliciting people to post semi-pornographic imagery, then perhaps. Just trying to get a clear picture of what we're talking about.
structurecop Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 If by references you mean me reporting you to the mods for soliciting people to post semi-pornographic imagery, then perhaps. Ah yes, the horrors of semi-porn...
Zoidberg Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Along with the guys who wear their undies ten inches above the top part of their pants. IDon't worry, that trend is dead. They're wearing girls' pants now.
Mighty Curelom Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Don't worry, that trend is dead. They're wearing girls' pants now.Not so much. Manufacturers have started producing slimmer men's jeans to keep up with the kids. You can now find men's jeans that fit like a second skin, if you were so inclined.Pants aficionado,MC

Although in reality I respect the whole emo movement and the new androgynous style very much. Yay skinny jeans and eye shadows for everybody!
myleague Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Move to Alaska... You might seem women in bikinis, but you'd wish you hadn't!
katherine the great Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I"m a little late seeing this thread. I can't remember ever going to a community swimming pool without seeing women and girls wearing bikinis. I'm not a guy, but I don't see too many "deer in the headlights" looking guys wandering around at public swimming pools. I practically grew up on the beach, so I'm surprised that anyone would be surprised at seeing a bikini at a swimming pool. I seriously think it would do us good to spend some time in a nudist colony. The only reason for such a strong reaction is that we don't usually see bikinis at church functions, but this is America and skin is all around us!(I do think that bikinis are not appropriate attire for LDS women, but I don't think that she is responsible for your reaction. She was naked and was not ashamed!)Not so much. Manufacturers have started producing slimmer men's jeans to keep up with the kids. Arlon James Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I don't know where this thread belongs but I usually post here so I put it here.I just moved into a townhome that has a community swimming pool. I went the other day, and in walked one of the most attractive twenty somethings in my area wearing a bright green string bikini. She also happens to be in my ward. She then walked over to say hi. I'm at that point having a hard time remembering what she is saying, and trying to keep eye contact. She's says bye and I'm trying to look at my book and not watch her walk away (which I failed to do). Now, I fought internally any recall of the event until now and refused to ruminate on any image that may want to resurface. It is a struggle to maintain chaste within my own mind within the course of a normal day, without some girl prancing around me 98% naked. My question is does these young women bear any responsibility? Also, will this primal reaction ever go away for us men.(im assuming I'm not the only one).I feel you pain there Brother. I should point out however, that if you were to survey the majority of pools and beaches around the world, most would be topless as well ................
Zakuska Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Oh come on Structure Cop! Thats nothing... Try this Sports Illistrated.Turkish Muslim women promote `neck-to-ankle swimwear http://news.sawf.org/Fashion/16415.aspxOooh La La!***Warning: Not for the faint of heart***

Even if the bishop's wife is wearing a one-piece, if she's hot, she's going to get looks. Just enjoy the beauty, who cares. Acknowledge it for what it is,,,,beauty. The problem comes when we take it to the level of lust. Appreciating beauty is not lust. The 3 second rule is a pretty good one. Look and appreciate, then you're done. If you keep looking or staring,,,,well there ya go. Here's a question for you. You mentioned you couldn't help but watch her as she walked away, which I don't blame you, I would have looked too. It's normal. But if this hot girl had been in a "modest" one-piece, would you really not have looked as she walked away? Oh come on, admit it. We all would. Hot is hot, no matter what they wear.
Lamanite Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 But I'll bet you didn't offer her your shirt or a towel? And I also suspect that thoughts stray that way even when someone is wearing a perfectly modest swimming suit. And for that matter, a beautiful and modest dress.I disagree. This is demonstrably untrue in my case.
Lamanite Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 Any chance your ward will be having a Mormon/Evangelical swimming party? And will you invite me?Sure. We are having a bbq on friday. Good chance there will be at least a lot of leg and tight form fitting clothing to be had by all!
Olavarria Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Based on the situation between the drunk/naked Noah and Ham, I think wearing a bikini is not nearly as bad as leering at someone in a bikini. That is why girls should avoid wearing bikinis, to avoid the bikini is to help out a brother keep his thoughts clean and stay happy. Wanting what I cant get does not make me happy. Young girls are really nieve about what guys think. They think wearing a bikini is "cute". We think its....... Modesty is an act of charity
Lamanite Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 Guys don't realize that women dress more for themselves and other women than they do for men. I choose what I wear based on what I like. I don't wear skimpy clothes because I don't like them, not because of what some guy may or may not think. I may wear a skirt a couple of inches above my knees or a sleeveless shirt, (which is as skimpy as I wear) it's because I think I look nice and if there's some uptight person around who doesn't like it he/she can look away.I'm sure this 'sister' didn't choose her swimsuit with you in mind. Stop flattering yourself. I don't know I'm pretty fine.
Lamanite Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 Dont worry about it. My blood is about as red as it gets, women will nearly always get my attention. And vice versa, especially when I get around in my mankini. (I get told that i am a 8/10, but the mankini pushes me up to 10/10)If your a real man, its good genes which make you attracted to females, its a big + because it means you will be able to spread your dna around a bit one day (only if women find you attractive). I would be much more concerned with someone who says there have a disinterest in women dressed this way. As for women making themselves look attractive, yes the should take responsibility for what they wear. No one in their right mind would go around in a string bikini for food shopping (except that other post from vegas) so from a birka to bikini where is the line to draw of what is and is not appropriate, its very grey. Some clothes are designed to keep the cold from killing you, others are to draw attention. If they dress like that they are doing it for a very good reason, to show males their potential breeding advantages and mens nature is to respond. If women dont want men to look at them then they will have to spend more time at home (or eat 5000 hot dogs) because this is nature at its most basic. I think the thing we all fear in any walk of life from dress codes to religion is extremists. There will always be a fringe element who will not align themselves with good taste and our ideals. Being attracted to chicks is not one of them. now where did I put my black mankini, I have to be at a job interview in 20 minutes.Well said!

I love women and love the physical aesthetics of the female figure. I just wish both sexes would recognize our differences and help each other out a little bit by dressing a little more modestly for women and praying for less testosterone for men.
Nofear Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Guys don't realize that women dress more for themselves and other women than they do for men. I choose what I wear based on what I like. My wife says/said the same thing. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely persuaded as Ovulating Women Dress to Impress. Note that the article doesn't say they dress more immodestly, but that greater care and attention is given. The nicer jewelry and make-up come out during ovulation.I love women and love the physical aesthetics of the female figure. I just wish both sexes would recognize our differences and help each other out a little bit by dressing a little more modestly for women and praying for less testosterone for men. God gave us hormones so we would procreate. Heck, without 'em we'd have far, far fewer babies in this world.Chastity isn't about not-being-attracted to the opposite sex (we are by design). It's about sticking with utter fidelity to your partner -- in large part for the children. Modesty is a social/cultural standard designed to maintain chastity so that stable, productive, effective families can result.
myleague Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Just wanted to shoot a hole in that 5000 hot dog theory.http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/02/wing.woman.ap/index.html

True, but I think what caught you off guard was that she was LDS, right? If she was just a neighbor, would this thread exist? So I know we hold eachother to a higher standard, but shouldn't we men be ready for any hot chick? LDS or not?At least you didn't do what some men do, and automatically assume that because "she's hot and talking to me, she must like me or something, especially if she came over and talked to me in a bikini". Men are pigs and many would think that's a come-on. Sheez.Singing a hymn never worked for me. My best tool is to change the paradigm in my mind. No matter how good she looks, she's somebody's daughter, sister, and maybe mother. It seems to take the lust out of it for me.
