Tony uk Posted January 18 Posted January 18 This maybe a slightly random topic, thought I would give it a try. I was thinking, one for the future some time. I would like to visit Salt Lake City, and possibly Utah in general. Is it easy enough type of place to visit for a first time visitor to the USA to navigate around the city. I have never visited America before, so I would like any potential visit to be of benefit to myself. As stress free as possible, if travel can be stress free. 1
rodheadlee Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Well I've been a visitor to Utah quite a few times and I think it's a stress-free easy place. Things could have changed though since the last time I was there. 1
Calm Posted January 18 Posted January 18 (edited) You can ride around much of SLC for free, including Temple Square. OTOH, I have no clue about how difficult the city is otherwise for a tourist as I avoid SL County as much as possible because I hate the freeway system. It is great at 3 AM though. I used to drive my daughter to treatment at a UofU medical clinic at that time, we would be leaving SL around 7 AM and even then it was a bit nervewracking, going the other way would have had me ill most likely (never been the driver in an accident I have been in and plan on never being one). Much of the city is on a grid system with streets numbered rather than named. I remember it being pretty easy to find things back when it was quiet enough I was willing to drive to stores, etc when necessary (back in the 70s and 80s). Went to the zoo quite a bit. https://www.rideuta.com/Fares-And-Passes/Free-Fare-Zone Edited January 18 by Calm 1

Getting around SLC and the valley is fairly simple, especially if you just do Uber and let them drive you where you want to go. You can download the app on your phone and then schedule them to pick you up wherever you are whenever you want. Then you can just sit back and let them deal with the horrible Utah traffic (because it can be really horrible, and the drivers can be aggressive and unfriendly. Some of them would rather let you die in a fiery crash than let you merge. But if you are wanting to see other parts of Utah (like the southern part), then you'll want to rent a car. I highly suggest doing that because southern Utah is amazing! But it's probably 4-5 hours from the airport to get to someplace like Zions or Moab so you'll want to have quite a few days to be able to do the trip justice. We can help you pick a route if you are interested in red rock adventures. But if you are more interested in basic church history stuff then northern Utah would be a great place (and it has a lot of natural beauty too if you know where to look). Depending on what part of the state you are interested in, you'd want to come at different times of the year, as well. 3
rpn Posted January 19 Posted January 19 SLC is laid out in actual squares and so labelled. It's probably the easiest city in the world to maneuver around in. It is also a very big place (and the US is much much bigger than any Brit can even imagine ---- at least that is what my several exchange students have said when they travelled with the US as part of their exploration). Amtrak is a great way to get around the US for sure, but it will take three days to get from NY or Atlanta airports to SLC by train. 1

And there are more rules. People from Europe need to have a ESTA and also by the imigrations of the airport need to explain why you wanna visit the place and sometimes give the phone to check and give the adres of the place you go to for the stay. fingerprints, and show to the imigrations that you have enough money, and also important how lang you wanna stay in the country. etc. So... that by itself is not really stressfree unfortunately. I also would love to visit Salt Lake City though. I think it's such a beautiful city. And they have this really big huge temple that just.......takes your breath away i imagine. I'm a saint so i just wanna go to the rots of the LDS church. And that's in Salt Lake City. But for now there are just to many bumbs in the road. I also need a credit card (which i also don't have) only a debit card. And my bank doesn't wanna give me a credit card. Edited January 21 by Dario_M
sunstoned Posted January 31 Posted January 31 The public transit in SLC is not as extensive as in eastern cities, but it is getting pretty good. I tend to use Frontrunner (commuter rail system) when I visit SLC. It has many stops, with most being lost to a connection point with TRAX (light rail system). 1
