rodheadlee Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Somebody dumped these kittens off at the landfill. We've had them now for about 8 weeks. They were feral but we have them humanized now. We can't keep them so I'm looking for a home for them. Sophie is the little girl and she needs to go with one of her brothers because she is very timid. Sarge is a good kitten he is very affectionate and has nice soft fur. Raul needs a family with kids because he is super affectionate and demands attention. I will post pictures later. They are very small because their mother was malnourished. 4
Pyreaux Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 What city and state are these kittens living at rodheadlee?
rodheadlee Posted September 5, 2023 Author Posted September 5, 2023 (edited) Redlands, California. We're willing to travel up to 100 miles for a good home. I commute to Eureka California every two weeks. Which is 700 miles north of Redlands. Edited September 5, 2023 by rodheadlee 2
Pyreaux Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Little far from Louisiana. You going to post this stuff on Craigslist too? 1
bluebell Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 I’d take one if we were closer. Try posting them on Facebook marketplace. Just make sure you charge a $1 on the ad for them because for some reason giving pets away for free violates their marketplace rules.

The idea is that if people won't/can't pay for them they often don't have the money to feed them or give them medical care. For others it may cut down on those who want to be violent with them. When we were trying to give away a cat who was abandoned with me animal groups I had been talking to suggested I charge enough to discourage people who wouldn't care for him in some way. 2

That is a good idea. I remember when filling up a room full of baby chicks was a big thing at BYU at Easter time, but few arranged what to do with them afterwards. I thought a service that not only delivered the chicks but picked them up in a few days (or less if needed) that actually raised chickens anyway made for a good business model. Baby bunnies were (are?) a big seller at Easter too, but lots of people don’t understand the bunnies need substantial care and might not be as friendly when older if they don’t work at it. Rather than do that though, I prefer just to try to vet people, even though it’s can be more difficult. 2
rodheadlee Posted September 5, 2023 Author Posted September 5, 2023 Those are all good ideas. I'm down in Mexico de storming the boat. No damage but my neighbor wrapped her up tight. Thankfully. I've got to leave her in better shape to handle weather. I'll post on Craigslist when we get back. 4

I've got to leave her in better shape to handle weather. [boat tangent] I can remember as a kid helping my dad tie up his sailboat in anticipation of incoming hurricanes. We'd use really long mooring lines, criss-crossing the boat such that the port stern line went to the starboard forward mooring cleat on the dock (or piling as the case may be), and so forth for all four quadrants of the boat. The idea was to have a LOT of rise-and-fall leeway without having too much slack in the lines, so that the boat could ride out the storm surge but still not smash into anything due to wind and wave action. He had special heavy-duty hurricane mooring lines in his boat locker reserved for this purpose, and they were not cheap. For decades my dad followed this protocol whenever a hurricane was threatening, which was often several times a year, and in September of 2005 it paid off bigtime. My dad's boat was unharmed by Katrina, despite its location (on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans). He had fled the city and assumed his boat had been destroyed, as the overhead shots of the marina looked like it had been bombed, but looking closely I could make out his boat sitting centered in its slip in the after-storm aerial photographs! It sustained ZERO damage. As for the marina clubhouse and the coast guard lighthouse station, the concrete slabs were all that survived. Before he passed away my dad gave his boat to the Sea Scouts, hurricane lines included. Hopefully they know how to tie up a boat for a hurricane, because I doubt Katrina will be the last one. I did list him with a cost both on facebook and through a shelter, but in the end I gave him away to someone I never met. My husband and I were at the neighborhood park when a man came walking his dog. I don't know why I did it, but I called out "do you want a cat too?" He immediately stopped, told me he didn't want one, but his recently widowed neighbor did. After a couple of months of texting back and forth with him and he and his girls coming to meet the cat, he finally brought the neighbor over while I was out of the country. My son said the cat instantly warmed up to her and she took him home. We had warned them that the cat took quite awhile to warm up to us (1 month for my son and husband, 4 months for me), but the man told us the cat felt at home pretty quickly. Maybe I'm naive, but things just felt right. 3

I just had to rehome our 8 month old dog that we adopted two weeks ago because the people we got her from lied to us and told us she was housebroken when she is not housebroken. Not at all. We travel a lot and needed to be able to take the dog with us and it just wasn’t possible. Sometimes she would pee in the car on 20 minute trips. So I’ve been working to rehome her and was able to find her home today, but I still worry. I texted the family for days and told them everything so that they would be able to make an informed choice on her. But even though we only had her a couple weeks, I still feel invested and responsible for her happiness. I really hope her new family is a perfect one for her. But you just never know. 2

Please don't post on Craigslist. People who own snakes or birds of prey buy kittens from Craigslist because they're cheap, there's no paper trail and it makes it easier for them to buy live animals to feed their exotic pets.
Tacenda Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 (edited) Definitely a rescue/rehoming site on FB or something. And that is a good idea to charge a rehome fee and maybe just say free later on when they say they want the pet. That way you attract someone that isn't going to abuse them or heaven forbid something else. Edited September 5, 2023 by Tacenda

So sorry about that. We ended up having the cat for 5 months. I think we might have been the 3rd family to have him; it was so hard for him in the beginning. I made sure to tell the man everything about the cat so he would be informed because I didn't want him going to a 5th home - I definitely loved the cat. He at first wanted to give the cat as a surprise, but I told him that I wasn't comfortable with that. I wanted to know if the widow really wanted him. He had also shared with me how they help the widow so I knew she wouldn't be alone in this new adventure. For those wondering why we didn't take him - the owner lost his house in a hurricane. He traveled cross country to stay with friends who were allergic. At first he visited and then just disappeared and wouldn't contact us. I never wanted a cat, but I enjoy caring for them when people go on vacation. So after texting one more time that I would be giving him away if the owner didn't reply I started to find a new home for him. Sadly, because it was such a stress for me I won't be helping people like that again. Edited September 5, 2023 by Rain 2

Raul needs a family with kids because he is super affectionate and demands attention. Do you know any primary-age kids? We needed to find homes for five kittens, and enlisted the help of my daughter-in-law's kids (daughter-in-law is unfortunately allergic to cats but the kids love them). They found homes for three of the kittens among their friends from church within about two weeks, and the fourth went to a friend-of-their-family widow whose elderly cat had recently passed away. My wife fell in love with the fifth one, which is what I was hoping for all along, but it had to be her idea. So our cat-count went up from five to six, despite her saying for months previously that five cats was too many (which is why it had to be her idea). Before enlisting the help of the grandkids we posted ads on a neighborhood website or two, asking $25 each for the kittens, and got no interest. Also struck out with pet adoption centers. The grandkids told their friends to tell their parents the price was $25 each, but we actually did not end up charging anybody anything; instead we gave away enough cat food and cat litter and cat toys to get them all started. We get e-mails with updated photos of the kittens every few weeks, so we think it worked out pretty well. Dude get the Mormons on your side, they get stuff done!! Edited September 5, 2023 by manol 2
