strappinglad Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 I have friend who, if the right 237 people were to suddenly die, would be next in line for the British throne. BTW, I need someone to carefully explain what an " 8 th cousin 6 times removed means. seriously ! 2
Navidad Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 (edited) Well, I am not a member of the church, but I am a 13th cousin of Elder Bednar and I have four direct ancestors who made the trek west. If I become president, there are going to be some changes! Ha! 😀 I am going to re-institute foot washing in the Sacrament service! Edited December 25, 2021 by Navidad 4

He was born in Essex in England, she in Warwick, and they married in Hartford, Connecticut around 1644. It's possible you and are distant cousins, bro! If we were in the same room and brought up the FamilySearch app it could tell us if we were related.

Being “once removed” means being one generation down. So your cousin’s children are your first cousins, once removed. Your children and your cousin’s children would be second cousins. Third cousins add a generation down. So your cousin’s grandchildren are your first cousins, twice removed. 1

Looks like mine are William Strode (1504-1579) and Elizabeth Courtenay (1502-1581). Mix of paternal and maternal relationships. That far back though things are messy.

Unless he had children before he died and that line survived in which case you probably still are but are also his many-times great grandchild. 1

He said the interconnected social, ecclesiastical, and business relationships in the church amounted to a system somewhere between an old boys’ network and the British royal family. This is something they don't even try to hide. Matt Holland is the latest example of open Nepotism. 1
sunstoned Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 7 hours ago, The Nehor said: “Directly related”? What does that even mean? And it is not nepotism. Nepotism originally came into vogue as a word describing appointing nephews to important posts (usually Catholic ones). Nepotism is giving those offices to your kids and nephews and grandkids. Having someone who is the great or great-great grandson of a former apostle called to the office isn’t nepotism unless great grandpappy is still around and made it happen. You can throw nepotism accusations against a few people. Joseph F. Smith was very worried about it when Joseph Fielding Smith was called to the apostleship. President Hinckley made it a point to ‘recuse’ himself when his son was considered for a call to the Seventy and jokingly commented something about how he can say the candidate has a good mother. If I were called as an apostle tomorrow you could credibly throw that accusation at me due to being related to a few apostles but no one but only a genealogist would consider us related at all. It is a strained assertion. It would be more credible to claim that too many of the apostles grew up in Utah and the surrounding states because that had more impact on becoming an apostle than marrying the second cousin twice removed of a previous apostle. Did you read the link? You have no solid ground here at all. They are all related, and it is not just great-great whoever. Sons of Q15 are being called to be GAs or college presidents. Joseph F. Smith called his son to be a GA who later became the prophet. He then called his son-in-law to be a GA. BY and WW did the same. Mormon royalty is still very much alive and well.

Sons of apostles being Mission Presidents and college presidents is not what I am talking about. I am talking about apostolic nepotism and Joseph F. Smith is pretty much the last time it could be argued it happened. I have plenty of solid ground. The tenuous links that are argued to suggest that the apostles are a big happy inbred family is a joke. The links are way too distant to argue for. Who sits around thinking that they have to get their second and third cousins a nice high position as an apostle once they get in? 1

JustAnAustralian Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 It's Utah, there's a good chance that most non-recent-move-ins in the church are related to eachother.

A lot of it doesn’t even involve the apostles and seventies themselves though it sometimes does. I just don’t think it extends to picking apostles or seventies we would see a lot more sons and nephews and grandkids of current apostles becoming apostles and seventies. You don't call people you don't know to a position Yes there is inspiration but it doesn't amount to roaming through India to find someone pictured in a vision, when a guy you grew up with could do just as well 1

I checked FamilySearch and it says for both of these people that "You have no direct relationship to this person in Family Tree, or your common ancestor is beyond 15 generations." So, though you and I are cousins (just because we all are), it can't be quantified at this time. Oh, well.

When you spend a lot of your life traveling the world meeting people and having people coming to you for meetings you have options. A lot of them. The shift to having more representation from other nations is probably driven by two things. 1. Many areas no longer need everyone competent to lead locally to be leading locally. 2. The big increase in traveling and communication has put those local leaders in touch with leading authorities more regularly. Admittedly that would not help everyone know a lot of people. If I was a Seventy traveling I would forget everyone I met in the stake I visited last week but remember the squirrel I saw on the way to the building in vivid detail. Some memories are amazing. President Monson had an amazing memory and I have it on good authority that President Hinckley was roughly his equal in that area. The person who told me this said he would show up for a meeting and find them talking about the genealogies of people they last saw at a meeting twenty years or more ago.

Now that you mention it - when my wife and I got home from grocery shopping the other day, there was a rather large man with long stringy hair, beard, and a leather jacket in our front yard. From what I could see he had "OPR" embroidered on the front of his coat. We don't have many homeless folk here in Mexico. By the time I parked and came around to the front he had disappeared! I didn't think much of it at the time, but I am wondering now if he could have disappeared shortly after you "called off" the Danites? I guess we will never know? OPR? Interesting initials. Wait a minute . . . no . . . it couldn't be? Take care!
