Sometimes I think listening to Rush Limbaugh will make me angry, but it hasn't worked yet.  Paul Harvey isn't around anymore to tell me the rest of the story and that doesn't make me angry either.  My anger management system must be working well.

I dial up my wife and ask for the patience prayers. 

The interview of Rick Scott set me off. Does anyone know what kind of climate mitigation we are getting for 3.5 trillion dollars? Modern nuclear power plants? Orbital solar collectors ? Earthbound solar Farms? Wind generator Farms? Or is the money going to disappear into the bureaucratic bottomless pit?

Government programs are all about providing jobs with an income so that the people who receive that income can spend that money which supposedly either tickles or floods into other people's bank accounts or back to the government as taxes.

The government is very efficient at making money and and spending money and giving people jobs with money so that whoever gets the money can energize the economy.  It's not about who gets the money.  It's about money production and circulation.

Example:  Some people got angry in the past about the government spending several hundred dollars for a hammer that cost about $30 at Home Depot. But the government was just giving the hammer supplier more money to spend on other things.  To provide more fuel for the economy.  Very generous.  The supplier supposedly spent the money and the economy was more energized by that spending than it would have been by the government paying only $30. Nothing to be angry about.  The government both makes the money and spends it to fuel the economy.  It's a wonderful system.  Most of us would just like to get more of the money the government makes and spends.

Yeah, I give up. I have wind and solar,  I'm doing my part. 

P.S. none of it is circulating my direction. I got cheated out of half of my Social security.

Great.  Just great. I just now found out that he is dead.  There went my future opportunities to see if listening to him would make me angry.  Unless maybe I hear him in or from the spirit world. I wonder if seances would make me angry.

Metis...I am afraid I cannot tell you that I have read "What Men Live By". Nor did I know of Tolstoy's popularity through the darkest years in Russia. But I appreciate the recommendation of this short story, and I am delighted to have a new reading assignment.   

Just for the record, I hold that Leo Tolstoy is among the greatest story tellers in history. I have read War and Peace at least three times, and I love it more each time. But I see a flawed Tolstoy in each of his flawed major characters, thrashing around like the author of Ecclesiastes to find satisfaction in this life. It is to his credit that he sees the flaws and dissatisfaction. As I say, I love his writing, but the historical determinism he espouses throughout War and Peace is quite compatible, and indeed a foundational component, in my opinion, to Marxist historical theory. I gather that unlike contemporaries like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy was pretty much always on the move philosophically, and never completely put down roots. Strong assertions I know. Just my opinion of course, but I think that from a Tolstoy twenty years later, War and Peace might have been a very different book.

I have already found at least a PDF of your short story. I used to have a collection of short stories, but I have lost books, and it is not on the shelf. I will be seeking a hard copy soon. I would be happy to hear your opinion of my opinion of his big book, as well as a summary of the short story you recommend.

(It is your thread. You are permitted to highjack it for a good reason!) (I will still hope to have a few words about anger.)

Well as strange as it is I do not read very much fiction.  I could never finish should a work as War & Peace.   I do not remember how I came across What men live by.  It is the most spiritual short story ever written.  It is about a fallen angel who reconciles with God by living with humans for a short time,  a masterpiece that is good for anyone who has some faith in God.

"And the pasch of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And he found in the temple them that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting. And when he had made, as it were, a scourge of little cords, he drove them all out of the temple, the sheep also and the oxen, and the money of the changers he poured out, and the tables he overthrew. And to them that sold doves he said: Take these things hence, and make not the house of my Father a house of traffic."

Note first that Jesus observes the profanation of the Temple. In St. Matthew's Gospel we hear Him regretting that the house of prayer is changed into a "den of thieves", or illicit profit making. In this passage we see that He is not offended personally, but on behalf of His Father, whose Temple is being profaned. Secondly, we can see that He is not abusing but using His anger reasonably, in a calm and collected manner, as He silently makes a scourge of little cords, with which to drive these infidels away. This would be an example given to us of how righteous anger may be reasonably used. 

 2) I will confess that most of the anger in my life has been unreasonable, wasted on perceived violations against my own person. Without humility (an accurate estimation of our true condition before God), pride makes us over-sensitive to those who don't appreciate how wonderful we think we are.

3) I can't remember the more distant past, but I think it is always a good exercise to analyze one's angry moments. Am I angry because of disrespect towards me, who thinks I am deserving of better treatment, or of a real injustice that hurts others or myself? Ordinarily these days, I can easily spot what made me angry, whether it was mere pride, or sound reason. 

4) It would be insane to angrily question God if you believe in God. But none of us are immune to occasional insanity.

It is interesting to me that a synonym for angry is mad and a synonym for mad is insane. Not all anger is unrighteous, but all madness is unrighteous, and crazy. Even though it is easily abused, it needs to be recognized that anger is a necessary component to human perfection. Those who would advance in virtue would wish to gain the ability to correctly hate sin, to have a courageous spirit of anger against violations of charitable behaviour towards God, our neighbour, and all of creation.

I'm angry and embarrassed to be an American today. What a disgrace we have become. I'm only a carpenter but I'm smart enough to pull our civilians out before pulling our military out. Not to mention the 10k locals we needed to evac. With the Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight in charge it will only get worse.

I like to think that those who die go to a better place with better conditions than what most of us have here.  Most of the news on the TV these days is just a lot of bad news that I am really not interested in hearing about.
