He was alluding to a personal experience he shared earlier in his talk as a transitional device for making his subsequent point, probably similar to the point you are making here, that any service is important, no matter where the assignment comes from, or even if there has been no assignment at all. The personal experience he shared gave an interesting under-the-surface glimpse into what it’s like to be a General Authority, which I found quite illuminating. In the latter’s case, you may have been perceiving his candor, which is a quality I appreciate and not the same thing as harshness. 3

I don’t get why President Oaks seems to be a lightning rod for the criticism of some folks, particularly those who hold the love-trumps-everything-else attitude. Divine law and obedience to it are important too, and sometimes I think we need more reminders of that. Maybe that’s President Oaks’s unique contribution to our discourse. Somebody has to do it. I’ll add a footnote here and say that Dallin Oaks has been a favorite of mine stemming from when he was my university president while I was at BYU in the 1970s.
