I think you are putting limits on people, putting them into categories that will impede your understanding.

Honestly, I'm confused that you think I put "limits" on people. I came on here in favor women recieving the priesthood, that's the opposite of limiting someone. I think it was yesterday or the day before you said on another thread,  you were more comfortable representing yourself through following Christ instead of what Bednar said, he said we should represent christ in all things. If you remember,  I said to you, do what you have to do calm, I even said maybe think of Heavenly mother instead, that's not putting limitations on anyone, that's thinking outside the box. Also, you'll be hard pressed to find were I've ever stated that the church is made up of "facts" that some people see as limiting them. Just the opposite, I see the church as very freeing because of continuing revelation. Personally, I think I leave a lot of wiggle room in the way I approach the gospel.

I'm asking you honestly because I value your opinion,  how do I limit people?

I don’t think you understand my position as to what bothered me as that is definitely not how I would phrase it, but I really have to sleep.

By all means, please sleep, I didn't no I was keeping you up. I apologize ma'am. I wasn't expecting you to answer right now, take your time and if you want to explain it to me later that's great, I guess I'm not seeing what your talking about. But that's ok.

Mormonism is structured in such a way, it answers alot of questions about life here on earth and what happens to us after we die. Most people want organization in their lives but dont know where to even begin. Mormonism not only gives you the starting point, it gives you a map with a path clearly marked, all you have to do is stay on the path. Obviously, most mormons, not all, believe the church is the only true church, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about what it offers while here on earth.

All right, what I'm about to say will probably upset a few people, but hey, prove me wrong I guess 😁. Like alot of religions that demand alot from its followers, Mormonism allows you to turn off part of your brain. It is like a substitute for the part of your brain that ask life's most difficult questions. Where did I come from, why am I here, where am I going. On top of that, the structure I'm talking about like the word of wisdom, dress code, views like no pre marital sex, no profanity and so on can actually keep you younger for longer.

Also, it allows you to be part of a big family of people who think alike for the most part. That's very comforting to mostly all humans because we're pack animals. Feeling alone is very stressful on an animal that belongs in a large pack, Mormonism can bring you comfort and lots of friends.

Alot of mormons who dont believe in the religious part of the church anymore, stay in because its sense of community, the comfort it can bring to your soul, but most importantly its structure I think. Life is hard man, and it's not long enough (around 75 years) to figure out most of the questions you seek to have answered.

Mormonism isn't the only institution that can do this, but it is at the top of the list.

PS   I wanted to add, mormon missionaries are taught to look for people who might find themselves in a stressful part of their life, probably more so than looking for people who would benefit from the gospel message. Its easier to get someone to accept a message when they're looking for answers or help.

To be fair, Catholicism did kind of the same thing way back when, it changed a lot over time.  Also, like Protestants outside of the USA they have more influence in public life, esp. in places like Europe.

Actually, no not at all.  Know much about transubstantiation?  It's a teaching that the eucharist is the literal body and blood of Christ.   If you ever go in a catholic church and see candles lit nearby the tabernacle, it means the sacrament inside is blessed, it's Christs literal presence.  That of course varies from Protestant to Protestant.  Point is, they accept it, tow the party line on things like that, abortion, etc.  There are super conservative branches of the Catholic church here that do argue with those of different political stripes.  They're also a lot more vocal over whom their flock votes for.  Here's the thing, like you guys those who come from those families have something most don't anymore in this country, a stable family and community.  I knew a few people whos parents converted to the LDS faith, their kids got to grow up in stable, relatively drug free communities with people who were very much like them.  Speaking of unpopular opinions, here's another.  The more homogenous an area is, the fewer problems it tends to have.  Look at Japan and Taiwan, far, far less crime than the USA and waaaay better families.  Also, their social welfare is far better than ours.  Thing is, it's the culture that makes it work.  They have other problems like mental illness and suicide but still, that's the trade off.  They also support their own a lot more.  You can go to Hawaii/California and see it.  Your average Japanese will spend more at a Japanese owned shop vs. going to walmart, just to have their own  things.  People here don't do that.

You're right about what you said possibly upsetting people, the Jordan Peterson thread I made probably upset a few people.  Moment you call out any group they get very, very defensive.  How dare you insult my political beliefs, i believe in xyz.  Few ever stop to think and take a good look in the mirror.

Your community however, that I envy most.  I don't blame them for being shy to outsiders, to this day Latter Day Saints are not liked by many esp. those of other christian denominations.  Kind of ironic, I think you guys learned by watching them.  I can say from experience, most other Protestant denominations have done a great job of destroying what community they had left.  You can go to most of them, poor and needing help, they will show you the door.  I've had to defend the LDS church from more privileged caucasian relatives, I reminded them it was DI and a few well meaning members who tried to help, the rest did nothing.  These are the same class of people who complain about the growing Muslim population, how they help their own with housing yet when you ask what they do about their own Christian poor the answer is usually the same, not my problem.  Think it was during Hurricane Harvey, the Mosques were among the first to open their doors.  Joel Olsteen had to be shamed via social media to open his doors.  IT does help that mom went to BYUH, her classmates still call her decades later and I have a few LDS cousins.  They have far, far fewer problems than the other caucasian relatives I have.  While their kids give the rest of them no end of entitlement fueled headache, the LDS relatives I know of contribute, serve missions and live far more productive lives.  Also, your church is far more accepting of people of color, they've even helped get legislation passed that protected LGBT people.  I find it ironic, i've seen far more Asians, Hispanics and other POC comfortable in a majorly WASP ward than your average church in the suburbs.

Question for you, as a non baptised member, how well do you think i'd be treated?  I believe your refering to Jack Mormons.  Covid was something, I had to leave a lot of things behind, cut ties with a few groups I belonged to.  I've always been careful, covid has made me far, far more leary over the people I associate with.  I had mixed success, it was the leadership I got along with great.  To be fair, i've seen it with Catholics.  Outside the USA?  Lol different story.  What i've seen?  The Catholic Church blows everyone out of the water.  Also, they're far more willing to work with people.  In Germany they work with the Lutherans a lot more than here, sadly the religious landscape here is all about backstabbing and politics, from what i've seen.

Not sure why having answers in one area that have to be taken on faith to a significant degree leads you to think that makes it easier to turn off your brain than having no answers.  They are answers that allow us to move forward rather than spinning our wheels in worry or despair....I find there are few things that waste one’s brain more than worrying about what if’s.

Also one of the major intents of our faith is to communicate with God and that isn’t something one can do by turning off one’s brain.

And IMO the Gospel gives us a chance to work our brains in some of the most difficult to answer questions in life...how do we help others in the best way?  There is nothing more complicated than a human being who is a mess of unknown influences environmental and internal, full of contradictory feelings and thoughts.  We rarely know ourselves that well to understand what we really need, trying to figure out others’ needs and then how we can help them fill those needs without sabotaging ourselves...massive riddle there IMO.  So to truly help them, not just support them with minimal thought or effort by giving our excess wealth to the Church or a charity that then does all the thinking and doing for you or approaching charity as one size fits all (streamlining one’s efforts by keeping on hand all the fixings for bringing a wonderful dinner of chicken in peanut sauce with strawberry cheesecake for dessert so one can always say yes when asked to help out is smart, but how nice is it really for the family with the kid with the severe peanut allergy or the parent that breaks out after eating strawberries?***), but actually taking the time to get to know people in ways that it counts, so that you both feel connected and safe if possible to share each other’s path....that takes time, thought, commitment, bravery, creativity...

Also it takes brainwork to take risks by attempting to engage with others you might not feel so safe with, but who still need your help in some way and then really work at discovering what can help without adding unnecessary burdens including feeling like someone’s project or charity case.

Trying to live the Gospel well takes using your brain more, not less in the meaningful, important parts of life, IMO.

The structure and teachings of the Gospel does allow us to save energy and resources by not wasting ourselves through constantly asking ourselves the same questions over moral and other behaviours.  Also avoids losing hours in debate with oneself “is it worth it really?”  Just as it becomes easier to follow an exercise plan if you approach it as a given part of your day rather than asking yourself “should I exercise today or not” and then spending several minutes wondering where you can fit it in and if it is more important to get something else done, etc., so it is easier if we decide on moral and other important standards in our life instead of constantly questioning ourselves “today should I take advantage of my boss and fellowworkers’ trust and see what I can get away with without being caught or should I play it decent by doing my job and respecting those I work with and for?”  Or in our family relationships, do we commit to caring for each other forever or as long as it isn’t too much work (one of my relatives was told their spouse wanted a divorce because he didn’t think he should have to work at loving someone).

I don’t see the Church as providing ways to go through life with part of one’s brain turned off.  Rather it allows us to use our brains in deeply meaningful ways interacting with others because we have already confronted and made decisions on the more mundane, busywork type of stuff, so we don’t have to waste much mental or emotional energy on it.

***It makes a huge difference to me when my ministers take a few minutes in telling me they intend to bring something over (so I don’t have to feel burden by the question “do you need anything”) and if there is anything I can’t have or something I prefer, so instead of the chocolate or peanut butter cookies that I get to smile at the kindness and then sigh as I have to toss them in the garbage I get fruit and cheese, maybe some unusual or homemade bread I get to enjoy as well as thinking nice thoughts about the person bringing them.  Anyone giving money, food, or anything to another person needs to stop and ask themselves ‘can I be sure what I am doing is helpful and not a waste or burden’ and if not, take some effort when possible to be sure or at least more sure.  Taking a loaf of freshly homemade bread to someone on a gluten-free diet is not being that kind.

In a way I can see where Mike is coming from, like I said to him turning off part of your brain isn't as uncommon as you might think.  I'll probably get glares for this, o well.  Natural family planning, a lot of Catholics don't do it yet it's expected.  Same thing with Abortion, socialism etc.  Depending on the parish you go to, that's a big deal.  A friend of mine married into Catholic family, he's a Lutheran and a freemason, needless to say he's not liked by more than a few of them.  It's dumb, across the pond people get along, the spirit of ecumenicalism is alive and well, not so much here.   Thing is, when your family and possibly your livelihood is tied up in a community of faith, you tow the party line.  I know Utah gets a bad rap for LDS favoritism, it's worse out east.  Most folks out here have no idea the factionalism that plays out among the various denominations.  It's all power.  Thing is, like Mike, said, you guys have the resources, community and homogenous culture they no longer do.  Also, you care for outsiders.

You would be treated great! If you decide to go to church you'll be welcomed with open arms. But keep in mind, just like any other organization, you'll find people you can tolerate better than others. The way I approach the gospel differently than most, in my opinion, is I think you can come to the gospel from all angles. The church is set up for just that. You'll here a lot of people that aren't mormon say, man your church is expensive, a full 10%? ,really!! But, there are plenty of people, mormon and non mormon that go to church all the time to experience the atmosphere and the togetherness, that's what Mormonism does the best in my opinion, it even says it on the sign outside, (visitors welcome). But you dont have to pay tithing to go to church is my point. You can experience "Mormonism" for free, no one cares. Plenty of people sit in the pews and pay no tithing. I know families who have one member parent and one non member parent, and both parents go to church just so their children can experience the youth program. You dont need a testimony to go to church.

There's plenty of science that backs up my opinion. Through my own desperation to live and stay on this earth with my beautiful family, I've learned, or you could even say forced myself to be happy. Happiness is truly a state of mind. Exercising your brain is no different than exercising your body. If you dont exercise your body, there's a chance you'll get fat and experience a plethora of health problems. Your brain is no different, left uncheck, your brain can go into survival mode and your brains number one goal is to survive, that means sometimes it will go to the dark side and get stuck, always worrying and thinking the worst. If you dont challenge your brain (exercise it), for some, the darkness will over take you, you'll start believing it cant be fixed.

Feel free to do so but the word of God is what He intended to be and revealed to the prophet or Apostle that penned that scripture. That is why the Savior explained His parables and allegories. That is why Nephi explained what the dream of the tree of life meant, for example. No room for multiple interpretations.

I would be careful about imposing limits on God.  Many scriptures are vague enough to allow for multiple meanings, depending on the needs of the Lord and His people. Imposing rigid, one meaning, strictures on anything the Lord reveals shuts us off from new truths the Lord wants to reveal. The key is simple—rely on the Lord to reveal what He meant by that verse for me, personally.

You go to church, you benefit, pay your share.  I hate that about people here, they want something for nothing.  In a few years when I have more free time I'd have no qualms volunteering at DI, if we had one.

I had a BOM, lost it in the move.  You guys use the KJV?  Last few bibles I picked up were Catholic.

I picked this up over the holidays, not sure how you approach the bible, you might like it, you might not.  Most of the Christian things I consume are Catholic, after that anymore it is LDS.  You guys have so much great material out there.  It's free, you don't limit it to your own faithful and you don't play the political games other denominations do.  It also helps you work with Catholic Charities a lot.

You're also an outdoorsman right?  that's also a help.  I got back into it years ago, I find those who just live in the city or approach the wilderness like an urban/suburban yuppie tend to be miserable.

My husband and I have wondered about this a lot.

He is a huge introvert.  He will often tell me that he "doesn't like people" because being around people too much drains him.  Yet he spent 7 hours on Saturday helping a sick man do not pleasant personal things so that the man's wife could have a break.  It is not uncommon for him to be there for several hours helping the man. With all this he is very allergic to something in their house so he strips all his clothes off (which I then toss in the laundry) and takes a shower because an itchy rash breaks out all over his skin.

He is 6'6".  His boss once told him that he need to smile more while he was walking through the hallway.  He was scaring people - his resting face looks "grumpy" and with his size... Yet he has a number of coworkers who have left the company and call him occasionally to keep him updated in theirs lives because he means so much to them.

So should he try to be more extroverted and look more happy?

Should he? Maybe not. Seems like he already has a lot going for him.

But it might be a worthwhile addition  — as an “icing-the-cake” sort of thing.

Yes, the outdoors keeps me happy happy. My new fishing trick I learned off you tube is we will take a 10 foot step ladders to the beach and walk them out to the outside sandbar, usually 100 feet off the beach and set it up, go to the top and stand on it. It makes it easier to site fish. Plus, it's fun as hell to do something and people think your totally out of your mind.

You can get a kjv for free online at the churches website. You can also chat with the missionaries online, find the ward near you. If you don't want to go by yourself, the missionaries will go with. Hopefully some time this year things will get back to normal and attending church might get back to normal.

Debating getting one of those float tubes, that or more backpacking gear.  This year is kinda shot, my nursing program started late so my free time is kinda gone.

I'm waiting for things to quiet down before I do anything of that nature.  Playing it safe.  Thats something else I'll give the LDS church, i'm sure they do more as far as covid guidelines go, not everyone does.  I have at risk family with me, I wish people would have more charity towards the more vulnerable people out there.

Backpacking is always a good way to go. I just bought an old kelty tioga external frame backpack off of Ebay to try. My internal frame makes me sweat really bad. I'm going old school. If your a backpacker, checkout Mora knives, one of the best knives you can get and their light and inexpensive. Also, Opinel knives, they're old school knives but sharp as a razor.

That is old school.  I buy most of my gear used, no sense in blowing a ton of money.  I'm a fan of military surplus, looking to get some cheap BDU's when I have time again to go hunting with friends.  Perfect time to get into bow hunting considering the price of ammo and me not knowing how to reload.  Ever see those neat panchos that double as tents?  The polish ones are really neat.  The come with poles you can have stashed away, when you're ready you're literally wearing your tent.

BTW, this is another reason why LDS wards look really appealing, they do tend to have more outdoors/health oriented people.  It's just not a thing with a lot of people anymore.  Bad experience I had when I belonged to a few groups and had social media, minute they saw any pics of me in the outdoors I'd get these glares of disapproval and jealousy.  It seems like a lot of orgs/churches here expect the single people to sacrifice their time but parents get a pass.  And people wonder why millenials are just ghosting society...

I think you might be able to do the Gospel Library App. You will need to set up an account.  I am assuming you don't have to be a member, but do know if you can sign up for an account you won't have access to everything a member does like lists of members phone numbers.  If they allow you without your membership number you should be able to access all the scriptures, lesson books etc and even mark and note them.

My husband and I are laughing and trying to figure out how to repay you for making my heart so happy! He said we should write Atlantic Mike at Virginia Beach that we'll be visiting this June, I said or the Great Salt Lake beach, lol!

You made my day Mike!!

BTW, I had to remind my husband what my name means. It was at the start of my faith issues. Somehow I ran upon the meaning, maybe I might have entered my feelings in the computer and this name came up. It means:

tacenda pl (plural only) things that are not to be spoken about or made public. things that are best left unsaid.

Please dont feel like you have to pay me back. I'm at the ocean almost daily, not that big of a deal. Just tryin to make someone smile.
