Duncan Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 I think most? people would say that Jesus was nailed to the cross at around 9am or at least around then and was on the cross from say 9am to 3pm and then died at that time, but Matthew 27:46 says, "and about the Ninth Hour" he cried why has God forsaken him? How do they figure 9 hours? 9am to 3pm isn't 9 hours? Or is it?

Some folk might misunderstand the biblical reference to be speaking of the "ninth hour" since Christ was raised up on the Cross, as opposed to the ninth hour of the day according to Hebrew reckoning, which would be about 3 PM. The ninth hour as used by the Evangelists refers to the time of day, not the length of time on the Cross. Or was the three hour eclipse, the hours hours he hung “after his death”? In this case I think 6 hours total, maybe? 1

The Bible says that Jesus was placed on the cross at 9 a.m. and darkness covered the land from noon until Jesus’ death at 3 p.m. (Mark 15:25, 33-38). 1
