JamesBYoung Posted June 19, 2020 Posted June 19, 2020 Religious freedom does not embrace the civil right to spread disease. 1

However, going to church does not need to be banned because there are ways to practice social distancing during church services.

Here Here here Here As LDS we have been holding religious service at home. We were just allowed to go back to church two weeks ago. But religious gatherings for funerals, baptisms, last rites, etc. have been banned in nearly all 50 states in one form or another. 1

If only that worked better than it does! I have seen outbreaks of over 100 employees infected in call centers where desks are over 10 feet apart and strict social distancing and hygiene measures are enforced. Edited June 19, 2020 by pogi 3

Perhaps we should blame an apostle. Stubborn projectionism, denying the existence in themselves at the same time attributing it to others.

Who's blaming an apostle for social distancing not working as well as we would hope? 1

I meant, no one is stopping me or even trying to stop me from worshiping and even performing sacred priesthood ordinances. Not even close. Since WE require the temple to perform certain ordinances, those things are not available. But I don’t fear the government any more now than I did 2 years ago. It will always have potential to shut us down but I just don’t feel any religious persecution- 4

How about we blames ourselves as a people who should know better, to be humble and kind full of Mormon mindfulness. 1

A full transcript of Elder Bednar's remarks of June 17, 2020, can be found at https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/bednar-byu-religious-freedom-review-speech His sermon was part of the annual BYU Law School Review of Religious Freedom. The Review this year was a digital only conference, and Elder Bednar delivered his remarks from his SLC office. In those remarks, Elder Bednar seemed to ignore the very careful approach of the First Presidency to prevent the spread of the Wuhan Virus among Latter-day Saints. He suggested instead that such policies were imposed on the LDS Church by outside, governmental authority. However, in doing so, he focused only on American government (even though most members live outside the USA, and are not subject to U.S. law). He cited the Declaration of Independence, which has no standing in U.S. law. He did also discuss the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and what that means. However, in all of his discussion, he took the fallacious them-and-us position as government versus the people, or government versus religion as his primary complaint -- apparently forgetting that the USA is a democratic country in which people vote that govt into office, so that the govt is actually the people (or, as Lincoln said, a govt of the people, by the people, and for the people), and that we always get exactly the govt we deserve. We can complain about it all we want, but in the end "We have met the enemy, and they is us." 3
Scott Lloyd Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 Why are there two ongoing threads on the same topic? 1

You may request this be deleted if that suits you. I understand how it happened. I just wonder why it has continued (or been permitted to continue). Two threads on the same topic gets confusing. Or redundant, with the same points being raised and the same questions being asked in separate threads. Perhaps this one can be merged with the other one. That sort of thing has been done before. Calm Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 (edited) Mods are the only ones who can merge or lock threads, if it wasn't reported, no reason to expect it to be locked imo. FYI, the vast majority of merged threads in the past happened with ones I reported as a duplicate. Others may have reported them as well, I just know at least one report had been made prior to merging. Edited June 20, 2020 by Calm
